PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS  

Please be advised Parent/Teacher mee ngs will be held on Thursday 30 July from 1pm to 7pm.  Appoint-ments will be available via the PTO system for Year 11/12 parents and students from Friday 3 July.  Parents of students in K–10 will have access to the PTO system from Midday on 27 July.  Please note in your calendars that students will be dismissed from the College on 30 July at 12:15pm.  Further informa on will be communi-cated to families early next term.  Mrs Veronica Parker Vice Principal

From the Principal  Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,  

LESSONS FROM SEMESTER ONE 2020  

“Every crisis contains both danger and opportunity: the opportunity to move out from the danger. Let us not lose our memory once all this is past, let us not file it away and go back to where we were”. – Pope Francis

 

We come to the end of a semester like no other – a semester that began with an invisible  enemy that appeared insidiously in our midst causing disbelief, bewilderment, fear, as its  tentacles moved from one country to the next, state by state, embracing all in its grasp.  

Once we iden fied that the only means of thwar ng the enemy was through a united commu-nity resolve we changed our way of living and learning leading to new experiences – isola on, social distancing, and remote learning.  As I write, the enemy has been somewhat tamed in Western Australia but is by no means vanquished.  The challenge con nues.  

But amidst the worry and uncertainty of the past months many posi ves have emerged.  Strong learning has con nued, albeit in a different manner, new ways of learning and teaching have been embraced, student well-being has been nourished.  We have also come to a greater apprecia on of family and friends and a deeper understanding of the joys and challenges of space and solitude, of the importance of balancing ac vity with rest, ac on and reflec on.  We have slowed, stopped, breathed deeply and emerged as different people.    

But in the words of Pope Francis the next challenge needs to be embraced – “Let us not lose our memory once all this is past, let us not file it away and go back to where we were”.

This concept was strongly ar culated by Frayne teachers and teacher assistants over the last four weeks as we reflected on what we have learned from this experience and what should be retained to be carried into the future.  The success of our collec ve endeavours was driven by a strong commitment to the wellbeing and learning of our students and built on a willingness to be adap ve and innova ve – a mindset that will con nue to drive our efforts to enhance student learning and an environment where God is part of the conversa on.  

Many students have risen to the variety of imposed challenges by drawing on a growth mindset, a dose of op mism, a dash of humour and degree of diligence to ensure they con nued their learning.  The benefits are visible and evident in student reflec ons and dialogue about the experience.  Many have shown resilience beyond their age.  Others have developed a greater understanding of how they learn.  

The circumstances of this semester with its associated learnings have provided further impetus to reflect, research and reimagine learning in the future and ask ques ons such as:  What knowledge, skills and a ributes do our students need to thrive in this complex world?  What kind of learning is needed for this current and future complexity?  How do we ensure equity?  How do we a end to wellbeing?  What have we learned from remote learning?  How can technology be best leveraged for learning for the future?  

So o en over the last few months the word ‘unprecedented’ has been used to describe the pandemic.  Today, we can say that we have a precedent of how our Frayne family, as a learning and faith sharing community, centred in Christ, responded to challenging  mes.  Congratu-la ons, we have set a precedent – you have established excellence (doing ordinary things well) as the way to manage challenge.  

As such, I take this opportunity to thank all parents/carers for your support during this challenging  me and I thank staff for their hard work and dedica on and for their constant efforts to encourage and support your sons and daughters.  I acknowledge our wonderful students who ensured that we did not need to be in the same physical space to be connected with each other and live our Mercy values.  

STAFFING MATTERS  

This week we welcomed Leanne Appleford back to the College a er a period of extended leave and thanked Robyn McMahon for diligently undertaking the role of Deputy Business Manager during Leanne’s absence.  Robyn will now move into a substan ve posi on as the College’s Enrolment Officer. 

We also farewelled:  Damian Stefanoff (Teacher – Duncan Street Campus) who has been recently appointed to the founda on staff of St Mar n de Porres 

School (SMDPS), Broome.  SMDPS is a Curriculum and Re‐engagement in Educa on (CARE) School which will have as its current prime purpose, the educa on of secondary aged students who have been unable to access or have significant difficulty in accessing main-stream educa on.  These young people fall into the category of “young people at risk”.  Damian will commence his new posi on at the beginning of Term 3, 2020. 

Raelene Ri kis (Ac ng Balmoral Execu ve Assistant -2019 and Ac ng Enrolment Officer - 2020) and Elena Santalucia (Teacher –  Balmoral Street Campus) who have completed short term contracts.  

 

We thank Damian, Raelene and Elena for their contribu ons and service to our College community during their respec ve tenures and wish them well as they prepare to embark on the next phase of their personal and professional journeys.  

Our thoughts and prayers are with Gerri Vanpraag (Teacher Assistant – Balmoral Street Campus) as she embarks on a period of Long Service Leave during Semester 2.  May her extended break provide  me for rest and rejuvena on and we look forward to her safe return in 2021.  

I wish you all a happy and safe two-week break and look forward to Term 3 with hope and confidence.

ST THOMAS THE APOSTLE  

The feast of St Thomas the Apostle is celebrated on 3 July.  He was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus for his public mission and he is commonly known as "Doub ng Thomas" because he doubted the resurrec on of Jesus.  In this well-known account in the gospel of St John (Jn 20: 24-29), St Thomas was not there with the other Apostles when Jesus appeared to them and when he heard about it Thomas said: "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe".  The next me that Jesus appeared, one week later, Thomas was with them.  Jesus said to Thomas: "Put your finger here; see my hands.  Reach out 

your hand and put it into my side.  Stop doub ng and believe".  Thomas answered with a profound statement of faith: "My Lord and my God".  A er that Jesus gave a blessing to all of us who believe in him: "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed".  According to tradi on, Thomas went to India to announce the good news of Jesus where he gave his life and he is regarded as the patron saint of that country.  

Pope Francis, no ng the absence of St Thomas when Jesus first appeared said: “And He allows the  me He believes best for each of us.  He gave Thomas a week.  Jesus reveals himself with His wounds: His whole body was clean, beau ful and full of light but the wounds were and are s ll there, and when the Lord comes at the end of the world, we will see His wounds.  Before he could believe, Thomas wanted to place his fingers in the wounds.  He was stubborn.  But that was what the Lord wanted – a stubborn person to make us understand something greater.  Thomas saw the Lord and was invited to put his finger into the wounds le  by the nails; to put his hand in His side.  He did not mere-ly say, ‘It’s true: the Lord is risen’.  No!  He went further.  He said: ‘God’.  He was the first of the disciples to confess the divinity of Christ a er the Resurrec on.  And he worshipped Him.”  

Let us ask for the gi  of Faith to guide us out of the doubts of our life and like St Thomas recognise and believe in Jesus.

AUSSIE OF THE MONTH  

Congratula ons to Alexandra Temby (6R) who was announced as the Aussie of the Month for June.  

Alexandra is a student who  can be relied upon to do the right thing at all  mes.  She is polite and really cares about her peers.  Alexandra is prepared to work independently and is self-mo vated in all learning areas.   She consistently uses her ini a ve to achieve the set success criteria and produces work to a high standard. Alexandra is extremely helpful and kind and a fantas c role model for her peers as she will go out of her way to help anyone in her classroom.   

Mrs Nenke says she will o en give up break  mes to help staff and students.  Alexandra demonstrated this when she assisted Year 3R to pre-record their assembly item so the Frayne community could enjoy their  performance, even with COVID-19 restric ons in place!  Her super knowledge with all things techno was  appreciated by them.  Well done Alexandra!

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been able to provide our students  and families with some of the 600kg mandarins we recently received!  The mandarins have been distrib-uted by Second Bite, donated from local citrus growers and made possible by 5000 Meals, a not for profit associa on.  Thanks to Mrs Searson, who is a member and volunteer with 5000 Meals, for organising.
