OUR CHALLENGE…• In order to maintain our standard of living, NZ will need

to ‘earn’ more (through exports)• However, of all OECD nations, NZ: – has the smallest ‘domestic’ market– is furthest away from its export markets

• This ‘distance from market’ is a penalty on NZ equal to about 10% of GDP (OECD, 2008)

• As a nation, we therefore cannot afford to be less than super efficient in our transport logistics

• Network providers and operators must excel in our efforts to improve the efficiency of freight (and in particular, product to market)

• Can some form of regional planning be the answer?

Starting at the demand side

• No national NZ transport strategy or national transport plan or comprehensive inter-regional corridor plans

• Some regional strategies and plans e.g. Auckland

• Instruction in GPS to undertake ‘integrated planning’
