freshers’ week 2010
www.glasgowstudent.net/freshersweek
GUSA (Glasgow University Sports Association) are unsurprisingly the team with all the chat about sports. Ask anyone in pink about joining a sports club, sports demonstrations and taster sessions, or about their circus themed fancy dress party.
Their HQ for the week is the Stevie (Stevenson Building) on Oakfield Avenue, (the one with the swimming pool).
The GUU (Glasgow University Union) helpers are the folk putting on Two Door Cinema Club, Lee Nelson, BADGE and Iron Stomach. Good for chat about what’s going on in the Beer Bar and HIVE.
Their gaff is the old-school Hogwarts-esque building with the 1960s concrete extension tacked on the side at the bottom of the hill near Gibson Street.
The QMU (Queen Margaret Union) are the people behind all the events in Qudos, Lacuna & Jim’s Bar. Ask them about Pendulum, Diana Vickers, Headphone Disco, Quids and Cheesy Pop.
Their base is the angular 1960s concrete badboy sitting at the end of University Gardens.

The SRC (Students’ Representative Council) are the crew to ask about things like Freshers’ Fair, Campus Tours, Student Media and all the events in the Quadrangles.
Their gang-hut for the next 5 days is the SRC Welcome Tent which is on the grass next to the John McIntyre Building just inside the Memorial Gate.
goWelcome to Freshers Week. You’ve probably never been this in demand in your life, and possibly won’t ever be again. Seriously. Glasgow University is unusual in that there’s not one but four different student bodies (GUSA, GUU, QMU and SRC) in charge of giving you more than a degree from your time at Uni. It’s an odd system but it seems to work out better than you might think - you see, there’s been not one but four teams of people working all summer to impress you, all spurred on by a bit of good old fashioned rivalry and the hope that you might become a regular at their gaff over the next four years.
They’ve been waiting for you all summer - imagining what you’re like, what you’re into, what you’ll love and what you’ll hate - and then planning a carefully considered programme of events with the aim of turning your Freshers’ Week into the kind of OMG-SO-THIS-IS-ACTUALLY-WHAT-UNI-IS-ABOUT experience you’ve no doubt been told of fondly by a host of misty-eyed nostalgic relatives.
For the four student bodies, this week is crunch time. With 5000 freshers descending upon campus, enthusiastic helpers from each organisation will be vying for your attention and trying to persuade you that their ‘literally unmissable’ event is just that.
For you, this week is about taking advantage of your new found popularity, and doing exactly what you want. Talk to the helpers, read this guide, then make up our own mind. Relax into it, and you’ll find your only worry is how to navigate your way through the armies of PR staff from the city’s clubs and pubs who’ve camped out on University Avenue and seem intent on transforming it into something resembling the central strip in Magaluf on a Saturday night.
There’ll be some people who won’t have even read this far. They’re the ones already out the door, crash helmet on, still wearing yesterday’s clothes ready to sky dive off the university tower with their new BFFL. Kudos to them.
There’ll be others who have read this far, and are currently adrift in a sea of acronyms, coloured tshirts and garish flyers, still camping out in their room, refreshing their Facebook News Feed for news from home and wondering if anyone will notice if they go into hibernation for a full week. That’s ok too. But it’s a bit of a wasted ticket. There will be something for you. Follow your instincts and go to events that sounds like your thing, and you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by like-minded people - fun acquaintances, but also future friends for life. Don’t worry about skipping the ones that don’t appeal - considering there are over 100 events, you can rest assured that missing out on one isn’t that big a deal, no matter how unmissable Andy from Flat 2B reckons it is.
You know what they say: Freshers’ Week is the best week of your life. Use this guide wisely, go with your instincts, and you’ll find that it might actually be true.

Proving that, contrary to popular belief, the favourite sport of the middle classes is not football, but making fun of those in a more unfortunate socioeconomic situation, comedian Simon Brodkin’s chavy alter ego Lee Nelson is a stramash of antisocial views and non-PC aggression, balanced with a dose of cheeky-chappie Sarf Lahndan optimism. His stand up shows use a similar format to his benchmark TV series, Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show, interacting with the audience and taking no prisoners. Come thick-skinned and armed with a barrage of insults - this guy gives as good as he gets. Nelson aside, Brodkin has proved his credentials by becoming a firm favourite on the Edinburgh Fringe circuit, as well as winning numerous accolades and awards including Brighton’s Komedia comedy competition. ‘Hypnotist to the stars’ Alan Bates has performed for both royalty, and Graham Norton. A stalwart of the QM’s Freshers’ Week line up, the comedy stage hypnotist is more Paul McKenna than Derren Brown; previous shows have had audience members believing they’ve won the lottery or that they’re talking to their favourite celebrity on their phone - in reality, their own shoes. He continually attracts crowds who want to either judge for themselves whether it really works, or see their mates looking like prize buffoons in public. He only takes willing volunteers, so they’ve only got themselves to blame.Qudos, QMU, Wednesday 1900-2200

If you’re new to the city, it’s hard to know whose recommendations to trust in terms of where to eat, where to drink and where will actually guarantee you a good time. Although part of the fun of first year is finding yourself in establishments of dubious taste and even more dubious clientele, Subcity’s primary taste-makers are concerned that this doesn’t happen any more than it has to. They’ve commandeered an open top bus and redrawn the route to show you the places most people won’t find until third year, while a straight-talking tour guide gives you the lowdown on the essential shops, pubs and clubs.Buses - SRC Welcome Tent, Tues 1300, 1400, 1500

What better way to acquaint yourself with the beautiful conservation area that is the West End of Glasgow than through the grill of a shopping trolley at high speed? Somewhere between Fun House and a mental and physical endurance test, teams of three take on various challenges, from the afore-mentioned trolley racing to scavenger hunts, endurance eating and races - a dangerous combination if ever there was one.
For those of you who are exhausted even reading that, don’t be fooled by the title: this ‘all day’ games event runs from 1pm-5pm, so there’s plenty of time for recovery afterwards when you can hopefully bask in the hard-earned glory of your prizes, which last year ranged from skiing and paintballing days to the ubiquitous crate of booze. For a more visual impression of some of the sports on offer, the Sports Demonstrations feature current club members showing off their mad skillz. It’s obviously limited to what they can do within the university’s medieval Quadrangles - think kick boxing and cheerleading, rather than surfing or mountaineering. Although, knowing the GUSA helpers, there’ll be someone willing to give it a go. Quadrangles, Main Building, Tuesday & Wednesday 1000-1600

Louis Walsh called her “a little hippie”. Simon Cowell likened her to Marmite, and she very nearly had ended up holed in a studio with Gary Barlow after he threatened her with a record deal. Whatever you think of 2008 X Factor semi-finalist Diana Vickers, you can’t deny she’s fully earned her place. Fans across the UK will be taking out a second mortgage to see her in huge arenas on her solo headline tour in November, so take advantage of this chance to unashamedly warble along to Once and The Boy Who Murdered Love in a relatively intimate space without blowing half your student loan. Come on - now you’ve got this far, you can afford to relax a little in terms of proving yourself to be the coolest thing out there. Put your carefully-built muso credentials aside for one night and barge your way to the front. You know you want to.Qudos, QMU, Monday 1900-2200

With prizes ranging from TVs and DVD players to toilet roll, you can’t deny that, like Ronseal, this one really does do what it says on the tin: it’s a pub quiz, but it’s also really useful. It’s not just the prizes either - amongst a mix of games and questions, there’s a Glasgow round where you’ll learn some secrets about the university. You can also win beer, which, will no doubt persuade a few extra ‘friends’ to join your table for the rest of the night. Jim’s Bar, QMU, Monday 1400-1600

A GUU tradition dating back to at least the 1960s. The selection of delicacies on last year’s menu, themed around the deceptively tasty sounding Birthday Party - included cake laced with seafood and jelly studded with olives and gherkins, leading many people to wonder why anyone in their right mind would put themselves through ten rounds of this stomach punishing macho endurance test. There was an Xbox 360 up for grabs: that’s why.
The Beer Bar is usually bursting with a ruckus crowed cheering on the bare chested contestents as they force down the next dish on the menu. One of the only events you’ll ever attend at which vomit is a key feature. A word of advice: don’t go hungover.Beer Bar, GUU, Friday 1900-2200

On one hand, you have the Principal congratulating you on your fine choice of university, and no doubt something inspired about the lack of university places. On the other, you’ve got the spectacle that is the shameless one-upmanship between the unions and their groups of helper cheerleaders. You’ll regret it if you miss the one truly ceremonial event this week, and the one which (mainly) befits the neo-Gothic, Hogwarts-esque grandeur of the main building. In fact, there’s not really anything like it until you graduate. Get down early if you want a seat as it reaches capacity every year.Bute Hall, Main Building, Monday 1200-1400

El Hornet and MC Verse from Pendulum destroyed the QMU when they played last year. Their accessible, party-inducing mix of drum n bass remixes of pop hits and jump up anthems had the place jumping from the first drop to the last. Of course they’ve shed a few drum n bass geeks from their fan club since breaking onto the daytime Radio 1 playlist, but their reputation as a live act is still well deserved, so ignore the too cool for school crew and prepare for a full reach-for-the-lasers epileptic nightmare of light show, and no doubt an indecent use of the reee-wind. You don’t have to be studying politics to be political, and you don’t have to fall into a bra-burning cliché of yourself to make a statement. Although it’s often associated with liberal hippies and/or ‘troublemakers’ by sensationalist red tops, activism is about so much more than causing a ruckus - although it’s often part of the process, and part of the fun. Whether you’ve already fought the law and chained yourself to a burning bank, or whether you’re utterly clueless about what you want to achieve, this is a good way of finding out what it’s about and how to get involved. A series of speakers will deliver short speeches throughout the afternoon with questions and a chat afterwards.SRC Marquee, Quadrangles, Thursday 1230-1650

The GUSA party is a solid staple of Freshers’ Week: the effort and energy the Sports Association helpers put into their themed parties is impressive, and is usually rewarded with an up-for-it crowd, dressed in home-made outfits, and genuine party atmosphere.
This time the Debates Chamber will be transformed into a circus, so you can indulge your inner child with jugglers, face painting and no doubt some creepy clowns. So make an effort, dress up and cross off ‘being drunk at a circus’ from your list of things to do before you die. Debates Chamber, GUU, Wednesday 1900-0200

If you’ve just sat through the Freshers’ Address, you’ve got a choice of reward: stuff your face with free char-grilled meat (or veg alternative) over at the QM, or get a beer (or soft alternative) courtesy of the GU President (and everyone’s new best friend) Colin, who’s buying the biggest round you’ll ever experience for anyone who makes it down there within the hour.
Bonus points for anyone who spots the few crafty freshers running up University Avenue towards the GU wiping burger relish off their chin to get in on both. Of course, you could always get in on both, if you don’t mind giving yourself indigestion boosting down Uni Avenue with burger relish on your chin.Beer Bar / Jim’s Bar, GUU / QMU, Monday 1400

The Debates Chamber is one of the GU’s proud glories, launching the political careers of Charles Kennedy, John Smith, Donald Dewar and Menzies Campbell. This social event is your chance to find out how to get your name added to that list. It’s also a chance to meet society members before the first debate on Saturday, which will feature MSP Sandra White taking on former dancer Sarah Vernon on the motion “this house condemns pole dancing”. Just so you’re aware exactly what is being debated, the GU Pole Dancing Society have been kind enough to arrange a demonstration before the event.Reading Room, GUU, Thursday 1400-1600 (Debate is in Debates Chamber, GUU, Satuday 2100-2200)

Alex, Sam and Kevin gave up their own university places in 2007 after their electro tinged indie pop demos started getting some serious attention on their MySpace. They released their first album in March and have toured with Autokratz, Foals, Delphic and Metronomy, as well as being lauded by Zane Lowe and Kissy Sell Out. Jealous? Dancing to their energetic, feel-good indie tracks such as Something Good Can Work and I Can Talk may well be the key if you’re looking to mourn your own thwarted dreams of rock n’ roll stardom. Don’t worry, by the time they’re bemoaning the superficiality of fame and checking into rehab, you’ll have a degree behind you, and for many people, a BA in Engineering Technologies is just as exciting as a platinum selling album and international recognition.Debates Chamber, GUU, Monday 2030-0200

Like the Freshers’ Fair, but for sports clubs. And, with 48 clubs on show, all the same rules apply - give yourself time to browse as many as you can, and get involved with anything that vaguely appeals. The range is impressive, from badminton to potholing, shinty to Muay Thai. On your average night the music in the HIVE ranges from cheesy chart classics to current dance anthems, with karaoke upstairs for those brave enough - though, with a ridiculous nine bars, it’s safe to say the HIVE is normally more about the ‘random banter’ than highbrow musical pursuits.
However, electro fans will be pleased to hear that on Thursday the tunes will be in the very respectable hands of DJ and producer Alex Metric (above), who recently lent his Midas remixing touch to the likes of Gorillaz’ Stylo and Phoenix’s Lisztomania.HIVE, GUU, Thursday 2100-0200

Glasgow is the darling of many a broadsheet newspaper’s music columnist, and their slavering sycophancy is surprisingly spot on: the city is brimming with creativity and brooding young artists. Usually an opportunity for singer-songwriters and musicians to showcase their talent, open mic night Unplugged is changing the format for Freshers’ Week and focusing on its other main selling point: providing a snapshot of what the Glasgow music scene has to offer, and a hub for those who want to be part of it. With a rare acoustic set from Twin Atlantic (pictured above) nabbing the headline spot, you’ll also be nose-to-tail with a selection of up-and-coming Glasgow bands. Definitely not your average student radio station, one of the ways in which Subcity continue to prove themselves - both on and off campus - is through their brand of hedonistic club nights. With past and present station talent behind the decks, they always remain three steps ahead of the game.
If Subcity want to tell you how to Stay Fresh, you’d do well to listen. True to form, this year’s party takes you to the relatively new Studio Warehouse SWG3, a grungy exhibition space about 20 mins walk from campus complete with exposed brickwork and the unmistakable stench of scenester debauchery, that also hosts one off clubs and band nights, and is home to an artistic community at the forefront of the city’s creative scene. See tonight as an introduction to the trademark Subcity combination of oversized subs and undersized dancefloors - if you’re not a fan of intimate, sweaty parties driven by bass, sharp visuals and pretty much any credible dancing music from wonk to Baltimore, you should probably avoid these guys over the next few years.
If however you do fancy it, then you can either make your own way down or if you’re in Murano or QM Halls get on the Subcity bus. Recognising that opportunities to make friends don’t always present themselves organically, and using a similar format to speed dating, a host will direct the chat as well as organise some games to break the ice. This should be a great way to cross-fertilise your new friendship gene-pool beyond the scope of your flatmates, and a great way for home students to meet new faces. At best, you could find yourself chatting to someone who’s on the same wavelength or shares your weird passion for cheese and jam on toast. At worst, you’ll end up with a few unwanted Facebook friend requests. Lacuna, QMU, Tuesday 1500-0200

Amongst all the other unique selling points littering the promotion material, one of the less talked about features of this city is that it has its own language: Glaswegian. For some, this barrier will be enough to leave them stumped in taxis for a good few months. For those of you can handle something a bit more exotic, the Polyglot Cafe is a social event for international students and language students to chat in whatever language they fancy over a cup of tea. If your knowledge of foreign languages doesn’t extend much further than telling people you like to play tennis at the weekend, it is also for anyone interested in learning, so don’t let that put you off.Reading Rooms, GUU, Friday 1400-1600

Its willing victims have been known to realise, halfway through their degree, that they can’t actually remember what subject they enrolled in or where the lectures take place. They are, however, now working as journalists, designers and presenters. Glasgow’s relatively small size makes it a great place to sow the seeds of a glittering meee-ja career, and student organisations are often where you’ll develop an indispensable network of talented contacts, as well as some fascinating friends. Each organisation - GUST, Guardian, GUM and Subcity - will do a short presentation, with questions and a look around their facilities afterwards.Williams Room, John McIntyre Building Friday 1300-1400

By this point in the week, dictated by a looming hangover, the temptation might be to head down just before this finishes, grab some goodie bags, and head to one of the unions to dissect the contents over a hard earned pint/the hair of the dog. Bear in mind that everyone else has had the same idea. Make an effort to be the early bird, and the Freshers’ Fair is one of the week’s most unexpected pleasures, leisurely browsing the myriad of specialised student societies out there - from the Tinfoil Hat Brigade to the Chivalric Dream Society.
