Dear Friends,

“Be What You are and Be at its Best.” S.F.S If a child is a baptized Catholic, he or she would most certainly have prayed (and played!) with a lighted candle before. In fact, in the Catholic Church, blessed candles are used to administer all the sacraments, except the Sacrament of Reconciliation. A candle used for prayer is also sometimes called a votive candle. It is intended to be burnt as a votive offering in an act of prayer. The word “votive” is derived from the Latin word “votum” which means vow or promise. As we offer a prayer to God on behalf of someone or something, the candle that we light is a tangible sign of that prayer. In praying with a lighted candle, we align ourselves and our intentions with the will of God. We pray for the Light of the World to come. Besides use in Church, blessed candles can also be used in the homes for personal prayers. The Church places such emphasis on blessed candles; there is even a special day for blessing candles. This is on 2 February, on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the feast we are celebrating today. We here in USA do not do that in many churches. The feast of the Presentation of the Lord occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing and procession of candles is included in the day's liturgy. This day is also referred to as the "Purification of Mary." This feast concludes the celebration of the Nativity and with the offerings of the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon, the events now point toward Easter. During the presentation of Jesus at the temple, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah, the “light to enlighten the pagans and the glory of Your people” (Luke.2:32). The candles blessed on this day and kept by the faithful in their homes should be seen as a sign of Christ 'the light of the world' and an expression of faith. May the celebration of the Eucharist bring forth an enlightenment into our lives and as we go back home after the Holy Mass, may we also continue to pray that the light of Christ will shine upon the world.

“Be Blessed and Be a Blessing”

Yours in Christ & Mary, Fr. R. Mathias MSFS

IC Church is looking for gently used couches and chairs for the Church basement. The meeting area is used by various Church ministries, RCIA, Youth Group, Prayer Shawl, etc. The furniture

that is currently there is very old and uncomfortable. If you have furniture you would like to donate,

please call the parish office.

A Faithful friend is a sturdy shelter.

He who finds one, finds a treasure (Sirach 6:14)

Tomy our visiting priest, a priest from the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales (MSFS), founded in France in the year 1838 by Fr. Peter Marie Mermier to spread the renewal of faith in the Love of God, plant the Gospel in the mission lands of Africa and Asia and develop the society through education both spiritual and material, provide institutions of formation of priests and Catechists, and establish spirituality Centers to continue the work of St. Francis De Sales in our modern time. Every year we have one appeal or a Second Collection for Our Own Order. This year in my place Fr. Tomy MSFS will speak to you on this work of the Missionary work of the Congregation specifically for the Mission of Malawi (A New African Mission) and seek your support of participation in our ministry to the world. Dear Parishioners, Catholic Schools Week started on Sunday with our parish Mass and kick-off celebration. We had a wonderful turn out for the spaghetti dinner and book fair. Thanks for joining us! Monday was a day to celebrate the community. The staff and students of Immaculate Conception Catholic School cleaned the church for our spiritual community.

If you would like to donate to the Day of Giving there is still time. Simply fill out the form in last

week’s bulletin and place it into a donation envelope and return it to the school. All money collected will go
