In this digital, social age, everything is searched for online; products, companies and people. Just look at yourself, what do you use when you want to know something? My guess is that you start with a search engine like Google, Yahoo or Bing. And there a lot of statistics to prove that.
Control your online personal brand And fortunately, for you, the social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc… are among the first search results. Fortunately, because you can control them. The social networks give you the opportunity to control your online personal brand by using them the right way.
Online pressure So when you want your name to appear in the search results, you need to register for all the networks. As some people say; if you can’t be found online, you do not exist nowadays.
Privacy issue – control it! And then there is this privacy issue. People complaining, and for good reasons, that all these networks are an invasion of your privacy. But that is something you can control. You can, when you know how, control almost everything that can, publicly, be found about you online.
This book is part of a series of books about controlling your online privacy.

About LinkedIn
Since their start in 2003, LinkedIn has grown to be the number one professional social network in the world. With over a 330 million members worldwide and a growth of two new members every second, they are here to stay.
Together with the member growth, comes the growth in usage. More and more members log in on a daily basis and incorporate the information that LinkedIn provides in their daily activities.
Everyone uses search engines and social networks in their way of finding information about people and companies. LinkedIn is a big part of it. And will be bigger in the future.

Privacy on LinkedIn?Although LinkedIn is a professional network, and people only share professional data, there are still some privacy matters to take into account.
Maybe you want your connections protected, or you don’t want to be spammed by people you don’t know. Or maybe you forgot to log out in that hotel room abroad.
In this e-book I will show you 18 security and privacy settings that you might not know of, but can be very handy or even necessary.
So take a good look at all the settings and see if they apply to you.
It’s a good thing to know that you, your data and your privacy are secure.

Secure browsing with LinkedInWhile Facebook and Twitter have secure browsing by default (HTTPS), LinkedIn has just a setting to turn it on or off.
It’s a good thing to use secured browsing when you access your LinkedIn through open or public WIFI.

Where are you logged in with LinkedIn?
Watch the

Every time you log in to LinkedIn from another device or another location, it is possible that the session stays active. It is a good thing to check whether you are still logged in some sessions from maybe months ago. LinkedIn has a nice feature to see where you are still Logged In and make you log out automatically. Among the shown sessions you will also find your mobile apps. Leave them signed in or you will have to sign in again on them.

When you open this setting for the first time you might see a lot of old sessions. Just sign out of them all. Check this once a week to make sure you are not logged in on some exotic place :)

Extra e-mail account on your LinkedIn profile
1
When you only have one e-mail account connected to your LinkedIn profile, it is a good thing to add another one. In case you lose access to your e-mail account, you do have a backup now. When you only have a business account connected and your boss fires you and removes access to you e-mail account you can’t get back into your LinkedIn.

6It’s in your mailbox
My advice to have a personal mailaccount as your primary mailaccount for LinkedIn. This way you always have access. Have at least one extra mail account added, as a backup.

How to remove your LinkedIn profile from Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc…When people search for names on Google, Bing or Yahoo, the LinkedIn profile is always one of the top search results.
If you, for any reason, don’t want your LinkedIn profile to be found by search engines, LinkedIn provides you with an option to turn it off.

How to stop cookie-based advertising on your LinkedIn profile
If you don’t want people to see what you looked for on the web, when you show them your LinkedIn profile, it is wise to turn the cookies off!
One of the money makers for LinkedIn is advertising, like it is for most web services.
But sometimes ads can be very annoying. Especially when ads are based on your browsing history on other websites. So if you don’t want LinkedIn to show you ads, based on your browsing history somewhere else on the web, just turn off the cookies.

How to download all your LinkedIn dataJust like Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn offers you a way to receive all data that they have registered from you. Data about your connections, the date you joined, who invited you for you first LinkedIn login, the advertisers look at you, etc… An interesting set of data that you can open in Excel.
It might take some puzzling to find out what all data means, but when your handy with Excel, it will be fine!

Check with which apps your LinkedIn profile is connectedAs social login has become a standard for a lot of websites and apps to create an account, your LinkedIn account can be connected to some third parties.
Although LinkedIn is very strict in which developers can use their API for access, it is a good thing to check for yourself once in a while who has access to your account. Especially when it concerns websites or apps you don’t longer use.

How to block people on LinkedInOn several occasions, you might want to block people on LinkedIn. For instance when you are being stalked or when an competitor or copy cat, keeps looking at your profile and stealing our great ideas. Or just because you don’t like them.
Once you block a person, you are no longer connected with them. You are also not able to check their profiles.
You can block up to 50 members on LinkedIn.

How to get out of the ranking on LinkedInLinkedIn has a nice feature added to the Who’s viewed your profile section, called How you rank for profile views. It will show you how you rank amongst your connections or colleagues. Some people find it irritating to be seen by others in the ranking list. So if you don’t want to show up over there, you can turn this off.
I love this function and I can’t imagine why people want to be out of that list.

Hide your competition on LinkedInWhen you visit a profile on LinkedIn, most of the times you see a widget like this:
When people view your profiel, they see this as well. The suggested profiles might be your competitors. So if you don’t want the viewers of your profile hop on to someone you don’t want them to, simply hide this feature.
I’m not afraid of my competition, so I just keep this option on

How to become anonymous on LinkedIn
Watch the
video
I always think that people who are afraid to show themselves, do have something to hide. It is sort of spying :)
Sometimes you just want to sneak around LinkedIn and peek at other peoples profiles, without letting them know.
It is possible to move around like an anonymous person. But, when you use this function, you are not able to see who viewed your profile as well. So the choice is up to you!

Control who can see your connections on LinkedIn

Some people can have a good reason to hide their connections on LinkedIn. Maybe you don’t want your boss to see it?
Whatever reason you have, you can choose to not show your connections to your connections.
Your connections are always invisible for people who are not connected with you. Shared connections will always be visible. My connections are visible for all my connections.

Changing your public profile

When your public profile is not hidden (learn here how to hide your public profile) it is a good thing to have a look what people see on your profile when you are not connected with them.

You should really have a good look at this. Maybe you want to hide the details of your previous positions, your projects and your education. Just look at it and make your own choices.

Two way authentication

To make sure nobody longs in to your LinkedIn account, you can use Two Way authentication. With this option, you will receive a verification code (through a text-message on your mobile phone) whenever you want to log in from a new device.

Although only a few people use this option, I strongly recommend it. If you care about your network, you have to make sure that it doesn’t get in the wrong hands.!

Stop spam from group members on LinkedInRecommended

1 Open the group you want to change the settings for
Since I changed this for some ‘big member’ groups, the spam in my mailbox decreased. So my advice: check this setting for every group.
Did you know that one of the default settings in a group is that other group member can send you a message, without being connected? I bet you didn’t. So now it’s time to change that!
27
Secretly join groups on LinkedInOptional
1
If your changing your focus, i.e. your looking for a new job, you might want to join some interesting groups on LinkedIn. But if you don’t want people to know that you are looking around, then don’t tell them you are.

Just turn it off.
