Welcome to Chicago Dramatists. Since 1979, our mission has stayed true and fast: to discover and nurture the playwrights of the future. The productions in the 2012-2013 Season are some of the best new plays by our Resident Playwrights, and represent the wide spectrum of material that Chicago Dramatists fosters.

Working with over 500 playwrights annually, Chicago Dramatists’ most important sign of achievement is its nurturing of compelling, challenging and diverse plays that move on to productions, earn awards, and define the American theatre. On Broadway last season was another Chicago Dramatists play, “Stick Fly” by Resident Playwright Lydia R. Diamond. Moreover, in the past year, our plays have seen over 800 productions, awards, readings or festival presentations, helping enrich the lives of thousands of theatre patrons across the country, exporting Chicago voices to the nation, and enhancing Chicago Dramatists’ status as one of the country’s foremost new play development theatres.

Chicago Dramatists boasts 38 Chicago Resident Playwrights, while our associate membership – The Playwrights Network – serves nearly 200 writers, nationwide. Chicago Dramatists also nurtures playwrights and new plays through its Playwrights Studio Classes, the popular 10-Minute Workshop, educational programs at challenged high schools, and The Saturday Series.

The Saturday Series is our foremost development program. Since 1979, over 1,500 plays have been presented in this weekly staged reading series. Saturdays at 2:00 pm, year-round, audiences can see and discuss some of the best new work in development in Chicago. Please join us!

Abu Ansari (Ensemble 1) is thrilled to return to the Chicago Dramatists stage, where he was last seen in Since Africa (Best Actor nom for BTAA), and delighted to be

working in his third M.E.H. Lewis production. Other Lewis projects: Creole (InFusion – Best Supporting Actor nom for Black Theatre Alliance Awards), and Burying the Bones, (StageLeft). Other credits include: Death and Harry Houdini, The Sparrow, Wilson Wants it All (The House Theatre), Bible B-Sides (Sinnerman), and To Kill a Mockingbird (Steppenwolf ). Abu is an Artistic Associate at Chicago Dramatists and Voice of the City.

Kirsten D’Aurelio (Jane) is an Associate Artist at Chicago Dramatists. She has appeared on many Chicago stages over the years, in such

shows as the critically-acclaimed, Jeff-nominated People We Know (the side project); Sidney Bechet Killed a Man (Victory Gardens); Playboy of the Western World (Illinois Humanities Festival); Sounds of Silents: The Essanay Years (Prop THTR) and many others. She’s also an Artistic Associate at 16th Street Theater, where credits include Fires in the Mirror, Menorca, and Our Holiday Stories. On the coasts, favorite roles include Misalliance (New York Classical Theatre); Twelfth Night, Comedy of Errors, and Fifteen-minute Hamlet (Shakespeare Festival Los Angeles). Kirsten holds an MFA from the University of California-Irvine. This one’s for CAS.

Casey Diers (Lighting Designer) Recent lighting design credits include Ghosts of Atwood (MPAACT) [Black Theatre Alliance Award – Best Lighting Design], Black Nativity (Congo Square Theatre) and Brothers of the Dust (Congo Square Theatre), Pretty Ballet (Joffrey Ballet), and What Once We Felt (About Face Theatre). Casey recently returned from relighting Northlight Theatre’s Outgoing Tide at the Galway Arts Festival in Galway, Ireland. Associate designs include Chesapeake Bay (Remy Bumppo), The Farnsworth Invention (Timeline) and War With the Newts (Next). Izumi Inaba (Make-Up Designer) Izumi Inaba is so happy to be working with Chicago Dramatists again after designing costumes for The Kid Thing last year. Her other recent design works include Moby Dick (Building Stage), The Ugly One (Side Show), Spring Awakening (Griffin), and Elephant’s Graveyard (Red Tape). She is honored to be accepted as the resident costume designer at Red Tape for the season, and most recently designed Skriker, which is currently running. A recipient of 2011 Non-Equity Jeff Award for Artistic Specialization in makeup design of Cats (Theo Ubique Cabaret). M.F.A. in Stage Design, Northwestern University.

Courtney Jackson (Assistant Stage Manager) This is Courtney’s first production with Chicago Dramatists. She is a recent graduate of Arizona State University where she received her B.A. in Theatre (Design and Production). Her previous credits include Our Country’s Good, The Importance of Being Ernest, Big Love, The Bible: The Complete Word of God (Abridged) (Class 6 Theatre), and assisting directing The House of the Spirits.

Todd Garcia (U/S Ensemble 1&2) is very excited to be a part of this production of Freshly Fallen Snow and to have the chance to work with Chicago Dramatists and Margaret Lewis again. Todd’s recent theater credits include, Dental Society Midwinter Meeting and Our Dad is in Atlantis (16th Street Theater); Hunting and Gathering (Theatre Seven of Chicago); Return To Haifa (Next Theatre Company); Arabian Nights (Lookingglass Theatre); Esperanza Rising (Chicago Children’s Theater); Gas For Less (Goodman Theater); as well as multiple readings and festivals around the city. Todd is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago with a degree in Musical Theater Performance and is currently enrolled at the Conservatory at Second City.

Anna Henson (Co-Projection Designer) Anna Henson is excited to return to Chicago Dramatists for her second show, having designed projections for the Jeff Nominated production of Blizzard ’67 previously. For Freshly Fallen Snow, Anna continues a collaborative relationship with co-designer Rasean Davonte Johnson, with whom she is currently founding a media design collective. Previous credits with Johnson include Porchlight Music Theatre’s tick...tick...BOOM!, TheMASSIVE’s Faust, and assistant to designer Alex Koch for Court Theatre’s world premiere of Invisible Man. Additional select Chicago credits include Impenetrable with Stage Left Theatre, and Beethoven’s ballet The Creatures of Prometheus, for the 2012 International Beethoven Project. Michael Huey (Original Music and Sound Design) is a composer who is delighted to be working with Chicago Dramatists for the first time! He has had the opportunity to project light in many theatres in Chicago over the years. M.E.H. Lewis (Playwright) M.E.H. Lewis’s work has been seen at Cherry Lane Theatre in New York, Fountain Theatre in Los Angles, The New Theatre in Melbourne, Detroit Repertory Theatre, Next Theatre in Evanston, and Stage Left Theatre in Chicago, among others. Her first play, Charms for Protection, won the Julie Harris Award. Since then, she has gone on to win many honors, including the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Work, two Illinois Arts Council Fellowships, three Ragdale Foundation Residencies, a Tremain Grant, and the FutureFest Outstanding Playwright Award. Her first production in Chicago was Stage Left’s critically acclaimed production of Burying the

Bones, which was nominated for three Joseph Jefferson awards, including Best New Work. Burying the Bones just finished a ten-week revival at Detroit Repertory Theatre, where it garnered universal critical acclaim and sold-out audiences. Other productions include Here Where It’s Safe and Fellow Travellers (winner of the Joseph Jefferson for Best New Work), both at Stage Left, Creole at InFusion Theatre Secret Language at Next Theatre, and Perfect World at Infamous Commonwealth. Her work has also been included in multiple festivals and workshops, including Stage Left’s LeapFest, American Blues’ Ripped series and Reverie Theatre’s Next Generation. Two of Lewis’s plays, Small World and Thirst (co-authored with Anita Chandwaney), are official selections of the 2012 International Women’s Theatre Festival, which will be held in Stockholm. Lewis is a Chicago Dramatists Resident Playwright, member of the Dramatists Guild and the Women’s Theatre Alliance and is thrilled to be working at Chicago Dramatists.

Gabi Mayorga (U/S Ensemble 3) is originally from Jalisco, Mexico, raised in the New Mexican desert and graduated in 2010 from The Theatre School at DePaul University. Her acting credits include Crave (Rivendell), Sonnets for an Old Century (Steppenwolf Garage), Ezperanza Rising (Goodman Theatre), andElectricidad (Merle Reskin Theatre). In New Mexico she collaborated in original performances with JK Sanchez and Moises Kaufman.

Meghan Beals McCarthy (Director) Meghan Beals McCarthy is the Associate Artistic Director for Chicago Dramatists. Recent directing credits include Bordello (Chicago Dramatists), Wild Nights with Emily (Caffeine Theatre), Keys to the Kingdom (Stage Left’s Leapfest),



Arrangements (Pavement Group) and Kingsville (Stage Left’s Leapfest). Additional workshop and reading credits include work with Goodman, Steppenwolf, Northlight, Chicago Dramatists, Stage Left, Collaboraction, Pavement Group, Caffeine Theatre and Theatre Seven (Chicago) and the Women’s Project, Abingdon Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre and The Pearl (New York), among others. Previously, she served as the 2012 co-curator for Theater on the Lake, as Literary Manager and Resident Dramaturg at Northlight Theatre, as Project Assistant for the First Look Repertory of New Work at Steppenwolf and as Interim Artistic Director for Caffeine Theatre. Before Chicago, Meghan was the Artistic Associate at the Pearl Theatre Company, a classical theatre company in New York City. Meghan earned her B.A. in Theatre at the University of Southern California and her M.F.A. in Directing at The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. She is the recent grant recipient of TCG’s Leadership University, a professional development program that will allow her to network with new play development centers across the country.

Michael McKeogh (Ensemble 2) is delighted to make his Chicago Dramatists debut in Freshly Fallen Snow. Michael is a recent graduate of the

MFA Acting program at The Theatre School at DePaul University where his credits include: I am Bradley Manning, Faustus, Blood Wedding, Much Ado About Nothing & Cabaret. Regional credits include: The Importance of Being Ernest (Phare Play Theatre, NYC); The Little Tragedies (Stepps Theatre, NYC); Othello (Boston Theatre Works, Boston); Curse of

the Starving Class, Cooking with Elvis, and The Zoo Story (Apollinaire Theatre Company, Boston). Michael is also a proud member of The Regulars improv troupe.

Becky Mock (Production Manager) - Becky is delighted to be working with Chicago Dramatists. She is a proud member of Red Tape Theatre and has served as their Production Manager since the fall of 2009. She has worked at Steppenwolf Theatre Company as the the Production Management Apprentice (09-10) and also assisted on their Garage Rep Series for the 2010-2011 season. Previously, Becky has served as the Assistant Production Manager at Emerald City Theatre and is currently freelancing in the Chicago area.

Jonathan Nook (Stage Manager) is very proud to be working with Chicago Dramatists for the first time. He is the production manager for Remy Bumppo Theatre Company. Ruthanne Swanson (Costume Designer) Ruthanne is thrilled to be collaborating with this great team on her first production at Dramatists. Ann Whitney (Clothilde Smith) has recently been named an Associate Artist of Chicago Dramatists. She is honored. In 2000 she appeared as Hetty in

Ballad Hunter here for which she received a Joseph Jefferson nomination. Since then, she has been involved in many informal readings and Saturday presentations of new plays. Other Chicago credits include: The Trojan Women, A Little NIght Music, and Passion Play (Goodman Theatre), Stepping Out - Jeff award for ensemble and Inspecting Carol (Steppenwolf ), A Delicate Balance and James Joyce’ The Dead (Court Theatre), Grey Gardens, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Quilters and Driving Miss Daisy - Sarah Siddons Society Award (Northlight Theatre). She has also appeared at Drury Lane Oakbrook, Marriott Lincolnshire and regionally at Actors Theatre of Louisville, and in Indiana at the Wagon Wheel. Her movies include the award winning The Wise Kids, Sugar, Home Alone (#1), The Fugitive and While You Were Sleeping.



Russ Tutterow (Artistic Director) has nurtured the art and careers of countless playwrights at Chicago Dramatists, where he has been Artistic Director since 1986. In 2005, he received the Artistic Leadership Award from the League of Chicago Theatres for his “outstanding achievement in developing new plays and his long time contribution to Chicago theatre.” Most recently, he directed Chicago Dramatists’ productions of Blizz 67 by J.S., Hickorydickory by Marisa Wegrzyn, A Steady Rain by Keith Huff (Jeff Award for Production and New Work, Jeff Award nomination for Direction), and Voyeurs de Venus by Lydia R. Diamond (Jeff Award for New Work). Mr. Tutterow has been involved in not-for-profit, commercial and educational theatre for over thirty-five years. He has directed, managed or taught for such Chicago theatres as Goodman, Victory Gardens, Royal George, Mercury, Briar Street, Prop, Zebra Crossing, Igloo, and Cullen, Henaghan & Platt Productions, as well as Café LaMama Hollywood, Mr. Tutterow holds an M.A. in Theatre from Northwestern University and a B.A. in Theatre from Ball State University. He was recently honored with the 2010 Spirit Award by the Equal Employment Committee of Actors Equity Association.

Brian Loevner (Managing Director): is a theatre manager, producer, production manager, and arts educator. He was a founder and the Managing Director of Theatre Conspiracy in Washington D.C. In 1998, he co-founded TriArts, Inc., where he created programming partnerships with the Chicago Park District, Gallery 37, and the Department of Aging. Over five years, Mr. Loevner grew TriArts into a Jeff nominated theatre with strong support from the theatre community.Brian Loevner has also produced and production managed over 80 shows with companies such as Famous Door Theatre, Timeline Theatre, Collaboraction, and The Actor’s Gymnasium. Further, he has worked as a consultant, helping non profits grow strong and live long. His current project is with Chicago Fringe Festival. He attended Virginia Tech and George Mason University where he majored in Theatre Arts with a focus on Arts Management. As an arts educator, he taught circus arts, clowning, and general theatre for three years at Louisa Mae Alcott School in Lincoln Park. He lives in Humboldt Park with his two daughters, Carlisle and Lucy.
