remember my own experience ofwhat was then the University College(UCWI) and the excitement that ranthrough the institution in those earlydays Those of us who were fortunateenough to have been accepted to the

edgling institution met other youngmen and women who had recentlygraduated from high schools acrossthe region and formed friendshipsthat in many cases have lasted overhalf a century

The Hall experience is a veryrewarding one There is alwayssomeone who will give advice bethere to listen when the challenges

seem particularly difcult and offerguidance in situations which for manyof you will be very new For manyUniversity has been the foundationon which onersquos whole life has beenbuilt and they remain grateful forhow it allowed them to develop theexperiences that it provided andthe values that they have embraced

Rex Nettleford Hall was rst envisioned when the then Director ofStudent Services and Development Dr Thelora Reynolds took ofcein 1996 She identied as one of the Universityrsquos problems the needfor an affordable housing solution that would satisfy a large number of

students After consulting with Student Services and Development ManagersMr Carlton Lowrie and Mr Peter OrsquoSullivan the group worked in coordinationwith the Executive Director of the National Housing Trust Mr MilvertonReynolds and formulated a plan to add new blocks to Chancellor and TaylorHalls However this idea was soon further revolutionised resulting in the birthof perfection the Rex Nettleford Hall

Located only a short walk from the MonaBowl the hall is nestled comfortably inthe foothills of the famed Blue MountainPeak This location is quiet and serenefar away from the lsquohumdrumrsquo of Campuslife and undoubtedly fosters good studyhabits which are vital for survival atthis University With nine clusters andlarge open spaces the Hall is ideal forcommunity life Rexans proudly boastof a computer lab laundromat state ofthe art multipurpose room and the RedSquare- the hub of all the hallrsquos activities

I am delighted to welcome you to theUniversity of the West Indies and theRex Nettleford Hall of Residence

As alumni I can proudly say thatthis Hall has been home to some of

the brightest and most talented youngminds I believe the Caribbean has tooffer During my course of stay at theRex Nettleford Hall I had the prizedopportunity to meet share mingleand form lifetime bonds with a verydiverse set of individuals This settingprovided the perfect environment forus to learn from each other realizehow similar we are and to appreciatethe variances which make each of usunique

Like most pilgrims you will morethan likely be experiencing mixed

emotions On one hand you areexcited about making it to Universityand having the freedom comfort andconvenience which comes with Halllife On the other hand you might befeeling overwhelmed by the thoughtof being far away from home for anextended period the challenge ofadjusting to the new environment andthe responsibility of choosing how you

will manage your academics timeand money I promise you that if youpay keen attention to the informationbeing dispensed you will not havemany problems in overcoming thesechallenges

In my 1st year I was bombarded withthe notions of trying to adapt to thisnew lifestyle I decided to work in theRex Mini Mart and quickly becamesupervisor I continued to learn growand adapt to my new surroundingsuntil I left the hall after serving twotenures as Hall Committee Treasurer

Now I sit wondering and reminiscingof who I used to be and what I usedto do before I stepped foot onto THERex Nettleford Hall The answer tothose questions lies in what I amtoday I am innovative industrious

and honest but above all else I amPROUD BRAVE and STRONGThese attributes were always presentbut I just did not know it Rex and themany good Rexans showed me howto take pride in all of my endeavoursThey showed me how to be brave inall manners of adversity and to bestrong in faith against any tyranny(FD14A) I may be faced withThese are also my wishes for youI challenge you to seize each andevery opportunity that comes yourway Be the change you want to seeand I assure you that you will leave abetter person and maybe even a Rex

This is a good question I laughedwhen I read it To be honest I am notfully aware of who Paula Powlett isand I like that I like nding out whatmakes me happy and sad whatexcites me and what doesnrsquot and Ithink thatrsquos what university is all about

As a regional student how wouldyou describe being part of theRexan family and how it has

impacted you

Everything in life impacts you in someway or another and moving to Jamaicafrom Barbados and becoming a partof the Rexan family is no different Letme rst say I absolutely love all of myRexan family Being able to interactwith people from all cultures andwalks of life - it is amazing Becoming

a Rexan has opened my eyes to somany different things I have learnedso much about myself and I handlesituations differently One of the bestfeelings to have is to know someonesupports you and being a part ofthe Rexan family and know 800+

people support you there is no way todescribe that feeling

What are some of your plans asMiss Rex 2013 for the upcoming

year

As Miss Rex Nettleford Hall 2013 Ihope to meet and interact with asmany Rexans as possible I try tobe a very approachable and openperson so I hope that any Rexan canfeel comfortable and come talk to meI hope to hear their ideas for anything

that will push the hall forward I alsohope to work very closely with theLittle Black Dress Society as myplatform because I have some cooland exciting ideas I canrsquot wait to try

What advice do you have forFreshers in taking advantage ofthe many opportunities Rex and

the University
