FINAL PLANNING FOR OUR SOAP OPERA “FRESHERS”

JOSH PALMER

MAIN CONVENTIONS FOR A SOAP OPERA

- Big close ups are used to show emotion- Use camera as fourth wall- Filmed on a set and not on a location- Central place where the soap is based around i.e.

Eastenders has the Queen Vic.- Conflict and disequilibrium in each episode in order to

keep the viewers glued to the program. - A number of main characters that appear in every

episode – this allows the viewers the make emotional connections with certain characters.

Here are the storylines me and my group came up with in our first share of ideas; before hand we had decided our soap opera to be catered for a young audience therefore this slightly channeled the type of storylines we were putting forward.

Page 4: FRESHERS Planning

We did not choose these two storylines for a number of reasons. Firstly the prostitute scenario would have been very hard to film and to make it look professional would have been very challenging. The same applies to the ‘rape’ storyline, this would of also been to graphic and very hard to get across to the audience in short trailer.

STORYLINES

DRUG STORY – STORY BOARD 1

This storyboard includes Monica and Sam with Monica playing ‘Mon’ and Sam playing ‘Grimmers’.

In this storyline Grimmers is forcing Mon to take drugs against her own will. Mon looks very uncomfortable this is shown by her facial expressions and we have chose to use certain shots to represent her discomfort as well; such as the over the shoulder shot that we have used makes Grimmers look overpowering.

GAY STORY – STORY BOARD 2

This story board includes Josh and Sophie, Josh playing JP and Sophie playing Soph.

In this storyline JP confesses to his best friend that he is a homosexual as it has been on his mind for a while now and starting to feel like a burden. This comes a shock to Soph therefore we use a close up shot reverse shot which highlights the reaction on her face as she is told.

RUN AWAY STORY– STORY BOARD 3

This storyboard includes Shadia and Harriet playing the roles of Shad and Hal.

In this storyline Hal decides to run away due to her current circumstances. You see her leave a note on the table for her sister Shadia. When it gets to the point when Shad comes in the house and into the kitchen she see’s the note and calls Hal. As this happens there is a quick edit leading to Hal at the train station rejecting the call. I decided to leave the ending with some suspense as from viewing the trailer the viewer will not know if Hal actually got on the train – this is a convention of soap opera trailers.

On the right is a Shot List which me and my group made to help construct the soap opera FRESHERS. We used this on set in order to help set up the positioning of the camera to the positioning of the actors in the frame. Having this structure helped a lot and it even allowed us to improvise with shot types when we needed to.
