PrésentationOn 1st January 2015, France had 66.3 million inhabitants: 64.2 million inMetropolitan France and 2.1 million in the five overseas departments. That numberincreased by approximately 300,000 people since the previous year, or a rise of0.4%. 2014 was marked by a stable yet dynamic birth-rate, and fewer deaths thanin 2012 and 2013. The natural balance was therefore higher than the two previousyears. Life expectancy at birth, which had reached a standstill, has risen again:85.4 years on average for women, and 79.2 years on average for men. The totalfertility rate, one of the highest in Europe, remained stable.
On 1st January 2014, housing stock amounted to 34.7 million dwellings inMetropolitan France. Main residences made up 82.8% of the stock, second homesand occasional dwellings accounted for 9.4% and vacant dwellings for 7.8%. Socialrental housing, as defined in the social rental housing directory, amounted to4.7 million dwellings.
In 2014, economic growth was weak in France: gross domestic product in constanteuros rose 0.2% after +0.7% in 2013. Household consumption picked up slightly. The decline in investment, however, became more pronounced. Imports rose at amore sustained pace than exports, causing foreign trade to contribute negatively togrowth. The rise in the purchasing power of gross disposable income is primarilyattributable to the buoyancy of social benefits in cash as well as a slowdown in taxes.Purchasing power per consumption unit rose again after three years of decline. Thehousehold savings ratio picked up, while the margin rate of non-financialcorporations reached a low point. The government deficit as defined in theMaastricht Treaty stood at 84.8 billion euros, which is 4.0% of GDP. Against 2013,it dropped 1.6 billion euros due to a slightly faster increase in revenue as comparedto that of expenditure. The compulsory levies ratio was at 44.9%, a moderateincrease of 0.2 points against 2013. The weight of public debt in GDP grew3.3 points to reach 95.6%.
Non-agricultural market employment decreased slightly (– 0.2%), owing to theweak pace of growth in activity. This decline was offset, however, by the increase innon-market employment. This rise was largely due to government-subsidisedlabour contracts, particularly emplois d’avenir (“future jobs”) (including teachingemplois d’avenir) which were ramped up in 2013 and 2014. As a result, totalemployment rose on average over the year (+ 0.3%). After two years of increase in2012 and 2013, the unemployment rate was virtually stable on average over theyear in 2014 (10.2% after 10.3%, including overseas departments), yet it increasedat the end of the year to reach 10.4% in late 2014.
Today almost all French households have a refrigerator, a television, and a washingmachine. Despite the crisis, the consumption of telephone services and goods wasbooming in 2013. The explosion of tablets and smartphones led to an increase inmulti-devices and screens in households and led to new uses of the internet tocommunicate, access information, and for entertainment and consumptionpurposes.
In 2013, France remained the most visited country in the world with 84.7 millionforeign tourists. France is ranked first for the number of international tourist visits, and third for tourism related revenue at 42.7 billion euros, behind Spain and theUnited States.
