People associate Fremantle with historic buildings, the unique and hard to put into words ‘Freo vibe’ and the city’s strong and highly visible links to the past. The Fremantle Heritage Festival showcases this by telling the stories of the people, the buildings and the culture that have formed the foundation of our great city.

The festival honours and explores the settlement and early days of Fremantle, while revelling in the nostalgia of not-so-distant memories.

Through the wide assortment of events including walking tours, musical performances and historical displays on offer over the 10-day festival, people can discover Freo’s colourful past and see how it continues to play a big part in shaping the city’s future.

This year’s program of events includes some well established favourites alongside a range of exciting new additions.

Arthur Grady Day will once again enliven Kings Square with an array of vintage motorcycles, prams and fascinating items from our past. This year, be sure to send a message via morse code thanks to the Morsecodian Society and ride the vintage bus down to the Maritime Museum for their The Unknown Museum tours.

There are also some new additions that give a fun new spin to Fremantle’s heritage such as the 70s and 80s themed roller discos being hosted by Rollaways and “Fremantle…the worst damn hole I ever saw”, a three course dinner of authentic 1920s recipes presented with tales of murder, arson and colourful history.

So join us as we celebrate the stories that make up the rich tapestry of Fremantle both in the distant past and our childhoods.

Arthur Grady DayIn 1924 Fremantle bicycle maker Arthur Grady became the first person to ride a motorcycle around Australia. Arthur Grady Day celebrates his achievement with vintage enthusiasts gathering in Kings Square, Fremantle, to showcase their own veteran, vintage and classic motorcycles. Other treasured vehicles are also displayed alongside buses, machinery, tools and prams. You will surely hear before you even see the traction engine rolling up and down William Street with steam billowing in its wake. Various societies and institutes will be present too – one example being the Morsecodians Fraternity of Western Australia who can codify a message for you! Come down to Fremantle and enjoy all things vintage and re-live, or learn about, the past.

Curtin’s First WarKeynote address by Professor Deborah Gare, The University of Notre Dame AustraliaJohn Curtin led Australia during the darkest months of World War II. As Prime Minister (the only one to serve from Western Australia), he was also the Member for Fremantle. Since his death in office, just weeks before the war’s end, Curtin has been remembered as one of the nation’s greatest war-time leaders.

Yet in a twist of history, Curtin found himself acting against a Labor government—and in prison—during World War I. It was a bitter contest. Curtin exposed astonishing abuses of executive power, frightening surveillance of Australia’s civilian population, resisted government aggression and defied demands that he enlist for military service.

A striking comparison can be made between the abuse of executive power that Curtin resisted in 1916, and those we face today. Militarism, imperialism, secrecy, the surveillance of citizens, summary arrests, government aggression, intimidation and censorship of the press are themes common to Australia’s World War I history and to the modern age.

Join Professor Deborah Gare as she rethinks the enduring importance of Curtin’s first war and enjoy refreshments after the second annual Fremantle Heritage Festival Keynote Address.

Professor Gare is a Professor of History at The University of Notre Dame Australia. She is a popular speaker in the Fremantle Heritage Festival and is well known for her work on the history of women in Fremantle and the diary of Mary Ann Friend. In 2014, Deborah published When War Came to Fremantle, 1899-1945 with Madison Lloyd-Jones, a PhD student at Notre Dame, and was the Visiting Scholar at the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library.

and the returned soldiers of the Great WarDr Leigh Straw, Edith Cowan UniversityOne hundred years after Gallipoli, Australians continue to consider events at Anzac Cove to be foundational ones in the nation’s story. Yet the Anzac story, as it was publicly imagined, was often far removed from the personal experience of returning soldiers. The trauma of war affected the mental and physical wellbeing of more than a few ex-servicemen, impairing their process of return and repatriation. This, for some, led to a thwarted sense of effectiveness and belonging. In 2014, Dr Leigh Straw shared remarkable stories of Fremantle’s criminal women during the Heritage Festival program. This year, she joins us again to consider the personal struggles of Fremantle’s soldiers who made it home from the Great War.

Defending FremantleDr Shane Burke, The University of Notre Dame AustraliaThe British laid elaborate plans to defend Fremantle even before Stirling arrived in 1829. His advance-guard, led by Captain Charles Fremantle, made perhaps the earliest of preparations. By the end of the first year, a fort had been erected on what is now Pakenham Street. More followed. From its earliest colonial days, Fremantle has played an integral role in the military defence of Western Australia. Using the tools of both archaeology and history, Dr Shane Burke will introduce guests to key defence installations in Fremantle and nearby coastal suburbs — some of which are now forgotten — including colonial forts, coastal lookouts and World War II gun emplacements.

screening History: War on the big screenMichael McCall, The University of Notre Dame AustraliaFilm has been part of the cultural experience in Fremantle since the first moving pictures were screened at the Town Hall in 1896. Since then — and arguably more than any other genre — the ‘war film’ has helped shape perceptions of Australian identity. Classic films come immediately to mind, including Peter Weir’s Gallipoli (1981), Bruce Beresford’s Breaker Morant (1980) and Charles Chauvel’s Forty Thousand Horsemen (1940). Such Australian war films as these have sometimes confronted audiences and magnified the trauma of conflict; on other occasions, they have made their mark upon our imaginations, mythologising Anzac stories of mateship and sacrifice. During this centenary of the Gallipoli campaign, we welcome film maker, Michael McCall, to our Heritage Festival program to consider the significance of war films for Fremantle cinema-goers as they would have experienced them in the past century.

the Architecture of remembrance: Fremantle memorialsProfessor John Stephens, Curtin University Some commentators have described Australians’ fascination with remembrance as a ‘commemorative frenzy’. Faced with the Great War centenary, preparations have been under way around the country (and around the world) to build new and repair established memorials. Like other major cities in Australia, Fremantle has its own memorials, the most iconic of which is that which soars above the town on Monument Hill. Looking to the horizon to where troops departed and returned, when opened in 1928, it was intended to be the most significant of its kind in the State – indeed, in the nation. But it is far from the only architectural example of remembrance in Fremantle. Professor John Stephens, Professor of Architecture and Culture at Curtin University, will discuss the architecture and design of remembrance and forgetting.

Dissenters: security and upheavalDr Daniel Baldino, The University of Notre Dame AustraliaMass strikes gripped Australia at the height of World War I. Fremantle was no exception. In a notorious showdown with police and the public, waterside workers in Fremantle refused to load supplies they believed were destined for German trenches in 1917. In retaliation, lumpers were accused of undermining the war effort. It is in this event that we find the origins of years of industrial, political and social unrest in Fremantle, particularly after strike-breakers were recruited by government to intervene on the waterfront. Yet the Fremantle lumpers’ strikes of 1917 have enduring relevance, particularly in the light of tensions we face in modern Australia. In this fascinating discussion, Dr Daniel Baldino will consider how events in war-time Fremantle might shed light on such issues as patriotism, loyalty, dissent and coercion as they have since been interpreted in times of national emergency.

Canon Moore Goes to WarAssociate Professor Bill Leadbetter, St George’s Cathedral and The University of Notre Dame AustraliaCanon Robert Henry Moore was most famously known as the Anglican Dean of Perth between 1929 and 1947. Yet in the years of the Great War, he was the parish priest at Fremantle’s St John’s Church. Clergy were not shy in the war years of intervening in public debate regarding loyalty, service and patriotism. In many cases, their involvement had profound outcomes, as was most evident when Melbourne’s Catholic Archbishop, Daniel Mannix, lobbied against the conscription referendum of 1917. Moore, however, as did many of the Anglican clergy, preached that the Great War was a just fight in the defence of Christian values. In the following year, at the height of a bitter conscription campaign, he became a military chaplain and served with the Third Light Horse Brigade in the Middle East. Join Associate Professor Bill Leadbetter as he shares stories of Canon Moore’s war.

Join your favourite presenters as they guide you through the forgotten stories of Fremantle and its history of war. Retrace the steps of the Boer War’s Breaker Morant in Cliff Street; join with us in remembering High Street’s welcome home parades of the Great War; and discover the sites of lost forts. Other locations will include a monument to the frontier wars, a World War II air raid shelter and other legacies of Fremantle’s history of war. Fremantle’s Fallen, 1914-1918Over 3000 men and women from the greater Fremantle area served in World War One. By the war’s end, 849 of them were dead – a great loss for a small and close knit community.

Local historian Andrew Pittaway, who has worked tirelessly to find and collate the stories of each of these men, will share some of their stories. Madison Lloyd-Jones, local historian and ANZAC Centenary Officer for the City of Fremantle, will discuss some of the 849-focused projects that have been undertaken by the City during the centenary period and share some of the moving stories that have come forward from relatives of the fallen. The Fremantle History Society will be providing afternoon tea following the talk for a gold coin donation so stick around for a chat and a nibble!

Fortress Fremantle, Arthur HeadThis is an interpretive walking tour of the area where there were two 6” guns protecting the harbour. The stories our guides tell are almost unbelievable but nonetheless true. They cover all the wars up until 1950 and tell of the submarine fleets stationed at Fremantle – they at one time stood alone against the Japanese. Fremantle was a major port where our Diggers departed for Gallipoli and the killing fields of Europe.

Footprints in the sandWe are doing our popular interpretive walking tour of the early settlers who landed on our beaches and left their footprints in the sand. There are great tales regarding those settlers and our policemen and of their struggles against the elements and the indigenous population. DocklandsTravel back in time with our interpretive guide to when Fremantle was not the modern port that it is today. Shipwrecks, deplorable conditions and general hardship made survival very difficult. There was the arrival of convicts, at our request, to help ease the shortage of manpower. On this walk you will learn of the men that were sent here and of their trials and tribulations. Docklands is a walk along Bathers Beach and a history lesson that you won’t soon forget.

The Fremantle Bowling Club was established on 1 November 1896 on the site of the present tennis clubs. Fremantle takes shape: 1829 - 1837Join keen historian, Dr Steve Errington, to see how the development of the Town of Fremantle can be traced from a splendid collection of maps, sketches and watercolour paintings. We have Surveyor-General John Septimus Roe’s original pencil sketch from 1829 showing Cliff and High Streets as well as formal town plans which show Kings Square moving about, and a series of paintings showing how a straggling village emerged, split in two by swamps. These culminate in Charles Wittenoom’s beautiful topographical watercolour of the West End, captured in 1837 from near the Round House.

WooDLoEs visitThe late-Victorian Woodloes Homestead is the oldest remaining building in Cannington, one of the earliest areas settled in the new Swan River Colony. Woodloes folk museum was the base of the pioneer Mason and Bird Timber Company which contracted the wood for the Fremantle Bridge framework, the causeway, the she-oak shingles for the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum and the roof of the Perth Town Hall, for starters. Banking on our floraFor 20 years Anne Cochrane has managed the state’s seed bank which conserves precious seed from our rare and threatened flora. Anne will explain how and by whom the seed is collected, and what the bank does with it all. She’ll describe the threats to WA’s unique flora, conservation techniques, research and recovery work. She will also outline Western Australia’s involvement in national and international seed banking partnerships and the global strategy for plant conservation.

Walk in the shoes of ConvictsEnjoy the rich folklore and stories of our port city’s convict history as one of Fremantle Prison’s experienced guides takes you for a walk in the shoes of the convicts. Envisage the experience of disembarking at South Jetty, Bathers Bay in 1850, to arriving at the Convict Establishment to serve your time.

Fanny samson Cottage MuseumDuring the festival we are offering two opportunities, following a short presentation, to visit this private museum housed in a building from 1830. The Cottage Museum contains artifacts from the oldest mainland Australian family-owned company still operating today. The business premises next door, dating back to the gold rush days of 1898, are built above the cellar of the previous building, destroyed by fire in 1895.

Please wear sensible shoes and be prepared to navigate a number of stairs. No parking is available on site.

sailors Guide to FremantleAs a sailor arriving in Fremantle in the early years, what was life like? Pioneering settlers, Dutch explorers, whalers, migrants, convicts, naval seamen, gold seekers and many other groups of people have arrived in Western Australia via Fremantle over the centuries. This tour captures their stories and perspectives on the land and the challenges they faced here.

En route, enjoy a quiet beer or two (included) while visiting some of Fremantle’s working-man’s clubs. The tour begins at the Round House, WA’s oldest building and concludes at the original convict lock-up on the Esplanade.

WWII time Window toursVisitors are invited to borrow iPads from Fremantle Art Centre’s reception and take a free augmented reality tour that shows them how the FAC site would have looked when the American Navy Submarine Fleet used the Lunatic Asylum as a depot during WWII. The tour creates a window back in time where American sailors, colourful locals and the building itself literally come to life before your eyes. At specific nodes around the building, the Time Window app (which visitors can download onto their own iPads for free at home or borrow one of FAC’s), will bring these scenes to life. Beasts of Battle: Animals in WWIAn artists’ showcase by Karen Jackson of Wolf Takes Fox Studio and Wild Twig Studios. An iconic image in Australia’s ANZAC mythology is Simpson and his donkey, Duffy. Simpson's Donkey is probably the most famous of the many horses, mules and donkeys used for transporting supplied and wounded men. Of course, there were may other types of animals and birds used during that conflict.

Inspired by the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, Karen Jackson’s art will acknowledge some of the roles played by the different animals during WWI. With both words and pictures, this project will look at how both sides ‘depended on the efforts and skills of animals for transport, logistics, communications and, at times, solace.’ (Matthew Shaw, Animals and War, British Library)

Médée presented by Lost & Found and Fremantle Arts CentreLost & Found is a new opera company with a mission to rediscover lost operas and present them in found spaces that speak to the resonance of the work. In their newest production, Lost & Found has partnered with Fremantle Arts Centre to present Darius Milhaud’s opera Médée. Taken from the final sections of the ancient Greek tragedy, Medea, Médée explores a woman’s psychological state as it shifts from the contemplation of marital infidelity to exacting revenge and, in a chilling climax to the slowly wrought catharsis, the murder of her two children.

FAC’s history, first as a lunatic asylum and later as a women’s home makes it an apt staging point. Performed in a room that contains one of the asylum’s original cells, with a limited capacity of fifty people, this promises to be an intimate and haunting production.

Forgotten Heroes of World War oneA program of songs, instrumental music, poetry and art by composers and poets who served in the First World War will be the feature of Forgotten Heroes of WWI. The concert is a tribute to everyone affected by this great and terrible war – on the front, at home and on all sides. Very few Australians found themselves untouched by the war and many have stories of relatives who served and some who served and never returned. Organised by renowned pianist Jennifer Warren, this concert was inspired by her uncle who died a hero in WWI and was awarded a Victoria Cross medal for his efforts. In Gallipolli he tended the wounded, even carrying them himself when there weren’t enough stretcher bearers. Sadly, he died in the 3rd Battle of Gaza and was buried in Beersheba and has since been referred to as “a forgotten hero of military medicine”. Come and commemorate these men and their stories through music and more.

knutsford Precinct open Day WeekendPresented by a collective of local small businesses in the up and coming Knutsford Precinct, the Open Day Weekend will showcase several businesses in the area from the multi-purpose community space Fremantle Fibonacci Centre, Shed Walla, Fremantle Timber Traders, Blinco Street Café, CrossFit Avada Gym and other businesses in the area. Activities will include in-house family activities, music and market stalls, tying present day businesses with historical information about the buildings in which they dwell.

Bathers Beach Art Precinct open DayMeet the artists, take part in a workshop or two and discover the creative work and remarkable talent that fills the Bathers Beach Art Precinct here in Fremantle. Oh, and stay for the Captains Lane Summerfest Finale (see details on page 30).

Open from 10.00am – 5.30pm are the J Shed Studios (including Greg James in unit 2 and Jenny Dawson and Peter Zuvela in unit 3) where you can view ‘historic wharf architecture’ and the internal structures of this shed built in 1912. Also occupying the J Shed Studios are DADAA and Fremantle Fine Furniture, both open for today.

Atop the cliffs above the J Shed, you will discover Worlds End Studio nestled in next to the Heritage Guides who tend to the Round House. Close by, Ann Land’s paintings and etchings will be on display from 11am – 7pm, with tours of her studio available; see page 24 for more details.

Right around the corner you will find the Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre which will also be open from 12noon – 5.00pm; see page 17 for more.

The historic pilots’ cottages along Captains Lane which house an eclectic array of artist studios including David Giles’ Studio 11, Wild Twig Studios and Glen Cowan’s Underwater Photography Studio will be open. Out the front, you will be able to delight in creating your own heritage photos, with an olde worlde Photo Booth. See pages 25-26 for more details on all of these events.

Past the historical tales and goings-on at the Round House, and over the grassy knoll, you will discover the jewel by the sea, Kidogo Arthouse..
