PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Season 2014-15 was one of consolidation and future planning for our Club, albeit a number of challenges continue to confront us both on field and off. The sustainability of any elite Cricket Club is reliant on its number of volunteers and the ability to develop and sustain strong income streams. We have a dedicated core group of volunteers who work in a committed manner to ensure the Club functions at a level expected. However the gradual erosion of available volunteers, in recent years, has had a major cost impact on the operation of our Club. The Board will continue to develop strategies for the recruitment and task sharing for volunteers that will offset workloads of a dedicated few. While I continue raise the matter, it is now considered a threat to our basic service provision to the cricket operations.

Regretfully there appears a perception that Premier Cricket can afford paid employees to undertake many of the tasks required to function, it’s not the case. As a Club we obviously need to deliver this message better. The Club continues to be financially viable to an operation level, generating sufficient turnover to support, professional coaches, playing overheads, eg cricket balls, umpires, pre-season venues, Council fees, Clubhouse operation overheads etc. However for us to continually improve our amenities and develop players for both Premier Cricket and First Class Cricket, the Board believes we need to further explore and develop our income streams to ensure we remain competitive in all aspects of our operation. I reiterate my comments from previous reports that rather than carry a significant surplus the decision to responsibly invest in our future players via the assembled coaches is a direction the Board is strongly committed too. However with operational overheads continuing to increase and other income streams stabilising there may need to be a review of the extent to which the Board commits to this policy going forward. Coaching and player payments are a growth industry, while some Clubs have lived beyond their means and are now suffering. We would be irresponsible to head down this path, it is therefore extremely important for our Club to “live within our means”, and to develop strategies that considers how we can continue to grow in the future. After many years as a development coach having responsibility for assembling most of our playing list, I believe Dave McClean had earned a shot at the “big time” after coming off the bench the previous season. The Board felt continuality was essential, while ‘Macca’ would admit there were some challenges along the way, he leaves our playing list is in an excellent state to progress. On behalf of the Board I thank him for his commitment & passion to the role.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 4 Annual Report 2014-2015

Having teams competing for finals spots, supports the strong view that we continue to develop talented players creating depth for our Club, also providing career pathways to both Premier cricket and associated elite levels of our sport. It has been a strength of our Club and will continue to be a focus going forward. Governance I acknowledge and thank the dedicated group that forms the Board of Management, we have had stable, proactive and supportive Board that continues to provide leadership through innovation, forward planning, as well as strategic vision that will ensure our Club continues to provide a regional pathway to Premier and first class cricket. I commend the efforts of our home bred General Manager Glenn Davey for his due diligence across our governance operations, putting in many hours above and beyond expectations. While Glenn has resigned from the position, his legacy of well-developed operation systems and management practices provide an excellent professional environment for our club. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of Jason Wylie, as a player, 3rd XI Captain and Board member over many years. Jason has advised he will not continue his Cricket with us; we thank him for his dedicated efforts and hope he will return in the not too distant future. Cricket Victoria The challenges for the sport of Cricket are ongoing, particularly in areas such as, participation, ground availability, and ongoing volunteer involvement. T20 is seen as the catalyst and the spark for introducing cricket to a whole new generation. It is considered imperative to the games future for holding ground in the sporting market place. The success and continued growth of the BBL competition reinforces Cricket’s place on the summer calendar. Volunteers I particularly acknowledge and thank those people who took on the mighty challenge of managing the canteen operations, ensuring we stayed at the top of the ladder for service provision to our loyal group of supporters and visitors. The canteen operations were driven by Noellene McClean and her astute management skills and dedicated work ethic. However the future sustainability of the canteen will depend on further volunteer resources assisting throughout the season. Congratulations to all players and volunteers acknowledged at the presentation night for 2014/15. A special thank you also to the dynamic Thursday night meals team lead by Noellene McClean and Jess Dunkling with an able supporting group providing a variety of meals for our enjoyment each selection night – this is a great tradition and appreciated by all. Another season of the “Heat in the Kitchen” luncheons was successfully driven by Mark Dunsford, even while the fixture didn’t best suit us this season. I again thank Mark for his efforts in establishing a significant supporter data base and a successful series of lunches and outstanding guest speakers.

Local Government Frankston Council provides a strong commitment to elite club sport in the municipality, we have benefitted greatly from this over our time in Premier Cricket. Butler Oval continues to improve from major improvements during the last season with complete drainage being installed and both the centre and practice wicket tables being refurbished. I acknowledge the commitment of Council Officers and their support for the improvement works that will benefit us greatly. Sponsorship Thank you to our major sponsor BUILDSAFE, Phil Graf and his team are fantastic supporters of our Club over a long period; we express the Board’s gratitude for his continued support. The Frankston RSL, have also been long term partners supporting our Club over our journey. Mark Dunsford, Dunsford Financial Planning, Martin Scanlon, Scanlon Property are all special sponsor partners and we appreciate their ongoing involvement. To all our players, loyal volunteers, members and sponsors I particularly, on behalf of the Board, wish to thank you for your continued support throughout the seasons. Your support is the very foundation from which we can better prepare to take on the challenges ahead that will make us a successful and sustainable Premier Cricket Club. Accepting our responsibility as a Premier Club in the region and the development and support of pathway squads is vitally important to our sustainability in Premier cricket. The strength of our ongoing partnership with local associations is imperative with support from Cricket Victoria and the Regional Cricket Manager, Jason Mathers, ensures a well-coordinated program for young aspiring cricketers to reach their potential. To the entire pathway support groups coaches, managers and scorers’ thank you for providing much needed support and direction. I also acknowledge the role that many parents play providing background support, guidance and for the manner in which many have embraced the “Heat” as their Club.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 6 Annual Report 2014-2015

GENERal maNaGER’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I submit Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Annual Report for Season 2014/2015. The process of compiling the Annual Report (my fifth report) provides a great opportunity to assemble a record of the achievements and records of the club from the recent season. Personally, I have completed my fourth and final year in this role. Combining this ever expanding position with full time work responsibilities and a young adorable family became too great a challenge. In order focus on my family and career and to preserve my health (which showed signs of failing when I contracted pneumonia in February), I made the difficult decision to step down at the end of April.

I congratulate Kevin Johnson on his appointment as General Manager effective from 1 May 2015. A former player of the club, Kevin brings a vast range of sporting and professional experience to the role. He has a strong involvement in many local ventures including the Proudly Frankston group and will introduce a range of new networks to the club. With Kevin stepping into the position, the club will now receive the dedicated management attention that I would’ve been unable to provide if I continued in the role. Since taking over from the administration legend that is Wayne Ross in 2011, I have taken pride in implementing a significant amount of initiatives that helped to improve the club in various forms. These have included:

A complete redesign of the club website,

Growing the social media presence of the club to the point that we now have over 2,500 followers,

Generating frequent online content such as news stories on players or matches to enhance exposure of the club and build the brand,

Designing and implementing a complete new range of player apparel, which rivals the standards delivered in first class cricket,

Creating an automated online apparel ordering process,

Designing, producing and maintaining a variety of new external and internal sponsor signage,

Many manual hours of labour to upgrade the unsafe practice wickets with new netting,

Producing a series of interactive and entertaining visual displays for the electronic scoreboard,

Implementing online live scoring and regular score updates through social media,

The production of frames and collages to present to players at milestones, retirements or special occasions,

Maintaining and displaying a huge database of player images from the last five years,

Maintaining picture displays for the club rooms including state representatives. It has been great to work with so many dedicated board members, volunteers, players and supporters who are all striving to make the club the best place it can be. This role is dependent on people to help and volunteer to avoid every task falling back on the employed General Manager. There has been significant volunteer assistance over the past four years to help me. However, we could always do with more volunteers, and as a consequence, very early mornings, very late nights, and complete exhaustion was common for me to experience in summer as all of the little things that didn’t get done had to be completed. I must commend the valuable contribution from our President, Dennis Prendergast. He puts so much time into our club, managing many key relationships with our important stakeholders. He is talented in people

Page 7: FRANKSTON PENINSULA CRICKET CLUB · 2015. 8. 17. · Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 3 Annual Report 2014-2015 EIDE’ E Season 2014-15 was one of consolidation and future planning

management, but he is also very willing to roll up the sleeves and make salad rolls for the canteen, or stock the bar in the freezing cool room, or put up the shade sail, or paint the lines. To have such a hands on President is something our members should never take for granted. I will remain with the club that I have served since its inception into Premier Cricket in 1993. After 8 years on the manual scoreboard as a child, I have now scored 223 matches for the club, with 23 more 1st XI matches required before I join Darren Groves, Luke Walker, James Miller and David Nankervis in the CV 200 Club! I will also continue to serve the club as Treasurer for my 7th year in the role. So I will still be around the club – but maybe not every training night, or every pathways match, or at 7am on match days to do the covers, and not at 1am to lock up! Thank you to my wife Jo for all of her amazing support. Administration As in previous years, Cricket Victoria provided funds and assistance to enable the Club to manage its administration responsibilities in accordance with Cricket Victoria’s Criteria Assessment for all Premier Cricket Clubs. Cricket Victoria’s support is greatly appreciated. Playing David McClean continued in the Director of Coaching role. He added a talented team of coaches to support the playing group including Keith Jansz (returning to the club after a previous stint as coach), Darren Groves, Tim Spear, Sam Gill and Mark O’Sullivan. Scott Boland was appointed as 1st XI captain, a great story to recognize his transformation from local cricketer to First Class cricketer. Scott was supported by Michael McClean and Matthew Gapes when playing for Victoria and Melbourne Stars. Coen Chernishoff played a brilliant unselfish role to captain the 2nd XI all season. Jason Wylie again led the 3rd XI superbly, earning a home Quarter Final after finishing third on the ladder. Simon Draycott was an excellent addition to captain the 4th XI, using all of his experience from his premierships at Camberwell Magpies to mentor our young players starting off in Premier Cricket. The season contained various individual highlights such as commanding centuries to Paul Borrington, Justin Grant and Gordon Waterfall. Borrington was a very useful acquisition, transferring his knowledge and experience onto the playing group after his decade spent playing County Cricket for Derbyshire. He was such a calming top order presence, and the integration into club life with partner Jess Dunkling was great to see. Luke Walker continued his stellar Premier Cricket career in style, notching five half centuries in a very consistent year that saw him receive another batting award and club champion award. Luke is an extremely loyal player, with the club’s best interests always in the front of his mind. He provided significant leadership to the emerging senior players, and was respectfully acknowledged with a celebration held following his milestone of 200 1st XI matches. Ben Ashkenazi, Jake Wood and Jackson Mockett all showed exciting signs of what the future holds for this fast bowling combination. Jake and Ben carried the workload manfully in the 1st XI, handling the pressure with maturity beyond their years. With so much higher honours representative matches already under their belt, we look forward for even greater things to come. Gordon Waterfall emerged this season with the bat, stepping up to become a key top order batsman in the 2nd XI. Combining with another solid year with Coen Chernishoff at the top of the order, the 2nd XI were quite unlucky to fall less than a game out of the top eight, unfortunately just like multiple recent seasons. The 3rd XI was dominated by Tim Drummond, who had an amazing season with both bat and ball to help steer the side into the top four on the ladder. The 3rd XI had a very imposing bowling attack, with Tim Drummond, Niall Young, Aaron McIlroy and Billy Humphrey setting up many of their victories. The 4th XI started the year with 11 new players, forcing them to learn quickly to adapt to turf cricket and gel as a team. Although they could only secure four wins, there was plenty of talent on show for the future. Nick Mann and Leon Davis had terrific seasons after backing up for their second year at the club,

while Mitch Allen, Jared Gibbs, Jack Lavery and Mitch Skvor all showed positive signs towards a great Premier Career at FPCC. Congratulations to all award winners from the Presentation Night, in particular to Chris McCormick who won his first Thompson Medal after a very consistent season. Chris is a long serving playing who also contributes in an important role on the Board. The club was honoured to receive the Spirit of Cricket award, which I believe reflects the positive environment generated by all members and volunteers, not just the outstanding onfield conduct of the captains and players. Overall, all teams were quite competitive across most rounds to be in with a chance to win the majority of matches. With the experience gained for many of the new young players this season, hopefully the overall club winning percentage will lift from 44% in 2014/15. Arrivals The club secured the addition of the following players to the senior list for Season 2014/2015: Mitchell Allen (Carrum), Jack Birthisel (Baden Powell), Nick Boland (Parkdale), Paul Borrington (Derbyshire, UK), Simon Draycott (Camberwell Magpies), Euan Fox (Mt Eliza), Jared Gibbs (Main Ridge), Justin Grant (Mt Eliza), Nathan Hibbins (Casey South Melbourne), Liam Jackson (Baden Powell), James La Brooy (POB), Jack Lavery (Heatherhill), Ben Lawrence (Seaford), Mitch Skvor (Balnarring), Matt Stonier (Newport), Brodie Symons (Mornington), Brad Trotter (Pearcedale), Spencer Wilton (Balnarring), Niall Young (Somerville). Departures Players who left the club following the 2013/2014 season included: Brad Baptist, Simon Black, Ryan Brett, Cameron Chasemore, Matthew Chasemore, Michael De Iacovo, Jarratt Eastburn, Tom Feldgen, Jayde Herrick, Blake Hogan-Keogh, Brad McDonald, David Nankervis, Peter Sofra, Jye Voelkl, Kierran Voelkl. Thank you to these players for their service to Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club, in particular to Life Member David Nankervis who contributed significantly to the 1st XI over many years for 210 1st XI matches. Volunteers There are a significant amount of volunteers within the Club who deserve recognition for their contributions. Thanks must go to all of the coaches led by David McClean, Ian Boldiston (Training and Matchday Setup), Brian Nankervis (Photographer), Martin Wylie (Team Manager, Scorer), Ivan Ashkenazi (Team Manager), Wayne Ross (Scorer), Matt Davis (Scorer), Graeme Brewer (Matchday Assistance), Jannine Reid (Afternoon Tea, Scorer), Bill Chernishoff (Scorer), John Trueman (Scorer), Graeme Gibbs (Scorer), Nick Salerni (Team Manager), Jason Wylie (Team Manager and Fundraising Co-ordinator), David Archer (Afternoon Tea), James Keenan (Afternoon Tea), Noellene McClean (Meals, Canteen, Afternoon Tea), Sarah Walker (Meals, Canteen, Afternoon Tea), Jess Dunkling (Meals, Canteen, Afternoon Tea), David Brissett (Afternoon Tea), Brendan & Raelene Lavery. Thank you must also go to Gary Woolard, Gavin Bock, Chris Cay, Phil Regos and Steve from Frankston City Council from their efforts in maintaining the high standards of the Jubilee Park precinct. Board of Management Finally, recognition should be provided to the hard working FPCC Board of Management which included throughout the year: Dennis Prendergast (President), David Archer (Vice President), James Keenan (Vice President), Glenn Davey (Treasurer), Ivan Ashkenazi (Secretary), Glen Elmi, Chris McCormick and Jason Wylie. Personally, it has been a pleasure to work with a great team in pushing the Club forward.

COaCh’S REPORT

Season 2014/15 was a year in which we decided to be competitive, get first eleven games into players whilst making them earn it but backing them to give it a chance to work. Twenty-two different players represented our first eleven this season under three different captains. We won five games across all three formats and once again put ourselves in winning positions on five other occasions only to make crucial mistakes at the wrong time. Overall our results were not good enough from a club that boasts a talented playing list. Having said all that I am extremely proud of this group and expect them all to learn from the year and become better players.

The second eleven were led by a young man in Coen Chernishoff who was surrounded by more young men who eventually found their feet and went on a late winning spree and just fell short of making finals. The thirds had a really steady season and were again well led by club stalwart Jase Wylie. They finished the home and away season in third place, their finals campaign was again cut short by poor batting and they were left to wonder what could have been. Our fourth eleven was led by Simon Draycott in his first season with us and he can be proud of his season with a very young and inexperienced group. Overall the season did not have brilliant results, no thousand runs from a batsman, no fifty wickets from a bowler but what we did achieve was getting games into twenty-two different players in the first eleven, improve our fielding to be able to match or better most other clubs and recruit a lot of very talented cricketers. We also proved beyond a doubt what we are capable of doing if we have a lot of contributors in a match (such as smashing Melbourne)! I would like to finish by saying what an honour it was coaching this club for the past two seasons and I would like to thank all the players for their support, special thanks to all my captains. I would also like to thank my support staff for their wonderful work last year Sam Gill, Tim Spear, Darren Groves, Keith Jansz and Mark O’Sullivan. To my two bosses Dennis Prendergast and Glenn Davey, thanks lads for all your support it was great working with you both, thanks to all our wonderful volunteers and sponsors without whom we would not survive. I look forward to the new season and cannot wait till October, good luck to all the new coaching staff, I know Frankston Peninsula is in good hands. GO HEAT!

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 10 Annual Report 2014-2015

Finance

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club realised an unaudited (at time of printing) net loss of ($1,272) for Season 2014/2015 compared to a slightly lower net loss of ($522) in Season 2013/2014. The financial information is based on accrual accounting, is exclusive of GST, and includes non-cash transactions such as depreciation and adjustments. To expand, $13,619 of the listed income was still receivable at 30 April 2015, while $10,110 of the listed expenditure was still payable at 30 April 2015. When non-cash accounting items (depreciation and inventory adjustments) are disregarded, the actual Operating Profit sits at a very pleasing $8,463. The following explanations are provided for clarification of the result in some areas.

Income: Cricket Victoria As per other seasons, assistance from Cricket Victoria in the form of Distributions, Internet Grant, and Administration Manager Grants is greatly appreciated. A $5,000 bonus from the success of the Melbourne BBL teams was also distributed to all Premier Clubs. Cricket Victoria also assisted in reimbursing costs incurred to host Country Week matches and the 3rd XI Quarter Final. In respect to the loan with Cricket Victoria for their contribution to the electronic scoreboard, the first five repayments ($25,000 combined) have been made, to reduce the outstanding balance from $35,000 to $10,000. Within two years, the electronic scoreboard will be completely paid for. Bar, Canteen and Selection Night Meals. An increase in external hirers and player social events saw bar sales increase by 65% back to the normal levels seen in 2012/13. The increase in external hirers could somewhat be attributed to the aggressively competitive pricing structure that the board courageously undertook. As a consequence, the bar staff and bar stock expense correspondingly increased to reflect the increase bar activity. Dennis Prendergast, Noellene McClean, James Keenan, David Archer, Jess Dunkling and Sarah Walker all combined to ensure the canteen made a small profit, with the revenue received in the canteen sufficient enough to allow sandwiches, rolls, cakes and cordial to be provided for player afternoon teas free of charge. The canteen certainly struggled for volunteers and was not open for the hours it has traditionally operated. This has caused revenue to fall from $17,573 in 2011/12 to just $6,519 in 2014/15. This demonstrates a huge revenue opportunity for the club should willing volunteers come forward to assist. Noellene also did an amazing job to co-ordinate the Selection Night Meals, making a profit for the club of $2,795 after boosting sales by a wonderful 38%. Membership We again thank the playing group considerably for their strong support of their club through the current membership structure, first implemented at the 2009 AGM. I encourage supporters to strongly consider becoming a social member to further support your Club financially. Playing memberships will remain at $450 for the upcoming season as agreed at the 2013/14 AGM. Social During Season 2014/2015, the Club continued “Heat in the Kitchen”, a series of luncheons which included fine dining, guest speakers and the opportunity to reminisce with past and present friends and family. The two lunches were well attended, with Simon Helmot and Rodney Hogg very entertaining guest speakers. These events also provide a valuable opportunity to entertain our sponsors and members. The club also participated in the Lords Taverners Raffle, selling many tickets to receive valuable fundraising commission. This replaced the $5000 Draw held in prior years.

Sponsorship We are grateful to continue to receive wonderful support from our sponsors, in particular: Buildsafe Building Insurances (Phil Graf), Frankston RSL (Rob Morrison), Dunsford Financial Planning (Mark Dunsford), Scanlon Property (Martin Scanlon), Saxon Sports Frankston (Chris Hall), along with this fantastic group of new sponsors including Core Gym (Joe Russo), Kookaburra Sport (Nathan Pilon), Titanic Transport (Keith Erasmus), Brendan Lavery Plumbing (Brendan Lavery), Paringa Estate Winery (Lindsay McCall), Behaviours at Work (Dale Wiese), Girl Friday VA Solutions (Jo Davey), The Pantry House (Glen Elmi). Thank you to Mark Dunsford who plays a key role on behalf of the club in generating and maintaining positive relationships with new and existing sponsors.

Expenditure: Facility As expected with the quality of facility the Club has access to, there is a considerable amount of expenditure to maintain its presentation and operations such as cleaning costs of $1,827 and materials & repairs of $1,217. Following the renegotiated energy deal signed with Blue NRG, the club has further reduced our energy costs to now be $5,095 for last season – considerably lower than the cost in 2012/13 of $9,166. Grounds Ground rental fees payable to the Frankston City Council for the A.H. Butler Oval and Eastern Oval increased slightly to $9,711. Our Ground related expenditure included purchasing paint for the line marker, along with a temporary upgrade to the training nets of $2,461 to spend some of the BBL bonus received from Cricket Victoria and help make the nets more safe for players and residents. Merchandise $7,540 worth of current merchandise purchases and cricket balls remain on hand. The Board implemented a new range of clothing designs by Kukri in the 2013/2014 season. This transition saw the merchandise expenditure and in turn merchandise sales dramatically increase as all players obtained a new range of apparel. Last season the merchandise sales and purchases returned to normal levels as most orders were just for new players. Playing The Club employed David McClean, Keith Jansz, Darren Groves, Tim Spear, Paul Borrington, Sam Gill and Mark O’Sullivan in various coaching and advisory roles in 2014/15. Further, indoor practice, facility hire and cricket equipment costs (such as match balls, training balls, ice and training aides) combined to $14,328 to outline the significant investment by the club in playing resources. Travel and Accommodation costs related to the Bush Bash fixture in Ballarat, were reimbursed by Cricket Victoria.

Summary: As always, the Club finances remain very delicately balanced, with the usual annual process of entering into overdraft occurring again in the lead up to Season 2015/2016. The turnaround in trends for sponsorship, bar sales, selection night meals and facility hire were pleasing. The Board will continue to conservatively manage the finances, and look at revenue growth opportunities to allow further cricket investment and to also ease the financial pressure regularly experienced each winter.

Once again, the Club was at the forefront of Cricket Victoria’s Pathways Program in respect of the South East Country Region. In August, the Club hosted the Regional Pathways Information Session and again it was standing room only with around 200 (prospective players and their parents) in attendance. Dav Whatmore was a very informative guest speaker. From September until the end of December, the Club provided training facilities for each of the Squads to utilize.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 35 Annual Report 2014-2015

Luke Walker joins cv 200 club By Simon Draycott, November 2014 With Luke Walker approaching the 200 game milestone in both Premier Cricket and the AFL, he took time to look back in this interview for the FPCC website. While most people prepared for the 2014 AFL grand final at the local bottle shop, goal umpire Luke Walker was going through his usual routine in anticipation for his 6th consecutive grand final. “You try to keep the day as normal as possible; you try to get to the game at the same time, wake up at the same time and go through your normal routine.” “It’s fantastic being involved in the day. It’s the culmination of a long week. You find out Monday that you’ve got the game, we train on the MCG on the Thursday and the grand final parade on Friday is exciting.” Walker’s umpiring career started in 1998 in the Mornington Peninsula Football League when a mate from school suggested he could earn a bit of pocket money and not have to run the kilometres the field and boundary umpires did. His talents were quickly recognised and he was promoted to the Victorian Football League and then the AFL in 2004. His hard work paying off when selected for his first AFL grand final in 2010. “Getting the first [AFL] grand final was a reward for the work over a number of years and from then on it’s more a reward for the work you’ve done throughout the season.” “It’s an accomplishment for me to say I represent my group and my peers; that’s what gives me a drive to succeed.” Walker’s first grand final as an umpire turned out to be just the second drawn grand final in the history of the sport. “It was a bit of a strange feeling. We weren’t sure how everyone was going to react. The crowd went silent and the players dropped to the ground basically through exhaustion, however once the siren went we had to carry out our duties and make sure everything was correct.” “Once we left the ground that night we knew we still had a job to do the following week.” The replay the next week provided one of the great grand final highlights in recent memory. Collingwood’s Heath Shaw snuck up on St Kilda’s Nick Riewoldt saving a certain goal in what has been dubbed the ‘smother of the century’. Walker was lucky enough to be just meters away when the incident happened.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 36 Annual Report 2014-2015

“I think that’s it”, he says when asked about the most memorable moment in the 199 matches he’s umpired so far. “Going into the grand final I hoped I’d have a great goal kicked at my end or a great mark or something like that so you can show the kids and the grandkids that you were there for that moment.” “I feel lucky to not only be doing the grand final but also be there for that point in time and make the right call.” One of the major talking points throughout the 2014 season was the goal review system. Many commentators including the ABC’s Gerard Whateley were critical, imploring the AFL to improve the technology or scrap the system all together. Walker however thinks the system is a good thing. “[It’s] another tool to help us get the score right.” “I’m happy with how it is at the moment but if it’s refined and made better then all good. Obviously the technology isn’t perfect at the moment but it’s there to help us make the right call.” Walker’s achievements as an umpire speak for themselves. 199 matches, six grand finals, the most final appearances for a goal umpire (30), All-Australian, International rules series and AFLUA life membership. “[The records are] good to have against your name; over the course of time they’re all going to be broken.” “Hopefully you’ll be remembered not as a record holder but more as a hard worker and someone who prepared well.” I spoke to Walker about his umpiring in the social rooms of Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club. Behind us on the wall is the honour board, littered with the name L. Walker for many feats including club champion, club captain, batting awards and life member. Cricket and Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club has always been a big part of Walker’s life. He followed his dad and three older brothers to the club as he looked up to them when he was younger. “[The cricket club] is like a second home. I’ve had family play here so I grew up through the club. I don’t really think about playing anywhere else or when I’m going to come back it’s just an automatic thing that I keep coming back.” The 2010/11 season was one of heartbreak for Walker, as the 1st XI lost a thrilling final to a strong Dandenong side consisting of test players Peter Siddle, James Pattinson and Darren Pattinson. “I still look back I think once a week and think what could’ve been in that final. So close yet so far away.”

“We faced 3 bowlers who had played test cricket; you think how lucky you were to test your skills against those guys on that particular occasion.” Although in the latter stages of his cricket career, Walker isn’t done just yet. “When I can no longer hold a spot in the 1st XI I’ll look to take up a lesser role in the club like captaining a lower XI or coaching.” “I feel a responsibility to impart knowledge, it’s something I think I can offer the young guys. Although I don’t proclaim to know everything, there are a few things I know and can pass onto the young boys.” Walker is yet to put a retirement date on both endeavours.

“Cricket is a year by year case. The footy isn’t as physically taxing on the body but I’ve always lived an hour away from training, so at some point with a young family the travel will take its toll.” “Hopefully I can pull up stumps when I’m still performing to the level required rather than being pushed out the door.”
