Coming to university is a daunting but exciting experi-ence. Aside from your degree, it’s that extra-curricu-lar activity that is becoming more and more important, and this is where UWE Students’ Union is here to help! This paper will show you all the different ways you can get involved in university life from the first few weeks at UWE and beyond.

We are here to represent you on a range of issues, and we want to give you opportunities to develop extra skills and talents on top of your degree. We offer a huge variety of societies, sports and networks, all of which give you the chance to get involved in something fun and different.

You are part of an ever-growing student community that we are proud to work for and represent. We work hard to promote the diversity of this community by being inclusive for all. We look forward to providing more for you this coming year, through the develop-ment and construction of our brand new £9.2 million Students’ Union building.

From my personal experience, getting involved with a Sports Club whilst at university is the best decision you can make. Whether you have been involved in sports all your life or wish to try one of our 38 sports for the very first time, we cater for all.

Our sports accommodate all athletes, whether you are just trying to exercise for a few hours a week, or you are looking to represent UWE in the British Universi-ties and College Sports (BUCS) league.Sport Clubs at UWE will not only give you a great op-portunity to blow off steam whilst at university but will significantly increase the number of friends you make and the different types of people you will meet.This year my role incorporates a focus on health, so we will keep you informed on a range of health issues whether it be the importance of regular exercise or providing recipes for healthy and affordable meals.The Students’ Union also runs a successful Sports Night to help you celebrate your inevitable sporting successes.

Chris White - VP Sports & Health

As a student gaining a place at UWE through clearing, I was unable to secure a place in halls along with my fellow freshers and was forced to find my own accommodation with older students in house off campus. In short I found it harder to make secure friendships with other freshers in my first 2 weeks at uni and struggled feeling a little bit lonely and a little out of place. However, having danced since i was very young, I dragged myself along to the dance auditions and within the first fifteen minutes became friends with a girl I now share a house with.

Dance has provided me with a secure, driv-en and like minded friendship group that I feel as if I have known for 20 years rather than the past 24 months, giving me more safety and comfort than I could ever ask for. It has given me personal release, motiva-tion and been that constant element in my week that I would look forward to when studying got on top of me. Not only has it kept me fit and kept me sane, it has al-lowed me to feel a true part of UWE and of the entire sport community, allowing me to give something back to my fellow students and dancers, as well as the University.

Some of the campaigns we have been involved in have included Mental Health Awareness, Sexual Health and empowering students with greater knowledge on their rights and responsibilities as tenants. Student Reps sit at every level throughout the universi-ty and Students’ Union; they are the vital link between students, the university and the Students’ Union. They actively seek the views and opinions of students on their course, making sure you have the best student experience possible. Student Reps create small changes which make a big difference on their course; they also get involved in the big changes and decisions about the university and Students’ Union.

Anyone can put themselves forward to be a Student Rep! Student Reps are democratically elected in the first few weeks of term to represent students on their course. So look out for UWE Staff asking for people to nominate themselves! Don’t worry if you haven’t done anything like this before… the Students’ Union provides all the support and guidance you will need!

What?!Student Reps are the vital link between the students, the Students’ Union and the University. They are elected by you at the start of the year and rep-resent your views at different University and Students’ Union meetings.

If you are happy with your student experience or not, you can feedback your views and see changes made to your university experience for the better. Last year Student Reps created over 600 actions which resulted in hundreds of changes made at a course, department, Students’ Union and University level.

Join a 1,000 strong student representative team, and create real changes on your course, in your department and at your University!

How?!You can get involved with Student Reps in two ways:

1) Become a Student Rep! Be bold and stand for election and you could become the voice of students on your course! Look out for lecturers asking who wants to be a Student Rep in the first few weeks of term, put your hand up and make a change!

2) Feedback to your Student Rep, so they can make changes on your behalf!

Bower Ashton campus is set on the edge of the beautiful parkland of Ashton Court Estate, whilst remaining close to the city centre. Students at Bower are artists, design-ers and media students.

Superbowl XLVIII

The Giants and the Jets co-host the biggest sporting event in the world on February 2nd – 3rd 2013. Starting late on Sunday and finishing in the early hours of Monday morning the Super Bowl is a sporting Spectacle on the grandest of stages. We will be offering a massive party in escape bar to accommodate. Free entry, drinks deals and of course the game in all its glory.

Campaigning means creating change, whether this being public behav-iour, institutional policy and practice, or even the smallest change that makes a big difference to you. We use this definition because we believe that if we want to make a difference to students’ lives, we need to first identify the change we want to make, and then consider the most effec-tive way to achieve it together.

Who’s taking you home tonight…………?

Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles are generally a very safe way to travel, but is the car you are about to get into one of them?

Why are they safe?

• Vehicles are regularly tested and required to meet minimum standards and will have appropriate insurance checks

• Drivers are tested (for medical and criminal issues) before being licensed to drive

Make sure your taxi or private hire vehicle is legal

Using unlicensed vehicles puts you at unnecessary risk

What’s the difference between taxis / private hire vehicles? • Taxis – can be hired immediately from a rank or by hailing.

• Private Hires – MUST be pre-booked through a licensed operator

How do I know if a vehicle / driver is licensed? Ask to see proof of licensing:

• A licensed vehicle will normally display a licence plate (these can be on the front or rear of the vehicle) which will include the licensing authority, the licence number and the vehicle registration number.

• A licensed driver will wear an identity badge (or will display one), which will show the drivers licence number and licensing authority details.

Stay Safe: • make a note of the number plate and driver's licence number and if uneasy text them to a friend /

family • sit in the back of the vehicle • keep your mobile phone where it is easily accessible • report any concerns to the licensing authority (your local council)

Do not use a cab if:

• the driver appears to be under the influence of alcohol • the driver does not seem to know the local area • the vehicle seems to be too old for use as a cab • the vehicle is in a state of disrepair • you are uneasy for any reason

Let’s Build a New Students’ Union

This is a really exciting time to come to UWE as we’re about to start building a £9.2 million purpose built Students’ Union just for you.

The project aim is to build a dedicated and centrally located Students’ Union building offering social and leisure activi-ties, trading and support services, all contained within a single building. The building will consist of a bar, a purpose built venue space, a coffee shop, a shop, student engage-ment areas and office accommodation for support staff.

Construction is due to start in Summer 2013 and is planned for completion in January 2015.

With events like the Boat Race and Rugby, thousands of support-ers arrive from both universities to cheer them on.
