The Festival

Premiering Sydney is a festival combining exhilaration, musical integrity and exchanges with other fine musicians. • Individual performance on the Sydney Opera House stage • Your participation in the world premiere of a piece for massed band commissioned from Frank Ticheli • Work with the finest Australian and US clinicians and educators led by Professor Matthew George, Artistic Director

The Sydney Opera House Concert Hall stage has to be experienced to be believed. To perform on this stage is a moment never forgotten. The sails soar from the sparkling harbor. The thrill of a responsive audience in this arresting hall will last a lifetime.

The Composer Frank Ticheli has been commissioned to write the World Premiere piece for the Festival Massed Band to perform. Internationally-renowned composer Frank Ticheli has been commissioned by major orchestras and bands throughout the world. Awards for his music include those given from the Academy of Arts and Letters among others. His music has been recorded on the Albany, Chandos, Clarion, Klavier, Koch International, and Mark Records labels.

The Artistic Director Matthew George is Premiering Sydney’s Artistic Director. Dr George is Professor of Music, Chair of the Department of Music and Director of Bands at the University of St Thomas in Minneapolis. Professor George serves as the President of North Central Division of CBDNA.

The 2006 inaugural festival Premiering Sydney was inaugurated in July 2006. It culminated in the massed world premiere performance of David Gillingham’s Sails of Time at the Sydney Opera House. This great work was a resounding success and has established Premiering Sydney as the premier international band festival in Sydney. In addition to performing in the massed work, the bands enjoyed an individual performance program in Australia and New Zealand. The organizers Kingsway International has a great history of creating some of the finest performance festivals and performance tours throughout the world, especially for gifted musical ensembles from North America. Highly successful festivals have been held in the Sydney Opera House for several summers, and while in Australia visiting ensembles have also had the opportunity to perform elsewhere, often alongside talented Australian singers. Present Australia New Zealand designed Premiering Sydney to present a new opportunity for bands in mass formation. For over 16 years, the team at Present Australia has been staging fine visiting musical groups throughout Australia as well as introducing its guests to this great island continent. With a 50,000 year history, Australia is a land of mystery yet familiarity of warmth and mateship as well as stunning natural beauty. Additionally, New Zealand boast some of the most glorious and diverse scenery on the planet. Present Australia New Zealand is unique in being able to blend the performance, sightseeing and interactive aspects of your visit.

Touchdown Sydney, Australia Sydney is a great cosmopolitan city. It is sophisticated, full of adventure, boasting a glorious harbor, sunny beaches, a superb climate and friendly people. Your Australian coordinator will guide you to your coaches. We depart for a half-day city sights tour of Sydney. First stop should be picturesque Watson's Bay, located at the entrance to Sydney Harbor. Here you experience breathtaking views of the harbor and ocean. Further down the coastline, we stop for lunch (at own expense) at the famed Bondi Beach with its great cafes and restaurants in what used to be the city's bohemian quarter. We then proceed to Mrs. Macquarie's Chair for spectacular views of the famous Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge and one of the classic Sydney photo opportunities. We transfer to the hotel and check in. Dinner is provided

Thursday, July 3 Clinic and Australian Animals (B/D)

Enjoy hot and cold buffet style Breakfast at the hotel This morning after breakfast, we transfer to a venue for clinics. Meet the Artistic Director and composer. Lunch own arrangement. This afternoon we visit Featherdale Wildlife Park where you come face to face with Australian native animals including kangaroos and koalas. We then transfer back to Sydney, stopping at a Sydney restaurant for dinner before you return to the hotel.

Friday, July 4 The Rocks and Mass Rehearsal (B/D)

Breakfast. A morning of Rocks. Firstly we get a sense of the vastness of Australia and its great outback when we visit Australia’s Opal Discovery Centre. Nearly all the world’s opals are mined in the remotest parts of Australia. You are greeted by one of the Costello dynasty – they have been mining, cutting and setting these unique Aussie marvels for 3 generations. See how they are mined and cut to uncover the brilliant colors within. We then visit the The Rocks district. Step into Australia’s convict past and wander through narrow winding cobblestone alleys sensing what the convicts must have endured when they were first transported to Sydney as prisoners. You have free time shop and explore and to buy your own lunch. Transfer to the jetty where we board a luxurious vessel for a Sydney Harbor Cruise. Absorb the magnificent sights of the Harbor Bridge, the Opera House and the wonder of this spectacular living harbor. We then transfer to the venue for the first massed rehearsal with your Artistic Director and composer in preparation for the Premiering Sydney 2008 Festival Gala Concert. Following the rehearsal, enjoy a welcome dinner party with other participants in the Festival. Return to hotel

Saturday, July 5 Massed Rehearsal and Individual Band Performance (B/D)

Enjoy buffet style breakfast at your hotel restaurant This morning we depart the hotel and transfer to the rehearsal venue for your second massed rehearsal of the specially commissioned Festival piece. Lunch is at own arrangement This afternoon after lunch there are opportunities for individual performance. We transfer to a restaurant for dinner Return to hotel.

Sunday, July 6 Sydney Opera House (B/D)

This morning enjoy hot and cold buffet style breakfast Depart the hotel and transfer to the Sydney Opera House. Move to the Concert Hall for set up and dress rehearsal. There is time to purchase lunch before the concert. The Gala Concert in the Concert Hall features the massed world premiere performance of Frank Ticheli’s composition and individual performances. Dinner in the Green Room. Return to our hotel.

Monday, July 7 Transfer to Melbourne (B/D)

Following breakfast we then pack and check out of the hotel and head to the airport. It's time to say goodbye to Sydney as we fly to Melbourne. From the airport we depart for a half-day city orientation sightseeing tour of Melbourne. Visit Melbourne Observation Deck which offers 360 degree panoramic views of Melbourne and its surrounds - as far as the Dandenong Ranges to the east, Geelong to the west and most of Port Phillip Bay. Rialto Towers is the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. We then transfer to Southgate located on the south bank of the famous Yarra River. The river is lined with cafes, restaurants and a food court to buy your own lunch. We transfer to our hotel and check in. Dinner tonight is own arrangements.

Tuesday, July 8 Australian Farm and Penguins (B/L)

Today after breakfast we travel through the spectacular scenery of the Dandenong Ranges to Warrook Farm. Experience real country life on a working farm, handle animals, see how a farming family lives, and enjoy a home-cooked lunch in the historic homestead, be an “Aussie” farmer for a day! We then travel to Phillip Island and visit the Fairy Penguin Parade viewing area. Every night these birds swim ashore to roost. En route their waddling and on-shore antics delight and entertain. We then return to Melbourne, stopping for dinner at own arrangement en route.

Wednesday, July 9 Explore Melbourne and Performance (B/D)

Breakfast.

We set off from the hotel to explore the variety that is Melbourne. See Cathedrals, the Arts Centre, parks, beaches and shopping precincts. We have the chance to give a performance for Melbournians and possibly an exchange program. At the end of the day, we arrive at a local restaurant for our farewell dinner.

Thursday, July 10 Departure (B) Enjoy breakfast in the hotel.

Sadly this morning we check out of the hotel and make our way to the airport. It is time to leave Australia taking many wonderful memories of the Festival and the Land Down Under.

Monday, July 7 Transfer to Gold Coast (B/D)

Following breakfast we then pack and check out of the hotel and head to the airport. It's time to say goodbye to Sydney as we fly to Brisbane. Upon arrival we depart for sightseeing in Brisbane including a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens before traveling to South Bank Parklands, site of the 1988 World Expo for an opportunity to have lunch (own arrangements) by the man-made beach. We then drive 80 kilometers to the ocean at the Gold Coast. With long stretches as far as the eye can see of golden sandy beaches with clear blue water, this is the place to be if you like sun, surf and relaxation. Upon arrival at the hotel check in. Dinner tonight is provided.

Tuesday, July 8 Australian Animals and Scenery (B)

Following breakfast we depart for sightseeing tour along this famous beachside community. We head for Currumbin Sanctuary and the famous Rainbow Lorikeet feeding. These colorful birds fly into the vast sanctuary twice a day. Currumbin is located over 27 hectares with over a thousand mammals, birds and reptiles. See Australian native animals (including koalas and kangaroos) face to face in their natural surroundings. NB the visit to Featherdale in Sydney will be substituted with another activity in lieu of the visit to Currumbin) Lunch own arrangements at Currumbin Sanctuary. We then visit Tamborine Mountain. This is a lush 600 meter high plateau with spectacular waterfalls, great views, as well as breathtaking views of the Great Dividing Range. Return to hotel. Dinner own arrangements this evening

Wednesday, July 9 Theme Park and Sheep Farm (B/D)

Breakfast in the hotel. This morning we depart from the hotel and transfer to Seaworld theme park. See the sharks, dolphins, seals and even polar bears. Ride the corkscrew Roller Coaster, the Monorail, the Pirate Ship and Flume Ride. A day of water excitement awaits you. Lunch own arrangements at Seaworld. Late this afternoon we depart from Seaworld to visit Paradise Country Sheep Station and enjoy a tour of a genuine working property. Sample billy tea and hot damper bread fresh from the camp oven, see the sheep dogs at work and have a go at whip cracking and boomerang throwing. There is a BBQ dinner at the sheep station and a Bush Band Dance so your farewell night in Australia is unforgettable. We then return to our hotel.

Monday, July 7 Transfer to Auckland (B/D)

Breakfast is served in the hotel. We then pack and check out of the hotel and head to the airport. It's time to say goodbye to Sydney as we fly to Auckland. "Haere Mai" - Welcome to New Zealand. Regarded as a world in miniature, New Zealand is second to none in its complete contrast of scenic wonders; lakes and rivers, forests and national parks, many kilometers of both peaceful and rugged coastline, and magical thermal activity with geysers and boiling mud pools. From the airport we transfer to the hotel. Check in then free time. Dinner this evening is at a local restaurant.

Tuesday, July 8 Explore Auckland (B)

After breakfast at the hotel, we depart for a tour of this harborside city. We take in the spectacular views from the crater of the extinct volcano, Mount Eden standing 196 meters in height and providing panoramic views of the city and harbor. We continue on to the Domain Parks and Gardens. Lunch own arrangements. NZ and the US share a considerable presence in the Antarctic. We visit Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World - a complete marine and southern ocean experience. Begin with a step back in time to Captain Scott's hut in 1911. Then board your train for an exciting ride through the simulated Antarctic terrain and through Scott Base before entering the Original Underwater World. Here you travel on a moving walkway through an acrylic tunnel under the sea. View some of the 1500 species of marine life both big and small - sharks, stingrays and giant eels. Return to the hotel. Dinner tonight is own arrangements

Wednesday, July 9 Maori Culture Experience (B/D)

Following breakfast in the hotel we check out, and then depart for our scenic drive to Rotorua. As we approach Rotorua, notice that there is a scent of sulphur in the air. We arrive at the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute at Whakarewarewa. Set amidst a landscape of erupting geysers, hot thermal springs and bubbling mud pools, young Maoris are taught ancient Maori weaving and wood carving techniques and visitors are given a commentary as to how these skills fashion the end product. We move on to the dramatic Thermal Reserve where the earth's thermal core is just a heartbeat away. Molten lava below the earth's crust heats water, which explodes from the ground in incredible displays of power - one geyser shooting over 30 meters high. Lunch own arrangements. Transfer to the hotel and check in. This evening we transfer to a Maori Village. Indulge in a traditional hangi feast, where the food is cooked below the ground in earthen ovens, whilst enjoying a Maori cultural performance where stories are relayed through beautiful song and dance. Return to the hotel after the feast.

Thursday, July 10 Departure (B)

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel. It is then on to the Agrodome to see the Sheep Show and experience the Farm Tour of a genuine working property. See an exciting sheep auction with audience participation, a demonstration by working sheep dogs, a sheep shearing demonstration by a top shearer. You may even have an opportunity to hand milk a cow on stage or feed baby lambs. Lunch own arrangements. We depart Rotorua and make our way to Auckland airport. Sadly it is time to fly back home taking wonderful memories of Aotearoa – the Land of the Long White Cloud and the Land Down Under.

Monday, July 7 Transfer to Cairns (B/D)

Breakfast is served in the hotel. We then pack and check out of the hotel and head to the airport. It's time to say goodbye to Sydney as we fly to Cairns. Cairns is the gateway for two World Heritage listed sites: The Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Forest. These internationally renowned natural attractions are truly memorable and awe inspiring. Upon arrival, we board our coaches for an orientation tour of the city. Lunch own arrangements. Transfer to hotel and check in. Dinner at the hotel.

Tuesday, July 8 Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef (B/L)

Set off for a day immersed in the earth’s largest living organism and the only living entity that can be seen from space. Once we have arrived at our boarding point we ride out on a luxury catamaran to the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Everyone can snorkel and the equipment is included. Once in the water a new world is on view. A world of coral, of brightly colored fish and of a seabed teeming with life and movement. A naturalist can explain all that you see in this once in a lifetime experience. A tropical lunch is followed by more time in the water, a chance to ride on the glass bottomed boat or just time to enjoy the tropical warmth and fun. Return to Cairns. Dinner tonight is own arrangements

Wednesday, July 9 Rainforest and Tjapukai Aboriginal Culture Park(B/D)

Following Breakfast we depart the hotel in our coach and travel up the mountain through the Rainforest. We visit Rainforestation Nature Park. Travel onboard an Amphibious Army Duck through the magnificent tropical rainforest and learn about its ecosystem with an experienced guide who explains the vast array of flora and fauna. Then you meet Australian animals – up close and personal – including koalas, kangaroos, wombats and crocodiles. Note: the visit to Featherdale Wildlife Park in Sydney will be substituted for Rainforestation and another activity offered in Sydney. Transfer to Kuranda Village where you can get your own lunch. We then glide across the Rainforest canopy via Skyrail. This is a gondola cableway that travels over the treetops down the mountain revealing the sights, sounds and life that are the rainforest canopy. The ride itself is an exhilarating experience. We transfer to Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park where we come face to face with Aboriginal culture. Here you’ll learn the unique history of the original inhabitants of the land (who have been here for 50,000 years) through interpretive holograms and movies. You’ll even have time to view their traditional dance performance, try your hand at throwing a boomerang and spear and learn how to play the didgeridoo. Enjoy a spectacular evening show that includes your farewell dinner. We return to our hotel.
