Green information technology (IT) can be one of the world’s strongest assets in achieving and sustaining a prosperous, low-carbon economy

a Low-Carbon Economy, 2008

To reduce carbon emissions by 26% by 2020, based on business-as-usual levels.

With enhanced international assistance, Indonesia offered an increased reduction of 41% by 2020, based on business-as-usual levels

President Dr. Yudhoyono, COP-15 Denmark.

Emissions reduction –Indonesia’s commitment

- IT infrastructure typically accounts for more than 20% of the energy used in an office building, with up to 70% attributed to IT in some offices (especially with a large data centre)

- IT-related electricity operating costs (and emissions) can easily be cut by 15% (just by doing simple things) or more than 50% (by deployment of more energy efficient systems)

- It’s about basic process improvements to efficiency (including change in organisationalbehaviour use or culture) AND judicious deployment of energy-efficient products

The Business Case for Green IT

Page 9: Framework Model For Greening It Green IT Seminar Binus Final

9

Why A Framework?

• There is no clear definition of Green IT– It means different things to different

people

• There are many components to Green IT– No standardised way of representing them

• A Framework provides a consistent structure– A reference point for further analysis

Page 10: Framework Model For Greening It Green IT Seminar Binus Final

10

The Evolution of the Framework

• Separate and independent work by Connection Research, RMIT University (2008) & applied work at Aust. National University (2009- )

• Similar approaches, similar methodology – agreement to combine into a single framework and methodology

• Subsequent refinement through input from many users, vendors, consultants, academics

19

How it Works

• Each Pillar (and each component within each pillar) is affected by the five actions

• We can measure, via a survey, the extent to which an organisation is enacting each action in each component of each pillar

• We can then quantify each of these and create and Index

The Measurement Methodology –Green IT Capability Maturity Model

Page 22: Framework Model For Greening It Green IT Seminar Binus Final

22

The Framework “Package”

• Survey for benchmarking

• Executive and IT Technical Training

• Organisational Certification –ComputersOFF

• Individual Certification -CompTIA

Page 23: Framework Model For Greening It Green IT Seminar Binus Final

23

The Online Survey• 30-40 minutes• Questions on each aspect of the

Framework• All quantified according to the

Capability Maturity Model• Non-technical – policies,

implementation, practices, etc.

Page 24: Framework Model For Greening It Green IT Seminar Binus Final

24

The Benchmarking Methodology

• All data collected for all respondents– Quantified and normalised

• Each response applied to the appropriate Pillar of the Framework– plus the “Metrics” action

• Allows for the creation of five Indexes– Weighted average of all responses to that

Pillar, expressed as 0-100

Page 25: Framework Model For Greening It Green IT Seminar Binus Final

25

The Green IT Readiness Index (GrITx)

• Overall Index (0-100) comprising fivesub-indexes

• Allows for benchmarking between industries, countries, and for a single organisation over time

• A unique tool for quantifying Green IT maturity (or “readiness”)

The Green IT Executive Training

Ideal for Top-Executives / IT / Facility professionals who have decision making authority over a company's IT infrastructureIdeal for IT / Facility professionals who work in implementing green IT initiatives such as IT managers, data center or facilities/operations managers, IT technicians, and system or network administrators

Courses not only teach organisations how they can minimisethe emissions caused by their IT systems but also how IT can be used as an enabler

Strata Green IT Certificate

Page 31: Framework Model For Greening It Green IT Seminar Binus Final

31

Organisational Certification

Certification program is designed to easily identify and recognise

those organisations who commit themselves to reducing their impact on the environment, through their energy-efficient and green IT initiatives.

Closing Words - Go Green and Realise the Cost Savings!

• Green IT including Energy Efficiency is a Competitiveness Issue

• Make a commitment to action

• The Green IT Framework is a“tried and tested” tool for quantifying Green IT maturity (or “readiness”)
