Free Gifts Free gifts are used to increase sales of a magazine. They are something that the target audience is interested in, e.g. makeup or jewellery for teenage girls. Often, they attract new customers who haven’t read the magazine before and buy it purely for the free gift, they may enjoy the magazine so buy it again. Many magazines have free gifts as a way of competing with other magazines who also have free gifts. Many customers would chose the one with a free gift over the one without. Free gifts should aim to be suitable for all, and should not exclude any of the customers e.g. a T-shirt may not be suitable as it would not fit everyone. Free gifts are bought on a budget, so are often small. Therefore packaging is important to make them look eye- catching. This is a free gift from Top of the Pops magazine. It includes makeup which would interest the target audience of teenage girls. The colour of the makeup if very girly (pastel pink and pastel blue). The packaging contains multi coloured feathers, feathers have connotations of feather boas and dressing up (reflecting what makeup is used for). The packaging is very decorative, making up for the otherwise plain makeup. On the packaging there are 2 plugs. In one it says ‘Your 5-piece natural beauty kit’. This is a free gift from Top of the Pops magazine. It includes makeup which would interest the target

audience of teenage girls. The colour of the makeup if very girly (pastel pink and pastel blue). The packaging

contains multi coloured feathers, feathers have connotations of feather boas and dressing up (reflecting

what makeup is used for). The packaging is very decorative, making up for the otherwise plain makeup. On the packaging there are 2 plugs. In one it says ‘Your

5-piece natural beauty kit’. The 2nd person individual possessive pronoun ‘your’ involves the audience, as it emphasises the fact that the free gift now belongs to

them. The plu highlights the fact that you get 5 free gifts in one ‘5 piece beauty kit.

I will be using a free gift on my pop magazine because in my survey the respondents said that a free gift would increase the likelihood of them buying the magazine. Also other magazines in the genre have free gifts, so without one teenage girls may choose to buy those magazines over mine.
