P ’ C LORD,TEACHUSTOPRAY (31). In his autobiog-raphy, He Touched Me, Fr. John Powell, SJ, had shared his belief that God touches us immediately and directly by putting thoughts into our minds and desires into our hearts. When something “rings true” I need to prayerfully discern and decide if it is from God. This is what happened in the course of writing my 14- page letter to Mary Jo. The thought, “You de-cide what you really want to do and I’ll back you up with all the graces you need to do it,” inally got me over my fear of making a mistake. I decided that since I only had one relatively short life to live in this world and God was offering me the call and enabling me to be an Oblate of St. Joseph priest, I would say, “Yes.” There were tears aplenty as I imagined letting go of the prospect of marrying Mary Jo. And there was deep-down peace as I put my trust in God’s per-sonal word to me after eight years of trying to hear his call. I put my af irmative response to God’s call to be an Oblate priest at the end of my letter to Mary Jo. It was two in the morning. I crawled into bed and fell asleep. The phone in the hallway of our Berkeley House of Studies began to ring at 6:00 am. All groggy, I crawled out of bed and managed to pick up the re-ceiver before it stopped ringing. It was Mary Jo, … calling from Mississippi. Before I could say anything beyond, “Hello,” Mary Jo said, “John, I have been reading the journals you left me and I really think God is calling you to be a priest.” I told Mary Jo about the letter and of the decision I had made just hours before her call. I remain totally amazed by how Mary Jo’s call had come just four hours after the conclusion of my eight-year effort to receive my vocation from God. I thought, “God really knows how fragile and insecure I am and He’s willing and able to give me the kind of assurances I need. Praise God! Later that day I decid-ed to go see a movie. It was a Charles Dickens story called, “Oliver.” As it turned out there was a little bit of romance in the movie. I thought of Mary Jo and found myself saying, “Oh no!. What have I done?” (More to come)

Blessings, Fr. John

GoodFridayis designated as a day of fast and ab-stinence. The obligation to fast commences on the18th birthday and ceases on the 59th birthday. This means that besides one full meal, the other two meals should not equal a full meal. ¿Qué he hecho? (Más por venir)

Bendiciones, Fr. John
