EDITORS BIT...
I'M BACK... I WANNA
BE A COWBOY...
I'M A COUNTRY DJ
I think it's gonna be a while
but it's here on line until we can
get printed copies out there...
Anyway we'll put as much as
we can on line.
I don't mind tellin ya it's scary... When you're high risk and you're
lockdown for 4 months it does your bloody head in, I know I'm not on
my own, but when you've been doin 5 or 6 gigs a month then
suddenly you can't go out of your own beer garden... So now you can
play in beer gardens weather permitting, but I reckon it's gonna be
another couple of months before we're back playing in pubs etc.

not promoting it right, you've took
you're eye of the ball.

ESCAPE FROM THE WITCHWOOD
PHIL MATHEWS A.K.A THE VILLAGE
Now I don't do reviews, mainly because I either like
it or I don't and that's it. Now this is folk ish n blues
in places and I can guarantee you'll be doing a hop,
skip or some sort of movement to 3 or 4 tracks on
this CD the last track 'Devil came to Derbyshire' is a
cracking song and it's gone on my play list. I love it.

Lockdown
Interview
Anna: Apart from the band, it's been very boring to say the least, but I'm definitely looking back to getting into the swing of things again with the band and playing live!
What has been the hardest thing about the Lockdown for you all?
Brooke: Despite us being so new (only forming in January this year), we did manage to get a lot of things lined up in the lead up to our Debut Single release back in May. We had so many things planned; we were set to film a music video for the Single, we had physical meetings booked with a couple of management and record companies, not to mention our very first show at The Venue (Derby) in May, which has now had to be postponed to 24th September.
Anna: The hardest thing for me was not being able to see my friends and family.
How long have you been playing music and your respective instruments?
Brooke: Ever since I was a toddler, my mum used to try and encourage me to sing a few scales, I found it fun but didn’t take it too seriously. She kept persisting with me and I definitely think it has helped me become a singer now. I started to learn guitar at 8-years-old and wrote my first full-length song at nine (although it wasn’t great!).
Derby Gig Guide caught up with local Alt Rock/Grunge band, Muddibrooke for a chat during the enforced Lockdown thanks to the COVID-19 virus which is now gradually easing and life is gradually returning to a ‘new’ normal albeit with baby steps. Strange times indeed!
The band is Brooke (Harriet McDonnell) lead vocals/guitar, Anna Melidone bass/vocals and Mary Prince drums.
How are you all doing and how have you been coping over the last few months during the Lockdown?
Brooke: I’m pleased to say we’re all well! Coping with the lockdown has been a different matter… In some ways, I feel this whole bizarre situation has, dare I say it, helped us. At the beginning, we did feel a bit stopped in our tracks, but we got a call from BBC Radio Derby and they set us a challenge to write a song about the lockdown in just a week. This re-lit our dampened inspiration and we all did numerous video calls and got a song written. It’s called ‘Stay Home [Solo Acoustic]’ and can be heard on our Spotify profile.
That has helped us cope with the lockdown in some ways as it gave us something to concentrate on, along with getting the Debut Single released and promoting that.
On a separate note, but still on the subject of coping with the situation, I made a ping pong table out of a dining room table, and that has been keeping me sane (enough).

held a few auditions to find MuddiBrooke’s bassist. Luckily, Gez from the band Addictive Philosophy
introduced me to Anna and we clicked straight
away. I then held a few auditions for a drummer and found Mary. Straight away, we could all feel that the energy between us when we played was just great and we all clicked right from the start. We did hold a few auditions for a lead guitarist, but no luck in that department yet. Although, we are all more than happy to stay as a trio until the right one comes along!
Who are your music heroes or inspirations?
Brooke: Growing up, my mum used to listen to a lot of female artists such as Joan Armatrading, Dido, Joni Mitchell, Harry Nilsson, Tracy Chapman, Sheryl Crow, the list goes on! I believe being surrounded from such a young age by such great music definitely has had an effect on my music taste and inspiration. Rock side, I’ve always looked up to front woman, Skin, from Skunk Anansie. As well as, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Chrissie Hynde, Steven Tyler, Janis Joplin, Adam Ant and so many more great artists. I find all these artists inspirational.
Anna: For me, definitely Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters is my main one.
How would you best describe the music of MuddiBrooke and what the band is about?
Brooke: I’d say we’re a big mix of everything. There are characteristics from all angles of rock but also very slight hints of Country and Blues here and there. But as you have to pigeon-hole music these days for it to get heard, we stay under a label of ‘Alternative Rock/Grunge’.
Brooke, you have done a couple of live stream mini gigs on social media. How have you found those?
I’ll be honest I wasn’t keen on it. I love and feel so confident when performing live on stage but doing a live stream felt completely different. I still enjoyed it but it had a slightly creepy feeling to it. If I had a choice, I would choose to play a traditional live gig any day over a live stream, but obviously, if that’s what’s needed then that’s what’s got to be done. I missed the interaction from the crowd.
Would you and/or the band consider doing anymore in the future alongside actually gigging?
Brooke: As a band, I’m sure I’d enjoy it a whole lot
more. But I’d also worry about how the sound quality
would come across.
Anna: I actually played guitar before bass and I was around 10 when I got my first guitar, but I've been playing in bands since I was 14, which was also when I actually started playing bass. My first band was when I also started singing too.
When did the band form and how did you all meet?
Brooke: Back in November last year, I knew I wanted to start an all-girl, rock band, although I did expect it to be a challenge. I made a few posters that I stuck up in various rehearsal rooms around the East Midlands and I asked around if anyone knew any female bassists, drummers or lead guitarists. I got quite a few replies so firstly held a few auditions to find MuddiBrooke’s bassist. Luckily, Gez from the band Addictive

Hopefully, the music venue scene will bounce back and live streams won’t become the be all and end all.
Anna: I think that would be really cool to do a live stream in the future yeah! I'd definitely be up for that!
As the Lockdown is easing and we can meet in small groups have you managed to get together again rehearse?
Anna: Yeah we've met up a few times over the past month in Harriet's Garage which she turned into a practice room so we could have a socially distanced band practice; it has been really nice to play as a group again and get down writing done!
I really like your debut single Turn To Dust which was released back in May and has been well received. What is the inspiration behind the song?
Brooke: I actually had ‘Turn To Dust’ written for quite a while before the band even got together. It was great how both Anna and Mary latched on to the song and made it come alive.
I first wrote the song when I hopelessly fell for someone who didn’t feel the same. It highlighted the way that time was passing me by and there was nothing I could do about it. One of those typical love stories I suppose! I promise I’ll write a happy song at some point! Haha.
Will there be an EP or album to follow, if so, how is work on that going?
Brooke: Along with everything else we had planned, getting straight back in the studio has also had to be postponed. We are now booked in to record more material mid-August. Lockdown has messed up our schedule quite a bit but you can expect an EP from us October-November time, with a lead-up single release just before.
The Lockdown has seen all music venues forced to close and some sadly may never be able to reopen. You guys have been very vocal and supportive of the #saveourvenues and #letthemusicplay initiatives. Please can you give us your views on these campaigns and how important they are.
Anna: It’s very important to keep the small
businesses and venues going,
as without them, it would make it very difficult for any upcoming band/artist
Your debut live gig at The Venue in Derby has been rescheduled to 24 September. (Hopefully this still happens unless there is a localised Lockdown due to the virus). What are we likely to expect?
Brooke: If you can make it to the show, expect a lot of energy and a many new songs from us including a couple of well-known covers that have been shaken up a bit! Also brand new, MuddiBrooke T-shirts will be available to purchase from us
Anna: New music from us is what you can expect to hear at our very first show!
When will rehearsals begin and are you looking forward to the instant reactions/feedback to the new songs?
Anna: Definitely, I'm excited for people to hear what we've created, and I hope that people like it as much as we do!
Thank you all so much for your time. Derby Gig Guide will be at your debut gig.
For more information please visit www.muddibrooke.com. Tickets for the show at The Venue, Derby are available from the band website.
