Em setembro de 2015 a Assembleia Geral dasNações Unidas aprovou os Objetivos deDesenvolvimento Sustentável, dando um novoímpeto ao combate pelo fim da pobreza e pelapreservação do planeta. Isto ocorre quase 60 anos após o início das independências e num contexto de retoma do crescimento emmuitos países africanos. Após cerca de trêsdécadas de estagnação e empobrecimento, a partir do início do século e em resultado daprocura crescente de matérias-primas e energia, as exportações aumentaram e o interesse de investidores e de algunsnovos atores, com particular relevo à China,mudaram o cenário macroeconómico e político em vastas áreas do continenteafricano. As relações com a Europa, até agoramodeladas a partir de sucessivos acordos no âmbito dos países de África, Caraíbas e Pacífico, estão a ser reequacionadas, namedida em que as circunstâncias dodesenvolvimento se alteraram, em quesurgiram novos atores e em que assistimos a uma consolidação da União Africana. A Fundação Portugal-África, no seu 20º aniversário, promove esta ConferênciaInternacional para debater os principaisdesafios globais e de desenvolvimento queÁfrica enfrenta, o papel dos atores externos e as perspetivas de mudança nas relaçõescom a Europa e Portugal. No Ano Europeupara o Desenvolvimento, esta conferência é um contributo independente para o debatesobre caminhos futuros para África.

In September 2015 the UN GeneralAssembly approved the SustainableDevelopment Goals, fostering a transformative agenda to end poverty andto preserve the planet. This takes place almost 60 years after the surge ofindependences and in a context where mostAfrican countries returned to growth. Afterthree decades of stagnation andimpoverishment, since the beginning of thecentury and as a result of a rise on thedemand of commodities and energy, Africanexports increased and the interest ofinvestors and new players, namely China,helped to change the macroeconomic andpolitical scenario in vast areas of thecontinent. Relations with Europe, so farmodeled through a range of Agreements withAfrica, Caribbean and Pacific countries, arebeing reshaped taking into account newdevelopment circumstances, the increasedengagement of new players and also theconsolidation of the African Union project. The Portugal-Africa Foundation, on theoccasion of her 20th anniversary promotesthis International Conference, to debatemajor global and development challenges in African countries, the role of externalplayers and the perspectives for change in the relationship with Europe and Portugal.In the European Year for Development thisConference intends to be a contribution forthe debate on the future of Africa.
