Oldest culture

forges new

beginnings A traditional Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony has

connected our newest facility with our oldest

culture, reminding us of the importance of the past

while marking a new beginning for Blacktown

Hospital.

Aboriginal Elder Brendan Kerin said the ceremony

actually begins from the moment the request is

made.

“Before I pick the leaf, I sing the song into the tree. I

pick the leaf, and when I burn the leaf that song is

released in the smoke,” Brendan said.

“It’s done for a lot of different things - to cleanse, to

get rid of bad energy. What we’re doing here today

is to clean the slate, and out of respect we do a

smoking ceremony to let the ancestors and the

spirits know that we are having a gathering on

country.

“We come in with good energy and to clean the

slate to make everything fresh.”

Brendan encourage everyone to wash themselves in

the smoke, describing it as a “shower for the inside

of your body”.

Thank you to Brendan, our guests Pauline and

Adriana, Yvonne, Lynette and Narelle, and our staff

and their families for attending.

Shiny, preppy people

Our hospital staff have been busy getting ready for the next series of openings. Starting next week, Birthing,

Newborn Care, Perioperative Services, Maternity and Women’s Health will open in the new building. If you

happen to know someone booked in for a procedure, or expecting a baby, their hospital team will advise them

about the move.

Don’t forget it’s Daffodil Day! In our stage 1 Infusion Therapies Centre, patient Nilini was having her second-last round of chemo under the care of nurses Michael and Stella.
