Meeting lots of interesting people fromacross the globe as well as being spoiledwith a fantastic fortnight filled with anexciting and varied entertainmentsprogramme. Here are some top tips forthose first few weeks in University.

Say Hello! Don’t be shy – introduce yourself.Everyone is in the same position as youand will probably be just as scared too. Ifyou’re in halls your flatmates willprobably be the people who you spendthe rest of your uni life with, so make sureyou hit it off right. Ask if they need helpunpacking, ask where they’re from, whatcourse they’re doing – anything! Don’thide away in halls or at home either. There are loads of places to chill oncampus….. like the Students’ Union!

Temptations Student life can be a hot bed forexperimenting. You’re free andindependent and there is plenty to temptyou! However, don’t be naïve aboutrecreational drug taking and sexualhealth the Students’ Union Advice Centreis on hand for help and advice.

Ear Plugs Student accommodation can often beloud, crazy places to live in. When therockers next door are moshing late intothe night, or your Britney loving housemate is dancing the night away… reachfor the plugs!

Register with a doctor. The University Health Centre can befound at the bottom of campus and isavailable to students at Storthes Halland students who live within a 3 mileradius of campus.

Safe and secureIf you are bringing valuables, it might beworth getting your stuff insured - have alook at the Endsleigh leaflet deliveredwith this guide, or check on the web andsee if you can get yourself a good deal.

If you’re feeling a little bitapprehensive or maybe a littlelost when you first get hereremember everyone else is inthe same boat as you!

Student Survival You’re about to have themost fun you’ve ever had.

Page 22: Freshers' Guide 2011

The Students’ Union works hard toensure minimal environmentalimpact, focussing closely on energyconsumption and wastage.

We are proud that none of our wastegoes to landfill. This year 15.44 tonnesof waste from the Students’ Unionwas recycled, with 13.66 tonnes beingrecycled locally.

We also look at how we can reduceour comsumption - this year we havedecreased our electricity consumptionby 2,145 kilowatts - that’s enough topower a student flat for 5 months!

The Students’ Union encouragesstudents to get involved with ourenvironmental policies and activities. This goes further than justencouraging you to recycle your waste. The Students’ Union Exec team aresetting up an area at Storthes Hall –the University’s biggest student hallsof residence whereinterested students cangrow their own veg!

If you would like to getinvolved in being a littlemore green whilst at Unithen get in touch withKieran, Comms Officer(details on page5)

Accreditation

GUIDEto Huddersfield

Places to visitThe unquestionably superb

location of Huddersfield means

that a trip to the larger northern

cities of Leeds and Manchester is

simple from the train station. With

trains just about every 20 minutes

to Leeds and every half an hour to

Manchester, you’d be silly not to!

Around Huddersfield as well there

is plenty to see and do. From the

beautiful views on a sunny day at

Castle Hill to a whole host of

interesting museums to the old

quaint streets of nearby town,

Holmfirth – the location for hugely

popular TV series Last of the

Summer Wine – you will not be

bored, guaranteed!

Huddersfield is a true Yorkshire town, full ofsurprising qualities, strong traditions, impressivearchitecture, quality shopping, top class sport, exciting festivals and artistic reputation all set onthe edge of the wonderful scenery of the PeakDistrict National Park and South Pennines.

Students’ UnionOf course, all this being said, you

need not look further than your

Students’ Union, in the middle of

Queensgate campus to purchase

your daily lunch, wake up with a

coffee, enjoy a quiet drink, watch a

band, seek advice or join a sports

team. So pop in whenever and we

will make you feel more than

welcome!

Night-lifeOf course, your Students’ Union has

the best bar in town, but there is no

denying that throughout Huddersfield

there are a whole load of different

types of bars for you to chill out after

a long hard day at uni!

Most of the town’s bars are within

easy walking distance of the main

campus and the town has two or

three quality nightclubs where you

can choose to end your evening,

unless you get lucky ;-)

ShopsHuddersfield town centre has a

range of national and independent

retail shops to serve even the most

hardend shoppers addiction!

From the modern Kingsgate

Shopping Centre, located just a

stone’s throw away from the main

Queensgate Campus to the historic

and stylish Byram Arcade with its

independent boutiques and cafés

near to the train station through to

the historic Queensgate Market,

Huddersfield is an up and coming

town with lots of places for you to

visit to update your wardrobe.
