EDITOR’S NOTE
Summerishere.Someofitwet;somedry;somehotandsomenotsohot.Ihopeyou’reallenjoying our British Summer in all available formats! There have been lots of disturbing reports of vandalism and harrassment over the past few months, with lots of accompanying social media activity. It all seems to have calmed down abitnow.I’vehadmanypeoplesharestorieswithmeaboutthis.Oneinparticularsticksout; that of an elderly man with dementia, sitting having a cup of tea when the window he was sitting next to was suddenly knocked on violently. The subsequent burns required a trip to the doctor and he now no longer sits near that window. Scaring an elderly, confused man in his own home must take a special kind of bravery and strength of character.Ihopeasacommunity,togetherwiththelocalPCSO,wecanstopthesesortsofincidentsoccurring.Please keep sending in your contributions and contacting me with anything that you would like to contribute.NEXTDEADLINE15thJuly2017newsletter@framptononsevern.comTerry Coughlin

Several of the older timber features are badly in need of replacement. It is hoped that we can replace the timbers, which will be less expensive than buying a complete new item. It will be thanks to Dickie Baker and his team as they take on this task. Sadly, with the ever ongoing costs of playground bark, we will be looking at around costs ofabout£2000.00.Wehaveasmallamountofmoneyintheplaygroundaccount,butwillbelookingforfinancialhelpandthereforewillwelcomedonationstowardsasaferplayareafor the 2017-2018 playtimes. It is thanks to the support from both groups and villagers that we were able to achieve this. But what does the Parish Council DO?We have had a disappointment since our last newsletter. Your second choice on the online survey was a roundabout and we will continue negotiations in the hope of getting that.Onamorepositivenote, theprocessofgettingdefibrillatorsismovingaheadand we have recommended that the application for a G4 mast to replace the old one at the Telephone Exchange should get planning permission, so hopefully our mobile phone signals will be better soon. Gloucester and its Tall Ships Tony Conder returned for a third time on 28th April to give us another of hisfascinating talks on one of his favourite topics – Gloucester and its tall ships. The babies are suckling, and no hand feeding should be needed. They stand a good chance of growing to maturity and being released back into the wild later this year.

“Factoids - Exploding Food! “ Not a ‘quiz question’ but just unusual ‘facts’ to amaze your friends .... Sausages are called “Bangers” because, during WW2 they
contained so much water they exploded when fried! and
Grapes explode if you put them in the microwave! [Don’t try it !!!!]
”Writing Calculators “ Incredibly, pocket calculators have names ! Mine is called...well enter 317537.... then turn the calculator upside down to find out. Now that you can see how calculators can ‘spell’ as well as ‘do
sums’, what numbers would you need to enter to spell out these words?
[Remember.....you have to enter the numbers in ‘reverse order’ to get the word the right way round when you turn the calculator upside down.]
1. GIGGLE 2. SOIL 3. GOSH 4. HOLE 5. BELLS 6. GOBBLE 7. BOILS 8. SHELL
9. HEEL 10. LEGS
“Food and Drink” -‐ but not quite as you know it! Britain has some great ‘regional food and drink’ -‐ so good at times that the name of the ‘town or area’ can becomes part of the food name! For example: If I I say “Cheddar”; you say “Cheese”! What places are associated with these foods/drinks -‐ so much so that, often, just by naming the place everyone knows exactly the food/drink you mean? Pork Pie Cake
A ‘Clanger’ Tart
Gin Smokie
Hotpot Mint Cake
Sole Black pudding
Pudding Dark Chocolate
Bun Pastie
Sausage (circular)
Pickle
Give me some directions please!
Which way now Hardy?
Nelson, on top of his column in Trafalgar Square, actually faces west! If he did a “right turn” ; “about turn”; “left turn” sequence of drill moves, which way would he end up facing? My compass is broken !
I’m lost! And no matter which way I turn, my compass needle still shows North straight ahead -‐ it just won’t move round at all! So....where must I be?

News from Wick CourtAsyoumayhaveseeninthepresswewerechosentohostan“informal, private”visitfrom the Duchess of Cambridge. We were of course delighted to welcome HRH to Wick Court and tried very hard to ensure she got to experience a “normal” day on the farm. ThatweekwehadVauxhallPrimarySchoolfromLambethherewhodidn’tknowtheywere getting a royal visitor until they arrived on the Friday. After meeting with Michael and Clare Morpurgo theDuchess joined the children in the Dining Room to enjoy a Wick Court lunch, she was taken on a house tour by two children – and Sarah and June from Wick Court (tomakesureshedidn’t justget to see toilets) theneverybody gathered in the roundhouse for a story from Michael – after a brief worry over protocol, Michael had thestoryteller’schairandHRHhadaspeciallyselectedlog to sit on.The rest of the afternoon was spent joining the three groups of children on their variousfarmtasks–pottingonflowersforourcuttingpatch,plantingonions,muckingoutchickensandweighingpigs.AteverystagetheDuchesswastotallyhands-onandchatted to the children about what they were doing and told us all about her chickens, herchildrenandherbrother’sbees. Then there was a chance for the many press who descended on us to take pictures as she and all the children mingled with the sheep in the beautiful perry orchard – and of course it was here that HRH fed the unfortunately-named bottle-fed lamb “Stinky”.The visit ended with a tea party in the Courtyard for our Partner farmers and volunteers to meet her – and enjoy some very delicious cakes.
It was a lovely day, HRH was very easy company, genuinely interested in Farms for City Children and lovely with the children. If a “private, informal” visit could be arranged with no press at all that would be perfect….(Andforthoseofyouwhomissedthetweets–theWickCourtstaffwerewearing3year-oldsafetywellies,£40fromallgoodFarmSuppliers…!)If you would like to have a visit and tour of Wick Court , meet the children and animals, tastetheproduce, tourthehouse, seeouramazingnewroundhousesandgetasenseof what Farms for City Children is all about then you too can have a special visit :-WeshallbeopenforOpenFarmSundayonJune11thfrom10am–1pm

Be prepared this summerPrevent heat exhaustion and heat strokeWe don’t yet know what this summer will bring, but remember that there is a high risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke during hot weather. To help prevent:
• drink plenty of cold drinks, especially when exercising• take cool baths or showers• wear light-coloured, loose clothing• sprinkle water over skin or clothes• avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm• avoid excess alcohol• avoid extreme exercise
This will also prevent dehydration and help your body keep itself cool.
Please help to keep an eye on children, the elderly and people with long-term health conditions (like diabetes or heart problems) because they’re more at risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
The Emergency Response Team is endorsed by Frampton’s Parish Council and has developed an Emergency Response Plan for our village. If you would like to be involved, please call Mark Griffiths on 741632.
Frampton has an Emergency Response Team to help you, and our community as a whole, respond well in the event of a major emergency – from floods, foot and mouth, fires and storms to power cuts, transport accidents or widespread illness. We have pulled together local resources and expertise in order to complement the emergency services, should an incident occur. You can call one of the team if you need immediate assistance during a major emergency (numbers included in your Home Emergency Plan).

Since taking over the area of Frampton on Severn just over a year ago now, we have both enjoyed getting to know some of you and have been more than happy with the extremely low level of crime. Keeping a lid on the crime rate is part of what we do and responding to incidents of suspicious vehicles which come on patch looking for scrap and dealing with these persons also keeps the crime rate down.Coveringtheperiod9thApril2017tothe9thMay2017andinparticularforatwoweekperiodfromthe9th–23rdApriltherehasbeenanunfortunateriseinanti-socialbehaviourwithintheareaofTheOvaltoAnnWicksRoadwhichinturnhas lead to a slight increase in the crime rate for the area mostly as a result of 5 cars having been damaged with key scratches. We have also received reports of stones having been thrown at a few properties and garden hedges having been jumped into along with a bench vandalised outside a premises on The Green. This unusual behaviour has obviously caused a great deal of upset and concern for the residents in the area and clearly is not acceptable. We have been speaking to some of the victims and have been getting a good amount of information which has helped us to form a picture of who has been causing the upset and indeed what we will do in the longer term to help prevent this from escalating. These measures will be put in place over the coming weeks, however, at this point in time we are pleased to report that the situation has calmed down somewhat but request that residents inform us with any information which can assist with our on-going enquiries. Finally a few people have raised concerns about the amount of time it can take to get through to police on the non emergency 101 number. This does depend on how many people are wanting to access our service and at peak times the wait has made people put the phone down without reporting their incident.Forthoseofyouwhohaveaccesstotheinternet, ifyoudon’tgetthroughonthephone you can use our email contact which does go straight into the control room and may provide a quicker response and this is [email protected] making sure to place your name along with address and telephone number and a brief outline of why you are sending the email.Michael.trebble@gloucestershire.pnn.police.ukMelanie.campbell@gloucestershire.pnn.police.ukPCSOMIKETREBBLE&PCMELCAMPBELL.

Frampton loses a much loved friendAlotofpeoplehavecommentedthatafamiliarfriendhasnotbeenseenlately. Indeedhehasnotbeenseenthisyear.Notonlythat,butitisbelievedthathispartnerhasnotbeenseeneither.Orhasshe?I am referring to our friend of many years (at least 17 by some accounts), in the shape of our somewhat lame, Frampton mute swan together with his female partner.During all the years I have lived on the Green, he turned up regularly each year around late February or early March, with a partner and set about constructing a nest. It usually falls to the cob to decide where the nest is to be built. He usually chose to construct it on the edge of the largest pond, adjacent to the Manor Farm entrance. I do believe that one year, the nest was constructed on the little island in the middle.Having carried out his duties as a good cob should, his partner would duly lay somewhere between 6 and 8 grey tinted eggs and taking turns, they would incubate them for some thirty six days, give ortake.Oncehatched, andstrongenoughtoswimaroundaftertheirparents, thecygnetsandtheir parents, would stay around the pond for a week or so and then early one morning, in line astern, they would march up the Green, cross the road, and going through the Court, they would decamptotheParklake.Andthatwouldbethat.Howeverlastyearwasdifferent.Wasithis‘swansong’?Orwashewithadifferenthen?Insteadofheadingforthelake,theydecidedtostayontheGreen.Oneaccountsuggestedtheydidgoto the lake, but were given a hostile reception by the incumbent swans and decided the human populationofFramptonwasconsiderablyfriendlier.Nodoubtthiswasreinforcedbythefactthata decidedly good breakfast was to be had, either from the kindly humans in the Top Shop House or later, from the newly built Top Shop next door. Maybe they were impressed by the new shop even incorporating a swan logo in its sign.ThusthewholefamilywouldparadearoundtheGreen, completelyunfazedbyallthedistractionssuchasthemanyvisitors, thedogs,TheFramptonFeastFunfair,Gifford’sCircusandthetrafficpassing up and down the Green. Mum was usually in the lead with Dad limping along in the rear.Thecygnet’sstubbylittlewingsarethelasttomaturewiththeirfull, flightfeathers, butbytheendof the summer, the whole family was ready to depart. It is assumed that they departed for the lake orthecanalormaybetheyeventuallyflewfurtherafield.Slimbridgeperhaps.ButwhatofDad?Didhemakeitthroughthewinter,ordidhefinallysuccumbunderthehandicapofhisinjuredleg.There may be a mysterious conclusion to this story. In the last month or so, a lone swan has turned up quite regularly on one or the other of the ponds. It might be just a random visitor. However, it seems very comfortable in the presence of humans. It looks as though it could be a female. Could it be the lonesome hen from lastyear?Ormightitevenbeoneofheroffspring?Whatever the truth of the situation, it seems rather sad that we have not again had the privilege, of observing a family of beautiful mute swans, being raised from eggs to maturity.Bryan Webster Could this be Mum from last year,
or even one of the Cygnets?
A poem from Gracie Pearce (aged 7)In FramptonInFramptonleavesgrow, treesblowandflowersgrowbefore Winter comes again, Spring,Summer,Autumn,Winter, the seasons turn around. In Spring all of the nature comes alive and it starts to get warmer. In Summer it is very hot! You get ice creams on the Green. InAutumnleavesfalloffthetrees and it starts to get cold again. In Winter it is very cold and some times snowes! The world is always changing.
