Surrey seeks arena partner

By Kevin DiakiwTh e city is seeking a partner to help

build a 10,000-seat complex on the Clo-verdale Fairgrounds, a building suitable for hosting future indoor rodeos and pos-sibly hockey games.

According to an expression of interest put out by the city, the building will be a “state-of-the-art” facility that can be used for sport, exhibitions, trade shows, con-ventions, cultural programs, concerts and similar events.

Th e $50- to $80-million facility will be a public-private partnership, with the city and a yet-to-be chosen partner splitting the costs.

Th e seating ca-pacity puts the scale at about double the Langley Events Cen-tre and larger than any sporting facility outside of B.C. Place and Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

About a dozen proponents went to city hall recently and discussed possible options for the are-na, which would be located on the north side of the Clover-dale Fairgrounds, near 176 Street and 64 Avenue.

Bill Reid, execu-tive director for the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce, said the complex is just what the community needs.

“Th e city is putting the land in the package to make it work,” Reid said.

One of the caveats is that the facility must provide an indoor venue for the an-nual May long weekend rodeo.

Mayor Dianne Watts said it’s time something was done with aging infra-structure at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.

“Th e buildings are getting very, very old,” Watts said. “We’ve had trade shows leave because of the condition of the buildings. So it’s time we looked at new options.”

She isn’t aware of any discussions with sports teams that might want to use the facility.

Th e city had been in discussions with the Whitecaps FC, which wanted a prac-tice venue on the other side of the prop-erty, closer to Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino.

Watts said she’s not been made aware of how those discussions are going.

It’s expected the existing amphithe-atre, youth skate park and Stetson Bowl would be kept as part of any successful pro-posal.

Reid said that he’s heard the Stetson Bowl fi eld would be replaced with astroturf, al-lowing it to be used for soccer, football, baseball and grass hockey by both the city and the school district.

Watts said she expects to see spe-cifi c proposals by March 17.

“Th en we’ll move forward on

that basis, depending on what we have,” Watts said.

Th e early stage hasn’t done anything to quell Cloverdale’s enthusiasm for the project.

“I’m walking up and down the street right now telling everybody, ‘It’s coming, it’s coming’,” Reid said.

RURAL BOOSTB.C. Liberal delegates

voted overwhelmingly last weekend to change their voting system, giv-ing rural regions equal say with urban popula-tions in selecting their next party leader and premier.

With all the leader-ship candidates in fa-vour of the weighted voting system, del-egates in Vancouver and at eight regional forums Feb. 12 easily reached the two-thirds majority required to make the change.

Th e fi nal count was 1,319 party delegates in favour of the change and only 23 opposed.

Th e new system was recommended by the B.C. liberal executive last fall, aft er Premier Gordon Campbell an-nounced he is stepping down.

It will assign 100 points to each of the 85 constituency asso-ciations, to be divided proportionally when party members pick a new leader Feb. 26.

Th e weighted vote ensures a constituency with only 100 mem-bers has the same clout in leadership choice as one with 1,000 mem-bers.

Shuswap MLA George Abbott has been the most vocal of the candidates supporting the weighted system.

News in brief

She’ll be missed

JENNIFER LANG PHOTOCharlotte Hryhoryk holds a certifi cate of appreciation for her 14 years working for the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, through the Surrey Association for Community Living’s employment program. Also pictured: Cloverdale Chamber executive director Bill Reid, Jennie Janzen from SACL and BIA executive director Paul Orazietti, who said of Hryhoryk: ‘She’s just been a real gem.’

Robbery suspects still sought aft er

By Jennifer LangSurrey RCMP are still seeking the

public’s help in solving a particularly brazen crime that took place at a local pharmacy in downtown Cloverdale in early December.

At 12:51 p.m. on Dec. 6, two sus-pects confronted two employees at the pharmacy in the 5600 block of 177B Street, demanding “Oxycontins”.

Both employees were viciously as-saulted and threatened with a knife during the robbery, before being forced to open the safe. Aft er grab-bing the contents of the safe, the sus-pects fl ed out the front door, across the neighbouring school yard and hopped into a waiting vehicle.

One staff member was locked out-side while the crime took place.

One suspect – the one who entered the store fi rst – is described as of me-dium build, with bushy eyebrows, square jawline and a high hairline.

Suspect two has a slimmer build, is taller than the fi rst suspect, and had two light gray/ white horizontal strips on each arm of his sweatshirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP robbery section at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if you with to remain anonymous.

RISKY BUSINESS?Th e Surrey RCMP’s latest Business

Link newsletter for Cloverdale and Port Kells businesses off ers tips on reducing the risk of being targeted by property crime and theft – and how to deal with a robbery if it happens.

Th e reality is all businesses are a po-tential target for thieves wanting cash, drugs or goods, says the newsletter, written by crime prevention pro-grams coordinator Carrie Chattell.

Suggestions for reducing the risk include adhering to sound business practices, ensuring the premises have good visibility, proper lighting and are equipped with an alarm system.

Employee training is also recom-mended; it’s important for businesses to provide employees with informa-tion on what to do to minimize the impact of a robbery.

Police recommend remaining calm, not making sudden moves, comply-ing with demands and not arguing with robbers. Never assume the rob-ber isn’t armed. Try to pay close at-tention to what the robber looks like (but don’t stare). Only activate a panic alarm when it’s safe to do so, and don’t be a hero.

Aft er the robber leaves, lock the door, try to observe the direction of travel of the suspect and/or getaway vehicle, and dial 9-1-1.

Free height strips are available to all businesses to help owners and their employees identify suspects of crime.

When the big one comes – and it’s coming – will you and your family be prepared?According to Earthquakes

Canada, in the last month, between Dec. 29 and Jan. 28, southwest British Columbia had 79 earthquakes. Six of those oc-curred within regions measured from Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

OK, so you didn’t feel any of them. Most of those little trem-ours were less than a magnitude of 3.0. But while they may be out of sight and out of mind, the constant jiggling of B.C.’s natu-ral ground forces is good reason to get ready for when the shiver becomes a serious grinder.

British Columbia clearly leads the way in having the most and the biggest earthquakes in the nation.

According to Natural Re-sources Canada, about 5,000 earthquakes are recorded in Canada each year and of the top 10 earthquakes nationally, six have happened in this prov-

ince. The mother of them all was a

magnitude 9.0 quake on Jan. 26, 1700 in the Cascadia subduc-tion zone.

According to research, 13 great earthquakes have oc-curred in the region in the last

6,000 years, about one in every 400 or so years. Statistically, we are over 300 years into the po-tential for the next great quake. In the last 130 years, we have had four magnitude 7+ earth-quakes between southwestern B.C. and northern Washington.

To be self-sufficient andready to go it alone for at least72 hours after the earthquakehits means having a plan foreveryone in the family, a grab-ready emergency kit at home, atwork and in the car, a back-upplan and an out-of-town (or outof province) contact numberof a relative or friend who ev-eryone can relay messages to inthe event communications aredown.

Most people, though, are farfrom earthquake ready – in aprovince where a major earth-quake could strike 50 yearsfrom now. Or tomorrow.

Lord Strathcona’s horse rides againWhen Bob Mackay

retired he traded draft -ing legal briefs for craft -ing books. Soldier of the Horse, Mackay’s fi rst fi c-tion novel, arrived on his desk last week.

Th e tale of passion, war, camaraderie, brav-ery and history takes readers from love and legal wranglings in Manitoba to a young soldier’s Great War sur-vival in France with the famous WW1 Canadian cavalry regiment, Lord Strathcona’s Horse.

Based on the life of his dad, Tom Mackay, Bob not only dedicated years to researching the era, the cavalry and the art of writing, but made a pilgrimage with his wife, Pat, to France in 2008 for the 90th anni-versary of the Battle of Moreuil Wood, where the Straths and their horses launched one of history’s last great cav-alry charges on March 30, 1918.

Weaving emotions generated by wind, rain

and memories of scars (physical and emotion-al) left with his father and those who survived, Mackay ably translates his impressions into a period tale which re-turns the reader to a by-gone era.

No GPS, digital strat-egy, or satellite tracking, but simply the shock and awe of men, horses and brutal, unforgiving steel facing enemies and natural elements in the name of freedom, king and country.

Mackay, a former rancher, teacher, sub-mariner and lawyer, has plenty of material for his writing career.

As president of the Vancouver branch of the Canadian Authors’ Association and a long time member of the Rain Writer’s group in Langley, his advice to new writers is: “Just write. Every day. I must have written more than 350,000 words which have been condensed into 86,000 words for the novel.”

Beginning with a very rough draft , regular writing kept the fl ow going. “Th e fun job was revising,” recalls Mac-kay, who admits seeing the fi rst draft was excit-ing as was fi nally hold-ing the fi nished work published by Touch Wood Editions, a pub-lishing house focusing on stories about Cana-da’s West.

Confessing that he may dust off a long bur-ied manuscript involv-ing a lawyer tangling with terrorists, Mackay is content to leave his years of law behind him.

Currently on his agenda are draft s of a Korean War and submarine sto-ries.

A book launch and signing for Soldier of the Horse will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 (Clo-verdale) on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

Th e public is welcome to stop in and chat with Cloverdale’s newest au-thor and retired lawyer Robert Mackay. – Columnist Ursula Maxwell-

Th e top 24 rodeo contestants based on last year’s fi nal world standings are invited to the Cloverdale rodeo.

Th is year’s rodeo and country fair takes place May 20 to 23 at the Clover-

dale Fairgrounds, and off ers one of the richest payouts in the country with $360,000 in prize money.

“We are extremely pleased to mark the 65th annual ro-deo with a very strong talent pool consisting of the world and Canadian champions,” Cloverdale Rodeo Chair Penny Smythe said.

“Th ere is no better way to mark this milestone than giving West Coast rodeo fans

a fi rst rate show.”Two talent pools of competitors

compete in four events: bareback, sad-dle bronc, bull riding and ladies barrel racing, with money awarded in each round.

Got a dream? What are you waiting for?

By Jennifer LangIf you’ve ever set an idea aside only to wonder,

‘What if?’ then you might take new inspiration from Paula Kolins.

Th e Cloverdale author says her new children’s book, Turtle Has 3 Legs, was originally a story she wrote for her son to share with his kindergarten class at Martha Currie Elementary during show and tell.

He’s 18 now, she says with a laugh, holding a copy of her new book – her fi rst.

“It’s always been in the back of my mind,” she says, explaining friends at the time encouraged her to have it published but she set the notion aside.

Kolins says the rise in bullying awareness and anti-bullying initia-tives like pink shirt day convinced her it was time to pick up her manuscript again.

So she took a local course on how to get published. Her instructor owned a publishing com-pany, so aft er the course wrapped up, she submitted a manuscript for a children’s book for young readers.

“I just thought, you know what? People always say they’re going to do things and they never do, and I just really thought to myself if I don’t do this, I probably never will,” she says. “So, I just went for it.”

To her delight, the story was accepted.Just last week, Turtle Has 3 Legs became available

for pre-sale on Amazon.ca.“I cried when I saw it,” says Kolins, a familiar face

to patients of the Apple Medical Centre, where she works as the offi ce manager.

“It’s one of those things, if you don’t try it,” she says, “it will never be.”

She says working with an illustrator on the book’s pictures took the longer than she thought.

She wanted the images to be realistic but kid-friendly – not cartoonish. “So we kind of went back and forth with that.”

She may have written the story many years ago, but the creative memory remains fresh.

When her sons were younger, she was “Th at mom!” – the parent who was always volunteering and getting involved at her kids’ school. (She blames it on separation anxiety – hers).

Turtle Has 3 Legs is a story about a “sweet little turtle” who’s diff er-ent because he only has three legs and fi nds acceptance from a bossy beaver, a preening swan and other creatures with classroom alter egos.

Kolins was inspired by one of his classmates, a child with Downs Syndrome.

He wasn’t bullied or teased, but she couldn’t bear to think that might change as he got older.

“He was just a sweetheart,” she says. “Th at just got me thinking.”

She hopes the book will remind parents to en-courage their children to make friends with other children with disabilities or diff erences.

“Th at is really the fi rst step, accepting people, and teaching your kids to accept people.”

She aimed the story at young readers, she says, because “I think you have to start early. When your kids are in Grade 6 or 7 and being targeted, it’s not too late, but it’s almost as if you’ve missed a golden opportunity when they were little.”

Now, it’s her job to market her book. She’s going to try to get it into book stores and

school libraries, and will sell it herself at swap meets and other venues.

But fi rst she plans to give a copy of the book – which is dedicated to teachers – to her son’s former kindergarten teacher.

“If you don’t try it, it will never be...”

CAN YOU SAVE $10 MILLION?Th e Surrey School District is searching for $10

million in savings next year, and the public is in-vited to off er suggestions.

A longer spring break, shift ing specialist teachers to classroom duties and other cuts saved $12 mil-lion from the current operating budget.

Th e board is consulting stakeholder groups as part of its budget process, and community members are welcome to make written submissions to Wayne Noye, secretary-treasurer, 14255 56 Ave., Surrey, B.C., V3X 3A3, or by email to: [email protected].

Q: Is it true that Botox® can be used to treat my sore jaw?A: Stress, fatigue, and even depression have been linked to jaw muscle tension. Sleep can be disrupted. Grinding and clenching can cause severe physical discomfort, and damage to the teeth, which can be painful and costly to remedy. Another risk is damage to the actual temporomandibular joint. Physicians tend to rely on bruxism treatments such as anti-anxiety medications, and physical therapy to provide patients relief. While some patients enjoy moderate success with these solutioins, they do not effectively treat the true source of the patients’ discomfort - tense jaw muscles. Botox® treatment for TMJ is a simple, non-sur-gical procedure where the reconstituted protein is injected into specifi c muscles in the head and neck area blocking nerve impulses to the affected muscles, putting an almost immediate end to patients’ tension troubles. Botox® injections target only the problem-atic muscles, so jaw function is uncompromised. It is reasonable for this TMJ treatment procedure to be completed within 10-20 minutes. In a recent study conducted by the National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, two-thirds of patients found Botox® therapy curative of their TMJ symptoms after only one ses-sion. Some patients fi nd that the troublesome muscles begin to atrophy after a few sessions, so injections can be performed increasingly less often and may eventually become unnecessary. If you suffer from jaw tension or jaw pain and are tired of “solutions” that aren’t really solutions at all, contact our offi ce today to learn more about Botox therapy. This could very well be the relief you have been dreaming of. Our offi ce will perform a thorough examination to determine if Botox® treatment is the right solution for you.
