Page 8: Freeland Walleye Festival Guide 2013

Long before the white man came to this valley, the Indians camped on the banks of the “The Water that Follows the Bay.” In their language it was known as the Tittabawassee River. French fur traders carried back to Detroit and the rest of the new country stories of a rich valley with a dense growth of hardwoods on flatland along a beautiful river. To many who heard these tales, it meant rich farm land and opportunity.

At the signing on the Treaty of 1819, with General Cass and mostly Chippewa Chiefs in attendance, the Indians turned over to the white man a tremendous por-tion of Eastern Michigan. All this activity sparked the interest of many speculators from New York City to Michigan, so from 1832 to 1836 hundreds of acres of land were sold in the Saginaw Valley. Because the river was a natural route for travel and drainage, land along the Tittabawas-see was bought. Saginaw was already a

thriving trading post in 1841 and on April 5th of that year the first organized township of the county was formed — the Tittabawassee Township.

Among the early pioneers were the Allens, the Bishops, the Lewises, the Roesers, the Mungers and many others.

About this same time, the woods along the banks of the head waters of the Tittaba-wassee River began to ring with the music of the lumber-jacks and the cry of “Timber-r-r-r.” This announced the opening of the great white pine era which made the name of Michigan familiar throughout the world. Much of Chicago was rebuilt from the pine which floated down the Tittabawassee past Freeland. Old tim-ers tell us that in the spring, one could walk the Saginaw and Tittaba-wassee Rivers from Saginaw to Smith’s Crossing on the logs that filled the river from bank to bank.

On the corner of M-47 and Pierce Road, the settlement of Loretta boasted a post office called “Jay,” a blacksmith shop, store, a hotel and three homes. Mail, merchandise and passengers were unloaded from boats, which were the main means of transportation. There was also a stagecoach and one could always ride a wagon over the trail that fol-lowed the river to Saginaw.

As a result of a political maneuver, the post office was moved to Roeser’s store. A hotel was built on the southwest corner of M-47 and Washington and was operated by Garrett and Elizabeth “Mammy” Freeland. The fine floors of Mammy’s hotel were soon worn rough with the hobnailed boots ofthe lumberjacks, as it became a stopping place for them. Although the place contained a small sawmill and a shingle mill, it was not a lum-bering town of any consequence. The soil was fertile and farmers were attracted to the region.

Crossing the river was done by straddling logs and paddling them across. As more and more people began taking up residence along the river, a stagecoach was put into service. It ran between the forks in Midland to Saginaw. The fare was one dollar per person for the day long trip. In 1859, the steamer Belle Seymour was put into service. It was used to carry passengers and supplies between Midland and Sagi-naw. The railroad came through in 1869 and the Belle Seymour ceased to run the river. The first bridge across the Tittabawassee at Freeland Road was made of wood and built in 1870.

The first school in Freeland, the King School, was built in 1854 on land donated by Noble King. The first teacher in that school was Jacob Lewis. In 1872 a two-story school building was constructed on Church Street where the Fire Station now stands.
