headquarters — but also have invoked theshow’s theme of inclusiveness by makinga sizable donation to The Trevor Projectthat Freeform parent company Disneymatched.

The “Shadowhunters” finale is sizable it-self, since Freeform gives the last episodea two-and-a-half-hour slot Monday, May6. Adapted from Cassandra Clare’s “TheMortal Instruments” book series, the sagahas followed the journey of numerouscharacters ... but principally that of ClaryFray, a young woman whose life was up-ended by her discovery that she is a Shad-owhunter, a demon-battling combinationof human and angel.

Katherine McNamara, who has playedClary for the three seasons of the GLAADAward-winning show, expresses her ap-preciation of “people out in the world whoare as invested in it as I am in creating it.It’s really amazing, and it’s been thebiggest blessing with this series, especiallywith it coming from book material that Iknow is important to so many people.”

McNamara concurs that the success of“Shadowhunters” can be linked largely toits representation of so many lives andlifestyles. “That’s a really big part of why

‘Shadowhunters’ bids farewellwith a supersized finale

By Jay Bobbin“Shadowhunters” is ending, but many

of its fans don’t want to let it go.Since Freeform announced the fan-

tasy-adventure’s cancellation, devoteesnot only have lobbied for its continua-tion — via a SaveShadowhunters social-media campaign, plus billboards and abanner flown over Netflix’s Los Angeles

fantasy series are so popular,” she reasons.“Even if the characters aren’t human, they’re going through very human strug-gles, and it allows viewers to look at theirown experiences objectively.

“ ‘Shadowhunters’ is such a diverseshow,” adds McNamara, “and I’ve seen itin the fandom. They’ve created this beau-tiful space for anyone to feel loved and ac-cepted and seen. And it’s only fitting, because that’s ultimately what the messageof the show is: No matter what you’remade of, or what blood runs through yourveins, you can be a hero.”

McNamara actually has had roles in mul-tiple fantasy franchises. Besides “Shad-owhunters,” she appeared in the two“Maze Runner” movie sequels, and shealso has been playing Mia Smoak (aliasBlackstar) — Oliver Queen and FelicitySmoak’s daughter from the future — onThe CW’s “Arrow.”

While McNamara allows that she’s “sad”to see “Shadowhunters” conclude, shenotes, “The fact that we were able to endit in a way that we honored the show, andhonored the fandom and everything thatwe’ve been building for so long, wasamazing. Every person in every depart-ment has been committed to making thebest show possible, and we’ve had thechance to give it one last hurrah. I think thefinale is so wonderful and so rich, I can’twait for people to see it.”

a certain someone else win in his category. The “Bachelor” franchise staple is, for

the second consecutive year, a contenderfor outstanding game show host — for thesyndicated “Who Wants to Be a Million-aire” — in the 46th annual event, to bestreamed live on the website of the Na-tional Academy of Television Arts & Sci-ences (emmyonline.tv) pluswww.KNEKT.tv, Facebook, Twitter andYouTube from the Pasadena (Calif.) CivicAuditorium on Sunday, May 5. MarioLopez (“Extra”) and Sheryl Underwood(“The Talk”) again serve as hosts.

“If the first (nomination) was ‘lucky,’maybe the second one’s not a fluke,”muses the genial Harrison, now four yearsinto his run as the weekday “Millionaire”successor to Meredith Vieira, Cedric theEntertainer and Terry Crews. (RegisPhilbin only hosted the primetime ABCversion.) The program itself is up for theDaytime Emmy for outstanding gameshow.

“It used to be that people would come upto me and it would be about ‘The Bache-lor,’ clearly,” Harrison confirms. “Butnow, more and more I hear, ‘I watch ”Mil-lionaire“ every day.’ And I love hearingthat I personally have broken through as

‘that guy,’ and that people are either find-ing the show for the first time or findingit again. It hadn’t been nominated for anEmmy in a long time, and we’ve broughtit back to where it is.”

Still, Harrison is very mindful this yearof a rival for the host award. “Last year,”he recalls, “there was Wayne Brady(‘Let’s Make a Deal’) and Alex Trebek(‘Jeopardy!’) and Pat Sajak (‘Wheel ofFortune’), and those guys are back in thisyear. (Also nominated is John MichaelHiggins of GSN’s ‘America Says.’) Andobviously, we’ve heard the sad news ofwhat Alex is fighting, stage 4 pancreaticcancer.

“I had the unbelievable honor of meet-ing him last year (at the DaytimeEmmys),” Harrison notes. “He sat infront of me, and I made it a point to in-troduce myself and talk to him, becausehe’s a legend. I’m a student of the game, and I’ve watched Alex for decades, alongwith everybody else. He’s as good as itgets, and when I heard the (medical)news, I was gutted. I can’t imagine thatshow without him and his snarkiness, hisbrilliance, his sense of humor ... all of it.

“I’m wishing him well and praying forhim, and if anybody but Alex Trebek isnamed (as the game-show-host winner)that night — and if he is, if anybody buthim gets up on that stage — I will tear thebuilding apart.”

SPRINGTIME HAS ARRIVEDThe days are getting longer. The birds are chirping. The

trees are blooming. We just experienced Easter Sunday. These are all welcome signs that Spring has finally arrived.Although some of the recent days have been cool and windy, officially, winter has left us.

This is always a special time of year. Our Recreation Divi-sion’s programs start to kick into high gear. Our parks be-come hubs of activity with Bayonne residents of all agesenjoying the many amenities we work so hard to offer. Weare fortunate to have more than two dozen parks in our com-munity, from Mayor Denis P. Collins Park by the Kill VanKull to Mayor Richard A. Rutkowski Park at the northern endof Bayonne.

Since becoming mayor, I have been especially proud of theefforts of our Recreation Division to provide programmingthat caters to every part of Bayonne’s population. I hope witha new season upon us you will take advantage of all that wehave to offer. I encourage you to visit our Recreation websiteto find something that suits your interests. Spring activitiesinclude Buddy Baseball, the Kids Travel Club, the AdultTravel Club, Chess, Senior Women’s Softball, Men’s Outdoor

Basketball, T-Ball Squirts, and SoccerSquirts. Women’s softball season started onApril 23. Men’s outdoor basketball seasonwill begin on May 28. T-Ball Squirts andSoccer Squirts will both start on April 16. Formore details, please visit the Recreation Di-vision website at www.bayonnerec.com.

Buddy Baseball will start its fifth season onSaturday, May 4. Opening day will begin with a kick-offbreakfast, followed by a parade, opening ceremonies, andthen the games. Buddy Baseball will include 112 children.

This past weekend, we had an Earth Day clean-up in Bay-onne. In case you missed it, it’s never too late to start cleaningup around your neighborhood. Now that the snow and ice ofwinter are gone (we hope), it is a great time to clean uparound Bayonne’s homes and businesses. During the winter, some litter may have accumulated around your property. Itwould take just a few minutes of work to remove and disposeof that litter. Please do this for an elderly or handicappedneighbor, relative, or friend. Every week, potential new res-idents and investors come to Bayonne. Let’s help attract themby keeping our community clean.

Hour” while they were married, and “TheSonny and Cher Show” after their di-vorce. In-between those, Cher starred inthe simply titled “Cher” (which was forCBS, as were the other two shows).Meanwhile, Sonny moved over to ABCduring the same period for the short-lived“Sonny Comedy Revue.” Though it faredwell, Cher let “Cher” go after roughly oneyear, saying then that headlining a weeklyseries on her own was “more than I couldhandle.”Q: Is Cote de Pablo returning to “NCIS”?— Kathy Geitz, Belleville, Ill.A: As of this writing, that’s still uncertain— though with the CBS series’ recent in-voking of her character Ziva David again,it’s been pointed out by some that it wouldbe odd to reference her just casually at thispoint (and more than once) without theshow’s makers having a longer game inmind. With “NCIS” already renewed for a 17thseason, there will be time to make goodon that supposed promise. De Pablo hasbeen acting in other projects — most re-cently, a movie called “Seneca” — andshe apparently doesn’t have any long-term performing commitments. There-fore, as we often say here, never say“never” ... especially since the actress her-self has noted, “As long as a characterdoesn’t die, the character can alwayscome back.”Q: Why is Luke Perry’s name still in the

credits for “Riverdale”? — Matt Hayes, via e-mailA: The producers are doing that as a con-scious, ongoing tribute to The CW series’late co-star. They have said that for aslong as the show runs, whatever the fateof his character Fred Andrews (which hadnot been revealed when this column waswritten), Perry will continue to receive anon-air credit as a “Riverdale” cast mem-ber.Q: Michael Strahan has a lot of time onABC now, between “Good MorningAmerica” and “Strahan & Sara.” Will hestill keep hosting “The $100,000 Pyra-mid,” too? — Jean Forrest, Providence,R.I.A: He will, confirmed by the fact that hestill will be in that role when the game-show revival starts its fourth season onthat network June 9. Strahan has a vestedinterest in continuing that job, since he’salso an executive producer of the contest.Q: Will “Salvation” be back this summer?— Sue Holbrook, Reading, Pa.A: The CBS sci-fi-drama’s run came to anend with its Season 2 finale last year. However, its creator-producers will havea new gig in the coming fall season:They’ll become the new executive pro-ducers of The CW’s reboot of“Charmed,” so we wouldn’t be at all sur-prised to see some alumni of the “Salva-tion” cast turn up on that series, at least inguest roles.

Actress Marie Wilson on her journeyto a plant-based diet

Anyone considering trying a plant-based diet might want to heedthe words of Marie Wilson, a veteran actress who swore off animalproteins in her teens and hasn’t looked back.“You feel amazing,” she says. “It’s interesting how when you take

a week, you just try it for a week and then you go back, it’s amazingthe di erence you feel between the two. ... I have more energy. I havemore alertness. You just feel better and your body can process it bet-ter, too.”Wilson, who stars in “Ladies of the Lake” and its follow-up “Ladies

of the Lake: Return to Avalon,” both of which are currently streamingon Amazon, has a long history with plant-based diets, longer in factthan her acting credits, which include stints on the daytime dramas“General Hospital” (1999-2003), “Port Charles” (1999-2003), “Asthe World Turns” (2005-10) and “Days of our Lives” (2014-16), aswell as roles in the movies “Say You Will” (2017) and “To the Beat!”(2018).She originally went vegetarian at 17 because that’s what her friends

were doing and then later when she tried a hamburger, she found itdifficult to digest and painful. So out of necessity, animal fats wereout and plants were in. For good. These days, she’s a lover of salads and quinoa, which she says is

delicious and a great source of protein.“Quinoa has more protein than even meat protein,” she notes, “so

that’s been very enlightening. And also my stomach and my body ap-preciate it more because I can’t really break down meat protein. ...So I’ve just been using quinoa with a lot of dishes and salads, and in-stead of rice you do a quinoa dish. There are so many choices, espe-cially nowadays. It’s not like we’re living in the ‘50s, where it was a

raw carrot and you’re done.”As for advice she’d give to prospective vegans or vegetarians, Wilson

is succinct.“Be open-minded,” she asserts, “because a lot of people have this

judgment on what it’s like and what the food tastes like and I thinkwhen we start judging anything in life, we kind of put limits up andit kind of cuts o great opportunities that might be available to you. SoI think just being open-minded and trying something. And there’sstuff I’ve tried and didn’t like.“You won’t love everything,” she adds, “but that’s the fun of exper-

imenting and trying new things and just seeing what happens.”
