Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 3 Annual Report 2011-2012

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As we head towards the completion of the Club’s second decade in the Premier Cricket competition our consistency of finals appearances and improved win/loss ratios suggest we have the best committed talent the region has to offer. This is further complemented by first class contracted players continuing to represent our Club at the higher levels, both within senior and junior elite squads. The appointment of Nick Jewell has seen a toughening up of the way we now go about our game and preparation without compromise. He is ably supported by a well credentialed group of coaches, second to none in the competition. However we probably threw away our best opportunity so far to win the Club Championship as well as play off in another 1st XI grand final, albeit the 4ths snagged a one-day pennant which is terrific for this

developing group. It proves we need to keep improving and building the knowledge and understanding of what it takes to be the best, both as a club and individually. Congratulations to Scott Boland on his first class debut, a fantastic reward for effort. Scott was also recently upgraded to a full Cricket Victoria player contract. The retirement of Darren Groves will no doubt impact our Club. Darren’s contribution and playing record are testament to his professional approach and attention to detail. I again congratulate him on a wonderful career that has accumulated the respect of all in Premier Cricket and beyond. Cricket Operations Manager Mark O’Sullivan has also advised he will not continue in this role. “Sully’s” contribution has been outstanding and on behalf of the Club I thank him for his dedication and the professional manner in which he undertook the tasks associated with this portfolio. Accepting our responsibility as a Premier Club in the region and the development and support of pathway squads is vitally important to our sustainability in Premier cricket. The strength of our partnership with local associations is imperative with support from Cricket Victoria and the Regional Cricket Manager, ensures a well coordinated program for young aspiring cricketers to reach their potential. To the entire pathway support groups coaches, managers and scorers’ thank you for providing much needed support and direction. I also acknowledge the role that many parents play providing background support, guidance and for the manner in which many have embraced the “Heat” as their Club. It is hugely beneficial and important for our Club to have pathway coaches, David McClean, Brett Hudgson and Peter Hall integrate with our Club in development roles that assist the transition from pathway cricket to Premier Cricket.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 4 Annual Report 2011-2012

Governance Many will be aware a major challenge during the past season was to resolve a delayed energy account totaling $29,100 (shared with our shared tenant). Following lengthy discussions and negotiations with the provider Simply Energy and the relevant Ombudsman I am pleased to report that a saving of around $6,300 was achieved as well as an interest free payment plan over 12 months. While the Club will have this burden until February 2013, the benefits of having clarity allows the Board to forward plan the budget estimates with some surety. The Club’s financial position, while stable, continues to confront the Board as an ongoing challenge to maintain responsible fiscal management on behalf of the members. I reiterate my comments from previous reports that rather than carry a significant surplus the decision to invest in our current and future players via the assembled coaches is a direction the Board is strongly committed too. However with operational overheads continuing to increase and other income streams stabilizing there may need to be a review of the extent to which the Board commits to this policy going forward. I commend the efforts of our home bred General Manager Glenn Davey for his due diligence across our governance operations, putting in many hours above and beyond expectations. Cricket Victoria Our Club must be committed to being competitive in all formats as the future direction of the Premier Cricket competition is evolving and we must have the flexibility to evolve with and commit to it better than we did with our T20 participation last season. One day format changes, BBL’s T20 emergence and the continuing focus of the longer forms of the competition, suggests there are opportunities for a broader group of players to get to the elite first class level. Volunteers Most Premier Clubs are struggling for active volunteers to fill a variety of tasks over a week in season and I remain convinced our volunteers are outstanding in the areas of commitment and importantly reliability. I particularly acknowledge and thank Pam Clements who took on the mighty challenge of managing the canteen operations, ensuring we stayed at the top of the ladder for service provision to our loyal group of supporters and visitors. The canteen operations achieved a record turnover, driven by Pam’s astute management skills and support from others, particularly Mary Coleman. Congratulations to Mary Coleman on being acknowledged as the best club person for 2011/2012. Mary has been a wonderful contributor to the Club over many years and taken many different tasks along the way, well deserved. A special thank you also to the dynamic Thursday night meals team led by Sarah Walker and Karen Voelkl with an able supporting group providing a variety of meals for our enjoyment each selection night. This is a great tradition and appreciated by all.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 5 Annual Report 2011-2012

Another season of the “Heat in the Kitchen” luncheons was successfully driven by Mark Dunsford. I again thank Mark for his efforts in establishing a significant supporter data base and a successful series of lunches and outstanding guest speakers. Local Government Last season was probably the most difficult year we have experienced with The Frankston City Council for some time. Late ground rehab on the East Oval resulted in playing away or on Sunday’s for the first month of the season, plus allowing a disease to impact the wicket table and sections of the playing field of Butler Oval meant a summer of discontent and the provision of unsatisfactory playing conditions on a number of occasions. While it should be acknowledged Council’s Parkland services team made every effort to correct the errors of judgment, it was difficult. With their ongoing support for the provision of first class Jubilee Park facilities, we can no doubt look forward to having the best two playing conditions in the Premier Competition. I also take this opportunity to briefly outline Council’s proposal to Master Plan the Jubilee Park precinct, focusing on elite netball and cricket, but retaining football as a tenant. Options to be explored are: a new show court netball stadium, redevelopment of the “Trotting track” for junior football and possibly a Premier women’s cricket team/s, the Butler Oval becoming a standalone cricket field, additional change rooms to facilitate four cricket teams, formalised walking tracks and upgraded playground and lake amenities. The Master Plan is a current work in progress. Sponsorship Thank you to our major sponsor Buildsafe Building Insurances. Phil Graf and his team are fantastic supporters of our Club and have been over a long period. We express the Board’s gratitude for his continued support. The Frankston RSL, have also been long term partners supporting our Club over our journey, also adding a donation of a defibulator to their contribution this season. Mark Dunsford from Dunsford Financial Planning, and Martin Scanlon from Rail Signalling Services are both special sponsor partners and we appreciate their ongoing involvement. To all our players, loyal volunteers, members and sponsors I particularly, on behalf of the Board, wish to thank you for your continued support throughout 2011/2012 season. Your support is the very foundation from which we can better prepare to take on the challenges ahead that will make us a successful and sustainable Premier Cricket Club. We are all looking forward with great anticipation and excitement to the ‘HEAT’ continuing to improve in 2012/2013.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 6 Annual Report 2011-2012

General maNagER’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I submit Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Annual Report for Season 2011/2012. The process of compiling the Annual Report provides a great opportunity to assemble a detailed record of the achievements and records of the club from the recent season. Personally, I have enjoyed my first full year in this role, being able to contribute to the operations of the club in many different aspects. I have taken pride in driving new initiatives that have added positively to the club, including significantly enhancing our website and social media presence, providing online live scorecards for our followers, encouraging a strong family environment welcoming for children, providing vibrant and refreshed member newsletters, enhancing the data delivered on the electronic scoreboard, and enhancing our cash management procedures to highly scrutinized levels.

I must commend the extremely valuable contribution from our President, Dennis Prendergast. He puts so much time and energy into our club, managing many key relationships with our important stakeholders. All members should congratulate Dennis on his long standing efforts for the club. Administration As in previous years, Cricket Victoria provided funds and assistance to enable the Club to manage its administration responsibilities in accordance with Cricket Victoria’s Criteria Assessment for all Premier Cricket Clubs. Cricket Victoria’s support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to developing proposed initiatives from Cricket Victoria whereby our club can combine with other Premier Clubs and other sporting groups to use our combined strength in various negotiations with suppliers. Playing Nick Jewell again led the club as senior coach. Backed up with skilled support staff in Peter Buchanan, Shaun Graf, David McClean, Ian Brayshaw and the newly appointed Chris Hall, the player group was fortunate to again have such a highly qualified coaching group to draw on. The 1st XI was very competitive all season to back up their Grand Final effort of 2010/2011. Although heavily reliant on bowling sides out cheaply to secure victories, the side got the job done more often than not to reach another Semi Final. The team showed great character to back up from a Round 16 thrashing against arch rivals Geelong, to defeat them outright the following week in the Qualifying Final. Well done to Matt Chasemore who delivered a brilliant all round season. Chris Hall brought a new high level of professionalism, showing the importance of planning and preparation. His leadership in the 2nd XI was very beneficial, and he assisted the development of the next batch of 1st XI cricketers in the making. The 2nd XI was certainly good enough to play finals, but they ended up being the only side to not make the finals. Allowing large lower order partnerships to form in three of the final four rounds proved costly, seeing the side lose the last three games and miss out on the finals by only 3 points. Due to family commitments, it is a shame that Chris Hall will depart the club after his first season, where his outstanding individual performances also saw Chris finish runner up in the 2nd XI Player of the Season. We wish Chris all the best, and we will continue to hold a strong link with Chris through Saxon Sports Frankston.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 7 Annual Report 2011-2012

The 3rd XI was superbly led again by Jason Wylie, who kept the side in the top four for the majority of the season. Historically the 3rd XI has struggled to figure towards the top of the ladder, so it was a well earned reward for the efforts of the side to reach the One Day Semi Final as well as host two home Two Day Finals. Some more composure with the bat in the Two Day Semi Final would’ve seen the side playing for its first premiership. Hopefully the harsh lessons learnt from the conclusion of the finals campaign will drive the group to bigger and better things next season. Congratulations also to Josh Waldron, whose domination with the bat was suitably rewarded at the Cricket Victoria Gala Awards with the 3rd XI Player of the Year award. The young talent in the 4th XI shone through during the season, culminating with a thrilling One Day Semi Final victory leading into the One Day Premiership. This was certainly a very exciting moment for the young group, giving them a taste of the greater rewards on offer in March. Unfortunately, back to back trips down the Geelong Highway halted their finals momentum, but overall it was a very successful season for this young group. It was extremely pleasing to see the club figure so prominently in the Club Championship Ladder, where we led the standings after the first month of cricket, and stayed in the top two or three positions until falling to finish in fourth position after not collecting any points in our final round of matches against Geelong. To be in a position to win the Club Championship for the first time in our history provides the evidence that the depth of player talent throughout the entire club is pleasingly at a very high level. The playing retirements announced at the end of the season, in particular of Darren Groves and Nick Jewell, will no doubt create challenges to replace their valuable contributions. However it provides opportunities for our younger players to step up and carry on their legacy. The record of Groves is unbelievable, listing him as one of the legends of Premier Cricket. He will leave the Heat as the record holder of highest Club Games (274), Club Wickets (551), 1st XI Games (225) and 1st XI Wickets (464). Under Jewell’s leadership over the past four seasons the club has elevated to another level, with Jewell extracting significant improvement from the playing list. He has created a winning culture, creating plenty of finals opportunities for all players. We thank these two players tremendously for their on field contributions, and wish them well for the future. Jewell will remain at the club in an off field coaching role, and we are sure that Darren will never be far away from the club. Arrivals The club secured the addition of the following players to the senior list for Season 2011/12: Jacob Bardwell (right arm spinner and attacking batsman from Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll), Kyle Brooke (right arm opening bowler returning back to the club from Cranbourne), Will Crowder (attacking middle order batsman and off spinner, joining the club from Peninsula Old Boys through the FPCC Scholarship), Charlie Davy (opening batsman visiting from Burley-in-Wharfedale, Yorkshire, UK), Tom Feldgen (young opening bowler from Peninsula Old Boys), Chris Hall (former County all rounder, from McKinnon), Ben Hillard (top order batsman from Dandenong), Ryan Hillard (young all rounder from Hallam Kalora Park), Tom Paganoni (Moorooduc), Aidan Wheeler (fast bowler from Mornington) and Jake Wood (up and coming opening bowler from Balnarring). Departures Players who left the club following the 2010/2011 season included: Patrick Damen, Juvaunie Gayle, Leroy Haines, Brendan Jovic, Luke Reid, Matt Ryan, Riley Shaw and Mitch Wilson. After initially commencing his career with the club as a teenager in 1994/1995, Leigh Lowry concluded his time at the Jubilee Park as the 2nd highest run scorer in the club’s history. During his 230 valuable games for the club, including 89 in the 1st XI and 98 in the 2nd XI, Leigh made

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 8 Annual Report 2011-2012

5520 runs with 30 half centuries and 5 centuries. His highest score was 127, made in the 2nd XI. Leigh completed his career by captaining the 2nd XI during 2010/2011. After captaining the 4th XI since 2007/2008, Brett Hudgson left the Heat after achieving success including a 4th XI Grand Final, 4th XI Player of the Year and Thompson Medals. He played 73 games for 1621 runs and 82 wickets, leading his young sides to many victories over his four years. Volunteers There is a significant amount of volunteers within the Club who deserve recognition for their contributions. Thanks must go to Mark O’Sullivan (Chairman of Selectors), Ian Boldiston (Training Captain, Team Manager), Brian Nankervis (Photographer), Martin Wylie (Team Manager), Ivan Ashkenazi (Team Manager, Scorer), Nick Salerni (Team Manager, Scorer), Adrian Coleman (Team Manager, Scorer), Wayne Ross (Scorer), Michael Robinson (Scorer), Graeme Brewer (Matchday Helper), Darren Christy (General Handyman!), Pam Clements (Canteen), Mary Coleman (Canteen), Sarah Walker (Meals), Karen Voelkl (Meals), Jo Davey (Meals). Thank you must also go to Gary Woolard, Gavin Bock and Phil Regos from Frankston City Council from their efforts in maintaining the high standards of the Jubilee Park precinct. Board of Management Finally, recognition should be provided to the hard working FPCC Board of Management which included throughout the year: Dennis Prendergast (President), David Archer (Vice President), Glen Elmi (Vice President), Glenn Davey (Treasurer), Martin Wylie (Secretary), Ivan Ashkenazi, James Keenan, Chris McCormick and Jason Wylie. Personally, it has been a pleasure to work with a great group of guys in achieving some great outcomes for the Club.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 9 Annual Report 2011-2012

COaCh’S REPORT

As last ball was bowled against Richmond in the semi final it brought to an end a terrific four years for a group that delivered so much yet ultimately achieved nothing. From last on the ladder with very few genuine prospects we turned into, over a short space of time, a competitive side that slowly earned respect in the competition and came within a whisker of pinching a premiership. Reality is however a favourite and the most successful player in the clubs history has now been and gone with nothing to show for his career other than his personal wicket tally, and over 500 odd games of experience has walked out the door. The respect earned over these last 4 years will count for nothing when the first ball is bowled next season. Sides will be coming for payback knowing the two most senior players are no longer there to engage in the verbal and physical encounters.

Unfortunately I got the feeling as we developed as a group and trying to find the ingredients for the clubs first ever senior premiership, some of us slowly started to drift away from the ‘team first’ mentality and that higher playing honours and personal milestones were the reason we went out there every week. Without the desperate attention to detail and the number one thought to ‘play your role’ in the ‘team’, winning premierships is almost impossible and the road back from being branded selfish is ‘almost impossible’. With all the players over a 16 year career I played with that achieved higher honours to state cricket then Australian selection, all of them were given their chance at the next level after continual team success in winning finals and Shields. It’s not rocket science. I would like to thank all the coaches that have been involved over the last four years that helped build this group, and to the committee for their support. To Cheeks and the playing group, good luck. It’s a tough game and only the toughest are successful. If you think I was tough on you, I get the feeling you haven’t seen anything yet. I enjoyed the journey.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 10 Annual Report 2011-2012

Finance

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club realised an audited net loss of ($20,719) for Season 2011/2012 compared to a net profit of $33,730 in Season 2010/2011. The large variance in comparison to the prior year is heavily skewed by the $40,000 capital income received from Cricket Victoria last season as a contribution to the electronic scoreboard. The remainder of the variance can be attributed to the additional energy payments paid to Simply Energy after settling our ongoing dispute. The financial information is based on accrual accounting, is exclusive of GST, and includes non-cash transactions such as amortisation, depreciation and adjustments. To expand, $6,673 of the listed income was still receivable at 30 April 2012, while $14,872.16 of the listed expenditure was still payable at 30 April 2012. When non cash accounting items (depreciation and amortization) are disregarded, the actual Operating Loss sits at ($9,359.51). The following explanations are provided for clarification of the result in some areas.

Income: Cricket Victoria As per other seasons, assistance from Cricket Victoria in the form of Distributions, Internet Grant, Junior Development Grant, and Administration Manager Grants is greatly appreciated. Cricket Victoria also assisted in reimbursing costs incurred to host finals. Following the 1st XI making the Semi Final and with the Club finishing fourth in the Club Championship, the Club also received an unbudgeted amount of $3,000 in prize-money. In respect to the loan with Cricket Victoria for their contribution to the electronic scoreboard, the first two repayments ($10,000 combined) plus interest ($3,800 combined) have been made, to reduce the outstanding balance from $35,000 to $25,000. This commitment of $5,000 plus interest per year over the next five years is something the Board will carefully continue to plan and budget for. Bar, Canteen and Selection Night Meals. Thanks to the amazing leadership and management of Pam Clements, who was ably assisted by Mary Coleman, the results of the Canteen leapt to record high levels. This was also assisted by a strict weekly reporting process that ensured complete accuracy over the transactions. Sarah Walker and Karen Voelkl also did an amazing job with the Selection Night Meals, making a significant profit for the club of $3,501. The revenue received in the canteen was sufficient to allow sandwiches, rolls, cakes and cordial to be provided for player afternoon teas free of charge. The bar sales remained relatively stable thanks to hosting 13 external functions in the facility during the season along with a more active social program for club members. Peninsula Twenty20 Challenge This initiative (as further detailed in the Annual Report) proved to be another exciting event, with the financial outcome also more favourable in comparison to the prior year. Learning from the necessary and unnecessary transactions that we incurred during the first event, the joint committee with the MPCA was more conservative regarding our spending for this 2011/2012 event. As a result, even with slightly less people attending due to the hot conditions, the profit for the day increased from $755 to $2,734 which was again evenly shared between FPCC and the MPCA to be reinvested into junior cricket programs. Membership We again thank the playing group considerably for their strong support of their club through the current membership structure, first implemented at the 2009 AGM. I encourage supporters to strongly consider becoming a social member to further support your Club financially. Social During Season 2011/2012, the Club continued “Heat in the Kitchen”, a series of luncheons which included fine dining, high profile guest speakers (Tony Noonan, Tony Dodemaide, Stephen Phillips, Tony Jewell, Adrian Butler, Ken Piesse, and Shaun Graf) and the opportunity to reminisce with past and present friends and family. Organised very well by Mark Dunsford, these luncheons proved to again be very successful for the Club. They continued to build the profile of FPCC, while also generating a profit of over $2,000. A new feature in the social program for this season was a $5,000 draw. This was very well supported by players and members, seeing a profit of $3,350 returned to the club.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 11 Annual Report 2011-2012

Sponsorship We are grateful to continue to receive wonderful support from our sponsors, in particular Buildsafe Building Insurances (Phil Graf), Frankston RSL (Rob Morrison), Dunsford Financial Planning (Mark Dunsford), Rail Signalling Services (Martin Scanlon), Saxon Sports Frankston (Chris Hall), National Australia Bank (Jacinta Broatch), Reddy Roasts Frankston & Somerville (Daniel Watts), Graham Quarries (Chris Hutchinson) and C&S Lightweight (Tony Stocker). Thank you to Mark Dunsford and Robert Withers who both play a key role on behalf of the club in generating and maintaining positive relationships with new and existing sponsors.

Expenditure: Facility As expected with the quality of facility the Club has access to, there is a considerable amount of expenditure to maintain its presentation and operations such as cleaning costs of $3,032 and materials & repairs of $4,160. As reported last year, no invoices had been received for electricity since February 2010. Prior to last season, Simply Energy imposed an invoice on the shared tenants of $29,133 for the period of February 2010 to July 2011. Both tenants felt it was unreasonable to expect this to be immediately paid in full and a long standing dispute (including the debate over the legal entitlement to charge back dated invoices) developed. Following lengthy negotiations including assistance from the Energy Ombudsman and local government, it was identified that a $6,350 discount should’ve been implemented on the account as per the original contract in place. Combined with a 12 month payment plan, the burden on both clubs had now been slightly eased. The impact on the financial statements is that Light & Power is now listed at around double the usual balance. The FPCC portion owing of $12,313 (including 2011/2012 charges) is to be paid by instalment between May 2012 and February 2013. Pleasingly, we are now receiving monthly electricity invoices! Grounds Ground rental fees payable to the Frankston City Council for the A.H. Butler Oval and Eastern Oval returned to a regular amount of $9,832 following the full availability of both grounds. Our Ground related expenditure included an investment in a new line marking machine to ease the burden on volunteers, along with the purchase of new covers and hessian which were well overdue. Merchandise $4,659 worth of current merchandise purchases remains on hand to be sold. The Board is currently in the process of evaluating new clothing designs to be implemented for the 2013/2014 season, as per the timeline agreed with the players at the introduction of the current range of clothing. This transition will soon see the merchandise expenditure and in turn merchandise sales increase. Playing The Club continued with a policy of two professional players, with Nick Jewell (Captain/Coach) and Jon Holland appointed again for Season 2011/2012. In addition, the club continued to support an extensive coaching panel to support Nick’s appointment with Peter Buchanan, Shaun Graf and David McClean continuing in their roles, Ian Brayshaw reducing his role, and Chris Hall appointed as a Spin Bowling Coach. Other playing costs also incorporated fees for umpiring, scorers and first aid supplies. Umpiring costs increased by $3,722 due to the many extra days played compared to the heavily rain effected 2010/2011. Further, indoor practice and cricket equipment costs combined to $20,025 to outline the significant investment by the club in playing resources.

Summary: The Club finances remain very delicately balanced, with the usual annual process of entering into significant overdraft occurring again in the lead up to Season 2012/13. The Board will continue to conservatively manage the finances, and look to reassess our investment in some areas in order to ease the financial pressure regularly experienced each winter.

Chasemore quickly shot to the top of the leaderboard, leading by 4 votes after Round 5 and then by 10 votes after Round 11. By the completion of his extremely consistent season, he had generated a 14 vote lead to claim his first Thompson Medal. Demonstrating why he led the Cricket Victoria Ryder Medal count right up until the final round, Chasemore polled Thompson Medal votes in a staggering 13 of a possible 15 matches. He polled a single vote on three occasions, two votes in four matches, and secured the full three votes in six matches being Round 2 vs Casey South Melbourne, Round 4 vs Ringwood, Round 6 vs Fitzroy Doncaster, Round 8 vs Hawthorn Monash University, Round 11 vs North Melbourne and in Round 12 vs Northcote. Equal second place on 15 votes was shared between 1st XI all rounder and four time Thompson Medalist James Miller, experienced left arm 3rd XI bowler Robbie Fisher, and rising star Jake Wood who debuted half way through the season to capture an amazing 31 wickets at an average of just 10.77 from only 11 matches.

The Thompson Medal is voted upon by the opposition captains of each grade following every round. Amazingly, they were able to recognize 51 separate FPCC players throughout the season’s voting.

CLUB Awards

Donald Cameron Memorial Under 21 Award

- MITCHELL DRUMMOND

This award was kindly sponsored by National Australia Bank (Karingal Branch) for the first time in Season 2011-12. The award recognizes the most outstanding Under 21 leader within the club in honour of a past player from Frankston Cricket Club who tragically lost their life at a young age. Mitchell Drummond was a deserving recipient of the award. Since arriving at the club in 2009/2010, Mitchell quickly developed into a leading 2nd XI bowler who is known for an efficient action that achieves economic results. After rehabilitating from a concerning back injury, Mitchell showed terrific leadership in his return to cricket, leading the young 4th XI side to the One Day Premiership before making

a very useful contribution to the 3rd XI finals campaign. He is set for a very big season in 2012/2013, where a 1st XI debut is on his radar. During his 43 games for the club, Mitchell has claimed 73 wickets at an impressive average of 18.29.

Wills Best Club Person Award

- mary coleman

Mary Coleman has been recognized as the Best Clubman for Season 2011/2012, receiving the Bill & Nance Wills Award. Mary has been a wonderful contributor to the Club over many years and has taken on many different tasks during that time. During the last two seasons in particular, Mary increased her role within the canteen to provide valuable assistance in running the canteen to the club’s high standards. When the valuable long service of husband Adrian is also considered, this duo has certainly served the club in a significant way.

Ron Short ACHIEVEMENT Award

– Scott Boland

This award is chosen by respected club member Ron Short who identifies emerging young talent deserving of the award. Typically the award is presented to a player who had achieved Victorian representation. There have been various FPCC players who have recently received higher honours at various age levels. However the stand out player, and recipient of this achievement award for the 2011/2012 Season is Scott Boland. Scott made his first class debut for Victoria during 2011/2012, becoming the first home grown Frankston Peninsula cricketer to make it to this level. After capturing 9 wickets in his opening three first class matches, Scott is looking to further develop his representative career, especially after being elevated to the full contract list for Victoria for 2012/2013.

Junior development

Once again, the Club was at the forefront of Cricket Victoria’s Pathways Program in respect of the South East Country Region. In August, the Club hosted the Regional Pathways Information Session and again it was standing room only with around 200 (prospective players and their parents) in attendance. From September until the end of December, the Club provided training facilities on the turf practice wickets for each of the Squads to utilize.

Under 14’s The Under 14 Squad was coached and managed by Darren O’Brien and Peter Hall. The Under 14 Squad comprised Cameron Brown (Cardinia) and Alastair Christy (Berwick) who had played in the Season previous plus Keiran Collins, Aaron Edwards & Leon Davis – all from Langwarrin, Jacob Weitering & Brodie Symons from Mornington, Casey Miller-Trickey (Pearcedale), Jack Birthisel (Baden Powell), Zachary Chaplin & Ben Parrot from Pakenham, Callum Parton from Peninsula Old Boys and Kyle Bendle (Mt Martha). After losing the first two games, the team had a big win against the Pioneers when a consistent batting effort set-up the victory and a great fighting effort to win the Quarter Final against the Wizards. In the Final match the bowlers did a superb job in dismissing the Scorpions for just 78 but unfortunately the total was just fractionally too many.

Under 16’s The Under 16 Squad was coached by Brett Hudgson, Kierran Voelkl and David McClean. The squad comprised Frankston Peninsula player Jake Wood (Balnarring), Jake Smart (Mt Martha) who played last season and Jackson Mockett (Skye), Gordon Waterfall (Carrum Downs), James Maxwell (Carrum/Patterson Lakes), Angus Groves, James Freeman & Thomas La Brooy from Peninsula Old Boys, Toyosi Solanke (Officer), Adam McMaster (Koo Wee Rup) and Nicholas Taranto (Tyabb) who both played with the Under 14’s last Season, Julian Hanfi-Scott (Emerald) and James Vella (Pakenham). The team lost the Twenty20 game against Gippsland pretty easily and then won their next two games comfortably, highlighted by James Vela’s fine century against the Wizards and terrific bowling performances by Adam McMaster and James Freeman. They then defeated Central Highlands, coming from ‘nowhere’ to take the points with Jake Wood and Jake Smart superb with the ball and three run-outs being a feature in the field. In the Semi-Final, the winner to play in the Grand Final for the Dowling Shield, we found the going tough with the bat, losing crucial wickets in succession – crashing from 1/63 to 4/64, from 4/90 to 6/90 and from 6/113 to 8/115. While the target was not a great one for the Falcons, they were made to work hard by our hard-toiling bowlers.

Under 18’s The Under 18 Squad was coached by David McClean and Joel Wylie and managed by Wayne Ross. The squad comprised Anthony Northeast (Devon Meadows/Dandenong) who played in the previous Season and Robert Salerni (Heatherhill), Michael Edwards (Langwarrin), Thomas Feldgen and William Crowder, both from Peninsula OB and Billy Humphrey from Pines who all played with the Under 16’s last Season, Jordon Pomeroy from Mt Martha, Jake Bardwell from Nar Nar Goon, Jack Heseltine and Aidan Wheeler from Mornington, Callum Sutton (Pines), Nathan Cassano (Frankston YCW) and Ryan Eaton from Tooradin. The first game, against Gippsland, was a disaster and the third game against the Bayside Breakers was almost as bad. In between those games a win against the North East Falcons was achieved thanks to a great partnership between Michael Edwards and Will Crowder and a ‘never-say-die’ effort by the team when in the field. Thursday was a wash-out so we went into the final day fighting for positions 9 to 12. Chasing a total of 181 we fell to 9/130 but a superb, fighting stand by Aidan Wheeler and Tom Feldgen took the victory with 2 balls to spare.

The Under 18’s finished just out of the top eight, the Under 16’s just one victory away playing in the

Final and the Under 14’s finished in 12th position. Again, it was the lack of batting ability that made

things so tough – of the three Squads only three players scored more than 100 runs: James Vela –

148, Gordon Waterfall – 147 and Cameron Brown – 140. James scored a century, Gordon was most

consistent and scored one half-century while Cameron scored two half-centuries. Michael Edwards

was the only other player who managed a half-century. On the bowling-side, Adam McMaster

picked up 11 wickets.

While it does a tremendous amount of work with the Male Pathway, the Frankston Peninsula Cricket

Club has certainly reaped the rewards. In Season 2011/12, 60 players represented the Club –

42 from the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association;

6 from the West Gippsland Cricket Association –

o 80% in total from the two Associations;

34 players had represented the South East Country Region in the Pathway Program –

o 57% in total;

5 players had also represented the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club in the Dowling Shield

competition, previous to the inception of the Pathway –

Of the 13 players who represented FPCC during the season who did not play in either the

MPCA or WGCA, five had previously represented other Clubs / Regions in the Dowling Shield

/ Pathway Program.

Interestingly, two players who did not play in the Pathway Program or Dowling Shield, are Nick

Jewell and Scott Boland. Both are living proof that you don’t have to go through the Pathway to

achieve success in the game.

Frankston peninsula cricket CLUB

junior scholarship

The Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club Junior Scholarship for Season 2011/2012

was awarded to Jake Wood. Jake had a steady Under 16 carnival where he

captured 6 wickets from his 35 overs. However his outstanding efforts with his

opening 11 matches for Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club made him a standout

contender for this scholarship. Jake took 31 wickets for the club at an amazing

average of just 10.77 with best figures of 4/13, taking him to equal runner up in

the Thompson Medal. He anchored the bowling attack in the victorious 4th XI

One Day Premiership Side, and looked comfortable when promoted, taking

3/26 in his 3rd XI debut. This scholarship will provide Jake with complimentary

membership and merchandise for the 2012/2013 season, where Jake will look to press for further

senior opportunities at FPCC and play a key role in the South East Country Sharks Under 18 side.

Bill foley education

& cricket scholarship

The Bill Foley Education and Cricket Scholarship perpetuates the memory of Bill Foley, long-time stalwart of the Cricket community throughout the State of Victoria and in particular in Cricket Administration with the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association, the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club and the South East Country Region. Bill was President of the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club when he died in September 2007 at the age of 72. Amongst Bill's passions were the value of cricket and education in building young peoples’ opportunities in life and a value base to become engaged participants in the community. The Scholarship, valued at $10,000 a year, assists aspiring young cricketers under the age of 21 years with their cricket and education costs. Previous recipients of the scholarship include Glyn Trueman (2009), Kierran Voelkl (2010) and Mitchell Drummond (2011).

At the Premier Final on March 31 in front of a large gathering, including CV President, CV Board Members, CV CEO Tony Dodemaide, former CA & ICC chairman Malcolm Grey, Frankston Peninsula captain Matthew Chasemore and family, 2011 recipient Mitch Drummond, along with Foley Family members who had travelled long distances to attend the announcement made by Bill Foley's daughter Carolyn, Frankston Peninsula batsman Sean Wilson was announced as the recipient of the scholarship for the 2012 academic year. Following an extensive process which included written applications in December, initial interviews in January and final interviews in February, Sean was selected ahead of the other shortlisted candidates. Sean had a break out season with Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club in season 2011/2012. After blasting 207 runs from his first four 2nd XI matches this season as an opening batsman, Sean earned selection in four 1st XI matches. On debut against Ringwood, Sean showed his trademark style to dispatch the opening bowlers to all areas of the ground, scoring 29 off 20 balls with 6 fours to get the successful run chase on track.

In keeping with Bill’s philosophy, the Scholarship holder will be of good character, be an aspiring cricketer with development potential who plays in accordance with the “spirit of the game”, have cricketing links to the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club and/or the South East Country Region and be undertaking or have made a binding commitment to a suitable post-secondary education undertaking – whether as a Vocational or Academic pursuit.

Peninsula t20 challenge

Frankston Peninsula Heat proved too strong in the annual Twenty20 clash with Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association at AH Butler Oval on January 29, with former skipper Nick Jewell the man of the moment. Jewell opened the batting for the Heat and combined with Sean Wilson for an 81-run opening stand, which came off just 51 balls. Jewell hammered 57 with three fours and four sixes in his majestic knock while Wilson hit four fours and two sixes in his solid 37. The Heat finished with 4-171 and in reply the MPCA was bowled out for 147. Moorooduc ace Bobby Wilson was the best MPCA batsman with a rapid-fire 73. But the match winner for Frankston Peninsula was Chris Dew, who snared 6-20, further pushing his claim for a regular senior position after claiming the man of the match award. In the under-18s match MPCA defeated the Heat. After winning the toss MPCA finished 4-135 after recovering from 3-58 in the 13th over. MPCA's Kristian Miller was the hero, smashing 54 off 27 balls to earn man of the match honours. The Heat finished 8-105 off its 20 overs with Nathan Cassano (31) and Jake Bardwell (20 not out) the pick of the batsmen.
