Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter who is best known for her self-portraits. Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. She gave her birth date as July 7, 1910, but her birth certificate shows July 6, 1907. Kahlo had supposedly wanted the year of her birth to match the year of the beginning of the Mexican Revolution so that her life would begin with the birth of modern Mexico. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as a symbol of national tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience. Kahlo had a struggling marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many caused by a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people, and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."

Frida KahloFrida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican

painter who is best known for her self-portraits.

Assignment:

• You will look through the Frida Kahlo paintings that I have provided on this PowerPoint. You will then choose ONE of the paintings and…

1) Write a paragraph (5-8 sentences) where you first identify the major emotion that Frida Kahlo is feeling in the painting (Sad is a boring adjective. Come up with vivid adjectives). Then explain how the objects (ex.- tree, parrot, arrow, etc.) in the painting enhance the meaning of the painting itself (What does each object symbolize? These objects did not end up in the painting by accident. They are meant to be there).

2) Take a moment to think about one emotion that would define YOU (Ex.- adventurous, energetic, shy, curious, etc.). Once you have identified your emotion you need to create a self-portrait that illustrates that aspect of your identity. You must include your face and one object that helps to enhance your illustration’s meaning. Be Creative!!!

3) On the back of your self-portrait you need to write the emotion that your self-portrait is demonstrating and you need to explain in 2-3 sentences how the included object enhances the meaning.
