Ashmann produced inf ront of the press a fe lse statement from an unnamed Cubananti-Communist organization which s ta ted tha t the e igh ta r res ted were innocent fishermen and were in no way respons ib l e for the captur ing of the two Cuban f ishing boats .Ashmann also produced fa l se rece ip t s which he obta inedfrom the owner of the East Coast Fisher ies Company MiamiFlor ida showing t ha t the eight were innocent fishermenwhose only a c t i v i t y was f i sh ing .

Shor t ly t h e r e a f t e r, the For t Lauderdale Dai lyNews ·opened a morning newspaper, the Sun-Sent ine l , tPompano Beach, Flor ida , and because the paper was i n d i r eneed o f repor te r s , BUCHANAN was h i red , al though a g a i n s t therecommendation of KELLY. BUCHANAN continued employmentwith the Sun-Sentinel u n t i l 2/64, t which time he began

the publ ica t ion of a small newspaper in Boca Raton, F l o r i d a ,and s t i l l wanted to main ta in his employment with theSun-Sentinel . Because of the con f l i c t of these two j ol:ls,

he was given a choice , and decided t h a t he would publ ishhis paper t Boca Raton. KELLY s a i d tha t t the timeBUCHANAN chose to leave his job with the Sun-Sentinel ,the management was on the verge of re leas ing him. Hr. KELLYexplained t h a t BUCHANAN i s a very s t range boy , who has agood mind, but could take o ff t any t ime. Hr. KELLYsa id tha t BUCHANAN, while employed t the Sun-Sentinelin approximately thebeginning o f 1964, was carry ing on an

f f i r with one o f the sec re ta r i es t the Sun-Sent ine l , andthe husband o f the s e c r e t a r y came to the off i ces o f the paperand threatened to shoot BUCHANAN and the sec re ta ry.
