Poppy Toss Quilt size 64" x 80"

Please read all instructions before you begin. Fabric widths are assumed to be a minimum of 42". All strips are cut from selvage to selvage unless otherwise instructed. Sew all seams using a ¼" seam allowance unless otherwise instructed. Finished sizes are approximate due to variations from shrinkage and the quilting process. Press seams gently to prevent distortion.

Overview Poppy Toss showcases 10 fabrics. The fabric numbers/descriptions listed below are as they have been used in the quilt on the cover. For reference, cut a swatch from each fabric, staple it to a piece of paper, and label it appropriately 1-10. ASSEMBLY

Note: Refer to the Quilt Layout Diagram on the last page of this pattern for placement.

1. Center unit. Trim 2 of the 1 ½" wide Fabric 2 strips to measure 28 ½" long (reserve the trimmed off pieces). Sew a strip to the top and bottom of the 28 ½" x 42 ½" Fabric 1 piece. Sew a reserved Fabric 2 'trimmed off' piece to each of the remaining 1 ½" Fabric 2 strips. Cut these strips to measure 44 ½" long then sew them to each long side of the Fabric 1 piece. The center unit measures 30 ½' x 44 ½". 2. Sew the (5) 2 ½" wide Fabric 10 strips short ends together to make one long strip. Cut (4) 44 ½" lengths. 3. A Strips. Sew a 5 ½" x 12 ½" Fabric 6 piece between two 5 ½" x 8 ½" Fabric 5 pieces. (Note: The Fabric numbers are listed on the pieced strips in the Quilt Layout Diagram.) Sew a 5 ½" Fabric 4 square to each end, then a 3 ½" x 5 ½" Fabric 3 piece to each end. Trim the pieced strip evenly at each end to measure 44 ½" long. Make 2 strips. Sew each pieced strip between (2) 2 ½" x 44 ½" Fabric 10 strips (cut in step 2) to complete 2 A strips. 4. B Strips. In the same manner, make 2 B strips by sewing Fabric 9 pieces between 2 Fabric 8 pieces. Sew a Fabric 2 piece to each end, then a Fabric 7 piece to each end. Sew each pieced strip lengthwise to a 3 ½" x 44 ½" Fabric 10 strip. 5. Side sections. Sew an A strip lengthwise to a B strip. Make 2 sections. Noting orientation, sew a section to each long side of the center unit to complete the 44 ½" x 64 ½" quilt center. 6. Sew a 10 ½" x 64 ½" Fabric 10 piece lengthwise to the top and bottom of the quilt center. 7. Using 2 ½" wide strips, sew a Fabric 4 and Fabric 8 strip lengthwise together. Press seams toward Fabric 8. Make 4 strip sets. Crosscut (64) 2 ½" wide segments. Sew 32 segments together, alternating fabrics to make a 4 ½" x 64 ½" checkered strip. Make 2 strips. Sew a strip to the top and bottom of the quilt top.

8. Sew a 4 ½" x 64 ½" Fabric 10 strip to the top and bottom to complete the 65 ½" x 80 ½" quilt top.

Appliqués 1. Iron fusible web to the wrong side of Fabric 1. Cut out the motifs in singles and in groups leaving about 1/8” of background surrounding them. Fuse according to manufacturer’s directions. Use of an applique pressing sheet may be helpful. 2. Remove the paper backing and pin the motifs to the runner. Refer to the pattern cover for placement ideas. When pleased with the arrangement, fuse in place. Edge stitch around the raw edges. By stitching on the narrow edge of background, the motifs will stand out. This could also be done in the quilting process rather than stitching the edges now.

Quilting – Suggestions only 1. Outline the poppies in the center block and in the appliqués. Stitch in the ditch on both sides of the border around the center block. 2. Outline the small poppy bouquets and the large purple tonal poppies and stitch a motif in the other blocks in the stacks. Outline the stacks of blocks. 3. Stitch diagonal lines through the checkerboards. 4. Stitch an allover design in the background.

Binding 1. Sew the (8) 2 ½" wide Fabric 2 strips diagonally together to make one long strip. Press the strip lengthwise in half wrong sides together. 2. Align the raw edge of the folded strip with the raw edge along one side of the quilt top, leaving an 8" tail. Stitch, using a ¼" seam allowance all the way around, mitering the corners and stopping 8" from the starting point. Use your favorite method to join the ends and finish binding. 3. Bring the folded edge of the binding to the back, press, and stitch it in place with a blind hemstitch.
