town Saratoga Springs. This

year’s theme for the family-oriented cele-bration is “Art

Unleashed.”The event kicks

off with an opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. “It looks like we’ll have some good weather again this year,” said First Night Coordinator Jackie Marchand of Saratoga Arts. About 14,000 people are expected to attend, making this event the largest

New Year’s Eve celebration in the state outside of Times Square.

Admission is just $15, which provides attendees with a but-ton that allows access to all 35 venues and 70 performances. Buttons can be purchased at the Saratoga Arts Center, Stewart’s Shops, Adirondack Trust branches, and Price Choppers across the region. They can also be purchased online at www.saratoga-arts.org. Children under five are admitted free.

New this year is North America’s premiere Celtic event, “The Tartan Terrors.” Another new offering is the retro-techno “Hands-Off Arcade.” “We worked with some of the top gaming tech-nology experts at RPI on this,” said Marchand. The professors have taken four vintage video games, and used current technol-ogy that will allow people to play the games with their entire body. “It’s going to be a blast,” she com-mented.

Many local favorites are return-ing to perform this year, includ-ing the Rambling Jug Stompers, Hair of the Dog, the Ernie Williams Band, Black Mountain Symphony, Harold Ford and the Cash Band, the Zucchini Brothers, the all-woman Celtic group Triskele, Fairview Mountain, Professor Louie and the Crowmatix, and many more. “We have tons of music,” said Marchand.

The evening will also offer dance with the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company, comedy, magic, karaoke and even improv, with the Mop and Bucket Improv group. Most of the entertain-ment takes place indoors.

The 14th annual First Night Saratoga 5K Run, which starts at Skidmore College at 5:30 p.m., is already sold out with 1,500 runners signed up, said Marchand.

Shops and restaurants around the city will be open late to accommodate the revelers. The Capital District Transporation Authority (CDTA) will be run-ning free shuttles around the city until 1 a.m. A First Night button will be needed to ride the buses.

After a full evening of enter-tainment, there will be a giant fireworks display at midnight in Congress Park.

SARATOGA Learn how to build the fastest Pinewood Derby Car at the Saratoga Auto Museum at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7. This special workshop for area Cub Scouts will focus on the science involved in build-ing a winning Pinewood Derby

Car. The workshop will include Tech Talk (the physics of speed), Speed shop, and

Track Time. Each registra-

tion includes a Pinewood Derby car kit with regulation axles and wheels, which will be assembled during the Speed Shop segment. Once the cars are completed, a weigh-in will take place, followed by a series of heat races on the museum’s Pinewood Derby Track.

Pre-registration is required for this workshop. Cost is $10, which includes the car kit and museum admission for a scout and an adult. Registration will be limited to 40 entrants.

CAMBRIDGE After a very successful first year, Cambridge

Connects is once again inviting

the community to its second annual Winter Outdoor party

and Christmas Tree Bonfire, to

be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Robert Durrin Memorial Park.

“It was wonderful last year,” said Heather Sweet of Cambridge Connects. “Attendance was very good.” Many people brought their trees directly to the park to add to the bonfire, she noted. This year’s event has a change of venue, since the park used last year is now the site of a skate park, she said.

There was plenty of snow for last year’s event, so the village created a big snow pile for chil-dren to play on. Sweet is hoping that there will be enough snow this year to re-create the snow pile and organize snow games for the kids.

“We’re excited to be able to offer it again this year,” she commented. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served through-out the event.

Village residents wishing to donate their trees to the bonfire simply need to leave them at the curb for pick up. Those who reside outside the village can bring their tree to the park to be added to the bonfire.

“It’s lots of fun,” said Sweet.Cambridge Connects is a vol-

unteer organization that is sponsored by the Village of Cambridge. Sweet noted that the organization has taken over many events that had previous-ly be run by the former Youth Commission. “We try to do as many free or low-cost events as possible,” she said. “The vil-lage has been great in helping us.”

The eight-week term, taught Mondays at 5:30 p.m., is an introductory course in playing with a combined ensemble of string and woodwind players. Students will have exposure to various musical styles and genres in this course, but they should have a basic understand-ing of music notation and instrumental technique.

Want to learn to play by ear? You can learn to play jigs, reels and waltzes by ear in the Instrumental Tune Jam, led by Bliss McIntosh. Students will participate in the gratifying process of learning traditional tunes and sharing a common body of music with a group. The course begins on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. Cost of the eight-week term is $35 general public and $30 for members.

Instructor Sylvia Bloom has a B.M. in voice from Oberlin Conservatory, and is a recent member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus. She is also the mother of a four year old son.

The ten-week session begins Saturday, Jan. 21. Pre-registration is required by Jan. 13. Cost is $159 for the public and $149 for members, and includes the class booklet, CDs and a DVD. A discounted rate is available for siblings.

Learn how to listen to classi-cal music in “Listening Club with Lila Brown” at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. The director of Music from Salem, Lila Brown will take you on a journey through a world of bagatelles and miniatures by Beethoven, Dvorak, Webern, Kurtag and Schumann, using live and recorded examples.
