ERNST AND MATHILDE FRANK

SEYFFARDT

When the Frank family was originally discussing the idea of going to America, the plans included the parents and youngest child Mathilde. After five of the siblings emigrated,. Mathilde was left to help her parents until enough money could be saved for their trip to join the rest of the family in America. But that trip never took place. After Mathilde’s sister Sophie married William Seyffardt in America, the Frank’s were received a special visit in Dietlingen by William’s brother Ernst. Ernst was travelling from Lyon to his home in Krefeld, and decided to pay his respects to his brother’s new in-laws, knowing William would probably never return to Germany to meet them. Ernst was smitten with Mathilde, and after another visit, and a few evening serenades by Ernst, the two were engaged.

November 27, 1853 The day before yesterday I received your dear letter of the 15th of this month, and will not delay in giving you my answer today. . . . As I was always accustomed to taking care of mar-riage announcements at once, I will not deviate from my custom and go right to the matter. That you had won Mathilde’s heart was no longer a secret to us and, therefore your honor-able proposal, offering her your hand when the circumstances would permit is no surprise by nevertheless a delight. We have known your family, if only from letters, since the en-gagement of your brother William to Sophie, as a most respectable one. We had the pleas-ure of your acquaintance twice, and our conduct toward you must have shown that we re-spect and love you. Now you come and ask for the hand of our daughter for such a time as your circumstances will permit—and we parents can, after consulting our conscience and God’s help, rightly and justly do nothing better but to put the fate of our dear daughter to your Christian heart and into your loyal hands. Receive herewith, dear Ernst, our parental consent to the union of hearts which you and Mathilde have decided, undoubtedly not without deliberation, for the 25th of August. Receive herewith our best wishes for time and eternity, and the Lord who looks down from Heaven upon all human doings say His Amen to it. (from letter to Ernst Seyffardt, from Pastor Frank)

The wedding took place in Dietlingen on September 26, 1854, and the couple then moved to Krefeld. Ernst and his friend Henry te Neues, founded a silk-goods factory in Krefeld. They were well known busi-nessmen, and among their customers was Vincent van Gogh. Ernst was also an accomplished musician, and possessed an incredible tenor voice. Among his other talents was that of artist, and many family members received the gifts of his paintings. Three of those paintings are known to exist today, all to members of the Frank family in America. Following the death of Pastor Frank in 1864, Ernst and Mathilde became the center of the Frank family in Germany. They often hosted visiting relatives from America, and were remembered fondly as warm and genuine hosts. Ernst and Mathilde had five children, two of whom also became accomplished musicians. Daughter Bertha had a beautiful contralto voice, and was asked to sing for Brahms, Verdi, and other famous composers of the day. Son Ernst was a well known composer and friend of Brahms and other renowned composers and musicians. For a time he was professor of music at the Conservatory at Stuttgart. On July 31, 1871, Mathilde suffered a heart attack and died. Ernst was lonely and moved to Duesseldorf to be near his married children. In later years he returned to the place of his birth—Aachen. There he contin-ued his painting and enjoyed visits from his children until his death on June 15, 1908.

GENERATION NO. 1

1. MATHILDE8 FRANK (JOHANN HEINRICH7, JOHANN GEORG6 FRANCKE, GOTTFRIED5, JAKOB4, JOHANNES3, HANS JAKOB2, HANS1) was born 27 Sep 1834 in Kuernbach, Germany, and died 03 Jul 1887 in Boppard on the Rhine, Germany. She married ERNST JULIUS SEYFFARDT 26 Sep 1854 in Dietlingen, Germany, son of LUDWIG SEYFFARDT and MATHILDE SCHEIBLER. He was born 03 Jul 1830 in Aachen, Germany, and died 16 Jun 1908 in Aachen, Germany. Notes for MATHILDE FRANK: Mathilde was the youngest child of Pastor and Frau Frank. She saw all but one of her siblings leave for America. She and her brother August did reunite when he visited their father in 1861, and when he attended the wedding of Mathilde's daughter in 1886. But she and her sisters would never again be together. Mathilde and Ernst lived in Krefeld, where Ernst owned a silk goods store. Vincent Van Gogh was a cus-tomer at one time. Among their children was Ernst, a composer and friend of Johannes Brahms. Ernst (the father) was also a very talented musician and painter. Notes for ERNST JULIUS SEYFFARDT: "Now, I still have something to tell you about St. Nicholas: I received a very good letter from Etten, and enclosed was some money for a pair of gloves. As I still have a pair, I bought something else with it, another map by Stieler, of Scotland alone. At present I can get them separately at Seyffardt's but probably I shall not always have such an opportunity." Letter from Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo; December 9, 1877 (referring to August Seyffardt's silk goods store) More About ERNST SEYFFARDT and MATHILDE FRANK: Marriage: 26 Sep 1854, Dietlingen, Germany Children of MATHILDE FRANK and ERNST SEYFFARDT are: 2. i. HERR TREUSCH VON BUTTLAR 01 May 1886 in Boppard on Rhine, Germany, son of CARL VON BUTTLAR and BERTHA VOLK. He was born 07 Apr 1852 in Reuda, Kreis Eschwege, and died 05 Jan 1915 in Saarbrucken, Rhineland, Germany. Verdi, Brahms usw. According to a family history by Barbara Schroeder von Buttlar (quoting her great great grandmother Bertha Auguste Frein Treusch (Seyffardt) von Buttlar Brandenfels, from "Jungenderinneriungen" written in 1931), Bertha Auguste had a beautiful contralto voice, and performed with/for well known composers such as Verdi and Brahms.

Translation: After I go walking with my small grandchildren, and they are tired, they will say “Please tell us something from when you were a child, Grandma.” And they are so quiet and good, that I dig into my old-est memories and tell them even the smallest details. I am amazed that these young girls find it so interest-ing. Not only them, but their parents. So it happens that I write down some things from my childhood. I was born in Krefeld in the Rhineland on May 22, 1856 under the sound of cannon fire. This should have been an omen that I would experience many wars. Until now there have been too many: 1864, 1866, 1870, and the terrible war of 1914 to 1918. At my birth, however, there was not the sound of battle, but the roar of the Corpus Christi Festival processional, and at 11:00 a.m. the noise of the celebration escorted me into the world. I join with fellow Crefelder Minister Hermann von Beckerath in saying, “my cradle stood near the loom of my father.” This is not because our fathers had been sitting at these looms and weaving—that was for more skillful hands. By my parents made their living as owners of the silk company Seyffardt and te Neues, and there were looms in every room, at which the weavers would run their shuttles back and forth through the tightly stretched silk threads, and again and again before the weaving beam gave a shock to the chest. Girls (Schermäusen) served to wind the yarn, and boys (Spulanen) wound the floss onto spools. This was later very amusing for us children, and the winding was like a magnificent carousel. In memory of Ernst H. Seyffardt On May 6, it will be the 100th year sine the birth of the highly regarded conductor, teacher and composer, Ernst H. Seyffardt. From 1892 to 1926 he was active in Stuttgart as the Conductor of the Neuer Singverein and teacher of piano at the Conservatory of Music. His memory is still alive. Seyffardt was born on May 6, 1859 in Krefeld as a child of a musical family which consorted with numer-ous famous artists, among them Max Bruch, Pablo de Sarasate, Joseph Joachim and Ferdinand Hiller. After studying music in Cologne and Berlin, Seyffardt went for one year to Vienna where he also met Brahms, with whom he developed a lifelong friendship, and who patronized him wherever possible. For instance one year later, after being appointed Music Director in Freiburg/Breisgau in 1887, he was the first one to perform the newly completed Gypsy Songs in a small circle, accompanied by the composer himself. In 1892, Seyffardt received an offer from Stuttgart as the Condcutor of the Neuer Singverein and would soon become a teacher of piano at the Conservatory of Music, where he was appointed Professor in 1897. In 1926 he retired from this position and settled in Partenkirchen, where on November 30, 1942, he died. At the Stuttgart Conservatory Seyffardt gave theory and piano lessons for three decades. Several famous conductors and composers thank him for his versatile and diligent training. He especially deserved praise for his work with the Neuer Singverein (today the Philharmonischer Chor) whose concerts became an indispen-sable part of Stuttgart music life. Finally, Seyffardt also was an authority of voice training and played a role in many singing competitions. Seyffardt's picture in history is supplemented by the fact that he was one of the co-founders of the association of German composers, the present day GEMA. Seyffardt's musical achievements were multiple, especially in the field of vocal music. In addition to his work in piano and chamber music, he received awards and recognition for numerous songs and oratories. For his work "Schicksalsgesang" op. 13 (Words by Geibel) dedicated to Brahms, he won the Felix Mendels-sohn prize, and later won it again, sharing with his school friend Humperdinck. Particularly Seyffardt's full-length cantata "Aus Deutschlands grosser Zeit" was frequently performed; his three-act opera "Die Glocken von Plurs" was a big success on the music scene in Stuttgart in 1912, and would be performed later in Kre-feld. Still at the age of 80 Seyffardt completed a large choral work, staying active until the end. For his 75th birthday (1934) he received great honors. On this day, the college for music honored him with a performance of Seyffardt's work. His Cantate was performed under the direction of Professor Leonhardt with the participation of Karl Erb. *** Amongst the disciples of the Berlin "Hochschule der Music" of this period, who were destined to reap fu-ture honors and with whom I became more or less intimately acquainted, were Stavenhagen, the distin-guished pianist and conductor. In 1880 he was awarded the scholarship prize of the Mendelssohn endow-ment, sharing the honor with my cousin Ernst Seyffardt, who was awarded the Mendelssohn prize for his Schicksalsgesant dedicated to Johannes Brahms. The former was a pupil of Rudorff, while Seyffardt devoted most of his time to composition with Friedrich Kiel. (from "Musical Reminiscences" by Louis F. Frank) More About ERNST HEINRICH SEYFFARDT: Occupation: composer and musical director in Stuttgart

RUMELIN; d. Abt. 1987. Translation: Bertha Theresia Mund (Bertchen) was married to Arthur Nida-Rumelin (unfortunately). I knew him very well-he was not a nice person!! He created a small rift in the Munich family. They broke off contact with Bertchen because of Rumelin. Bertchen was a lov-ing person. After Reumelin's death she left for India. Presumably she joined a sect. Since then, unfortunately, nothing more was hear from her. It's a shame. The Munich folks are not entirely innocent in this story. They always felt a little better than the others!!
