Q: I know this is the final seasonfor "The Oprah Winfrey Show," butcan you tell me when her final showwill air? -- Annie L., via e-mailA: Oprah's Harpo Productions, whichproduces "Oprah," confirmed that thefinal original episode of "The OprahWinfrey Show" will air May 25.Oprah tweeted last month that she was"hard at work planning the finalshows" of TV's top-rated talk show formore than 20 years. Check your locallistings for time and station -- I have afeeling the entire month will bepacked with stuff you won't want tomiss!
***Q: The other day I stumbled
across a show on MTV called "TheHard Times of RJ Berger" -- I ab-solutely loved it! The actress whoplays RJ's mom looks very familiar. Can you tell me about her? -- StanR., Nashville, Tenn.A: Actress/comedian Beth Littlefordportrays Suzanne Berger, RJ's uncon-ventional (and always entertaining)mom in the MTV scripted comedy --the first-ever sitcom on MTV. Youmight remember Beth from her fouryears on Comedy Central's "The DailyShow." I chatted with Beth recently, and she told me how excited she isabout season two."This season goes really deep. It
continues to push the envelope on a lotof levels, but there is also a lot of re-ally hard, squeezing angst," she said."No one is who they appear to be, andlife is more complicated. My charactercontinues to be a little bit cartoonish,
but then goes deep. You see the loveand you see the heartbreak. And be-cause the parents are regular charac-ters this season, I get some juicierstory lines."You can catch Beth this summer in
the Steve Carell comedy "Crazy Stu-pid Love," as well as part of the super-mega-all-star cast of "Movie 43."
***Q: I heard that because of con-
tract negotiations, "Mad Men"won't be back for a fifth season. Please tell me this isn't true! --Heather F., via e-mailA: Don't fret. The show is getting a
late start because of contract-negotia-tion specifics with "Mad Men" creatorMatthew Weiner, but it will return forits fifth season in early 2012.

Blue, channel cats are cavity nesters
Every year between the last week of Mayand the end of June, catfish anglers from otherstates come to Truman Lake to cash in on analbeit brief bonanza that most local anglersknow nothing about.
This is a good thing for the operators ofmotels, restaurants, tackle shops and marinas inWarsaw, Clinton and Osceola, of course, butsomehow it doesn’t seem quite right that “for-eigners” are carting home ice chests full of“our” catfish filets. Hopefully, this column willhelp our side catch up.
The secret to catfish angling so easy some-one from (insert your least favorite state) coulddo it is the fact that both blue and channel cat-fish are cavity nesters.
This means that, instead of fanning out bedson the lake bottom like most fish do, catfishseek out natural cavities like hollow logs, pro-tected nooks beneath log jams, muskrat andbeaver tunnels and caves and crevices betweenlarge rocks.
With a single exception, all of those possiblespawning sites are nearly impossible to find, letalone to fish. This exception is, of course, rockcrevices.
Rock falls at the base of bluffs provide cat-fish with a few good spawning sites, but it’s theriprap that lines Truman’s dam, bridge abut-ments and causeways that offers hundreds, ifnot thousands, of spawning crevices in a rela-tively small area.
I’ve never thought there was anything inher-ently wrong with the fact that doing somethingwas easy.
Locating riprap, which, by its nature, extends well above the waterline, is so absurdlyeasy that anyone who can’t do it might want toconsider taking up golf.
Mastering the fine art of riprap catfishangling is a little more complex, and it helps tounderstand what’s going on beneath the surface.
First, a male catfish finds and cleans out acrevice that’s not only defensible but that alsohas the proper eye appeal to attract the fancy ofone of the female catfish swimming past.
Sooner of later (probably sooner) a femalewill deposit all of her roe — it looks like a massof golden-yellow tapioca — in the bottom ofthe crevice and promptly swim off for partsunknown.
The male stands guard over the nest until theeggs hatch about a week later and for anotherweek after that until the fry leave the nest.
This behavior pattern is not well suited forthe let-the-bait-soak tactics most catfisheranglers use most of the time.
With a few modifications, it’s a perfectmatch for the pitching and casting techniquesso beloved by bass anglers.
The first of those modifications is to lightenup.
Many bass and most muskie anglers would
nod in approval at the heavy-action rods, 65-pound test running line and 30-pound test fluo-rocarbon leaders I generally use when goingafter catfish.
These same fellow fishermen would rolltheir eyes if they saw the medium-action spin-ning outfit spooled with 12-pound test monofil-ament I choose when I’m fishing riprap, butthere are methods to my madness.
The best method I’ve found or heard of fortempting catfish spawning in riprap is to slowlyswim a jig tipped with a night crawler or leechdown or parallel to the riprap’s slope.
The jig must stay within inches of the top ofthe rocks to be perceived as either a threat or ameal to the catfish, but — assuming you’re notpassionate about spending most of your fishingtime tying on new jigs — the jig can’t dip downinto the rocks.
With a little practice, a 1/16-ounce jig iseasy to keep above the rocks. Selecting a jigpoured around a No. 2 hook allows for surerhook sets.
Don’t worry, despite its small diameter, a jighook will keep you attached to a trophy catfishif you do your part.
Depending on turbidity, catfish prefer tospawn anywhere from 18 inches to 18 feetbeneath the surface, a fact which makes steeplysloping riprap banks even more attractive.
Since a catfish will bolt for deep water assoon as it feels a hook, fish the maximum depthyou expect to find spawning fish first by castingparallel to the bank and allowing the jig to sinkbefore beginning the retrieve.
Keep working up the slope until it becomesobvious the water you’re swimming your jigthrough is too shallow to hold fish.
There will be times when spawning catfishhave to be tormented into striking.
That’s when I switch to a slip float I can setto suspend my bait a few inches above the topof the rocks.
I usually use the same jig and live-baittrailer combinations I use without the float, butother hook styles and baits are worth trying aswell.
As should be obvious, slip float rigs must becast parallel to the bank so the depth of thewater will remain constant throughout theretrieve. Adjust the float as necessary wheneverthe depth changes.
Catching catfish in the riprap is an experi-ence no diehard whisker fish addict shouldmiss.

Increasing Graduation RatesThrough Technology
(NAPS)—Researchers may have good news for students, teachers, parents and anyone who cares about education in America. It’s beenfound that students in so-called “blended learning” environments withaccess to computer-assisted instruction and technology-integratedlearning systems fare better than those in traditional classrooms.Fortunately, it’s a move many colleges can easily and affordably make.
That’s just as well, considering that although a higher-educationdegree is needed more than ever, college dropout rates are approaching50 percent.
What The Colleges Can DoColorado State University recognizes that the growing demand for
business education has intensified the need for upgraded technology. Itsclassrooms are laid out toencourage discussion and dia-logue between students andfaculty, and are supported bytechnology that enables seam-less connectivity around theworld.
The school’s leading dis-tance MBA program servesstudents all over the globe anddemands flexible technologysolutions for faculty to interactwith students.
“Some faculty have foundinnovative ways to use theirHP tablets to grade studenthomework papers, then resub-mit the documents back to students electronically,” said Jon Schroth,CSU College of Business, director of Information Technology.
Dr. Dave Berque at DePauw University found that in many classes, the content is hard to express with a keyboard—chemistry, for instance,or graphs or Japanese characters. His students use HP tablet PCs to takenotes, solve problems and share solutions. The school currently offersthe multitouch HP EliteBook 2740p Tablet PC.
By implementing tablets into the daily curriculum, DePauwUniversity saw failure rates in many classes drop. In an introductorycomputer science class, for example, failure rates dropped from 14 to 1percent. The university isn’t alone in its findings, as schools all over thecountry are truly seeing the benefits of tablet use in the classroom.
A school can maximize technology in the classroom several ways:•Poll students in real time on tablets during lectures to ensure that
they’re paying attention and understanding the lesson.•Use tablets in courses that require characters and graphics that are
hard to express with a keyboard.•Grade student papers electronically so they can view corrections in
real time.• Swivel the screen to lie flat to write notes and for easier group col-
laboration.Contact your advertising representative if you would like to have
your business featured in this space.
The benefits of blended learning aredemonstrated by colleges and universi-ties that are seeing higher graduationrates and students better prepared forsuccess.
Education TipsSalvation Army setsfundraising auction
By Dennis RichThe Sedalia Democrat
Balloon and airplane rides areamong the items open to bidders onThursday during the Sedalia Salva-tion Army’s annual fundraisingauction. The event, slated to begin at 5:30
p.m. at the Corps Community Cen-ter, 1200 E. Broadway Blvd., willhelp raise money for the SalvationArmy’s social service programs, said the group’s office manager,Dee Wade.“We are going to auction off
some things and try and raise a lit-tle money and use it for things herein Sedalia. All the money will stayhere local,” Wade said.Cynthia Hopper, the Salvation
Army’s social work director, saidthe continued effects of the eco-nomic downturn have seen demandfor services rise as donations de-cline, so the auction will “help usoffset some of those costs.”“Times are tough for everybody.
Donations are down because peo-ple are holding things back, so ourfood program and our social serv-ice department just need a littleextra assistance,” Hopper said. She said demand for services, in-
cluding rental and utility assistanceand the group’s food pantry, “havedoubled since last year.”“It had definitely gotten worse.
People are feeling the pinch from
the gas crisis and the economy. This has already been a tough yearfor a lot of families. I think every-body is tightening their belts,”Hopper said. The packages, donated by sup-
porters and businesses, include ahot air balloon ride, a plane rideover the Lake of the Ozarks, St.Louis Cardinals baseball ticketsand antiques.Hopper said the group is still ac-
cepting item donations for the auc-tion.“Anything people can give is ap-
preciated. They don’t have to bebig ticket items. They can be justwhite elephant items as long asthey are nice. Also businesses, ifthey want to donate gift certifi-cates, those are always popular,”Hopper said.
