GAUGE:

16 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern st.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern andthe materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in thepattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from personto person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller sizehook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

TECHNIQUE EXPLANATIONw&t (wrap and turn)1. Bring the yarn between the needles to the front of the work (the front is the side that is facing you).Take care not to wrap the yarn over a needle, this would create a new st.2. Slip the next st from the left hand needle to the right hand needle as if to purl.3. Turn the work. After turning, the yarn will be in the back of the work.4. Bring the yarn between the needles to the front of the work.5. Slip the first st on left needle as if to purl, back onto right needle. You will now have one st on the rightneedle with a wrap of yarn around the base of the st.6. Bring the yarn between the needles to the back of the work and continue with the row.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in one piece.2. The top of the Hat is shaped by working short rows. Short rows are easy – you simply leave some stsunworked at the end of a row!3. To prevent a hole from forming at the end of a short row, you’ll need to ‘wrap and turn’ a st – explained inTechnique Explanation above.
