What kind of career do youhope to follow?I’ve been going back and forth overthis, but I’m pretty sure I’d like togo into interpreting and translating, possibly even in the army, as alanguage analyst. I think it wouldbe so sad to leave university and not use my language skills. I’d alsohope to pick up a second language.I did wild modules in Russian in mysecond year and really enjoyed it.

What is the accommodation likeon campus? It’s very nice. I was surprisedbecause when you think of studentaccommodation you imaginesomething pretty basic. But I was inPark Wood and it felt homely, therewere good facilities, it was easyto meet people and everyone wasvery friendly. It was a great studentcommunity. In fact, it felt like livingat Center Parcs!

What about the facilities oncampus?Even in my final year, I’m still findingnew places to go on campus, andthings are always being updated. There’s such a range of activities, too. In my first year I played a lot ofmusic – I play the flute, piano andguitar; now I’ve had a completechange and joined the Rowing Club.

Any advice for someone comingto Kent?Do as much as you can, meet asmany people as you can; it’s sucha hectic and crazy time but youshould embrace every newexperience. Have fun; enjoy it.

Lucy Skinner is in herfinal year of studyingFrench.

Why did you choose to studyat Kent?I looked at a number of universitiesand Kent was definitely the bestfor French. It really is a ‘Europeanuniversity’ – geographically it’s closeto the rest of Europe and there arelots of European students here.

How’s your course going? It’s going really well. I had expectedthe first year to be a big jump upfrom studying at A level, but it wasactually quite a smooth transition. You get a lot of help and supportfrom the lecturers. The biggestdifference was getting used touniversity life and the system here. But the teaching is fantastic – thelecturers are knowledgeable andyou can approach them aboutalmost anything and they’re happyto assist you. And now I’m workingon my dissertation they’re reallyhelpful – they’re always ready totalk about it, and they even lendme books.

I’ve particularly enjoyed the literaturemodules – a couple of them havedefinitely sparked my interest ingender in French writing, and I’veenjoyed looking at different culturesfrom a French perspective. Forinstance, we studied how Japaninfluenced French writing in thelate 19th and early 20th centuries– not just literature, in fact, butpainting too.

How would you describe yourfellow students?I can’t say a bad word aboutanyone! They’re all so nice andwe all get on well. There’s a goodchemistry in lectures and seminarsand we have fantastic discussions –our debates are open and friendly.

Do you practise speakingFrench to each other?Definitely – you can always talkto other students and there’sthe Erasmus and French Societiesyou can go to; people are reallyapproachable. That’s a great thingabout Kent – everyone gets along. There’s also a tandem systemwhere you’re paired up withsomeone who speaks French.

How was your year abroad? It was quite an experience. I wasstudying in Lyon and found theuniversity and teaching styles verydifferent in France. Lecture andseminar groups were much largerand you had to listen to the lectures, take it in, learn and repeat, whereashere you’re encouraged to beindependent and explore your ownideas – it’s less rigid. But it was afantastic year, being immersed ina different culture. And my French-speaking skills improved in leapsand bounds. Before going thereI could understand basic French, but when you’re in the country youhave to deal with colloquialismsand regional accents, and I reallynoticed the difference in my abilitieswhen I came back for my final year.
