OHN Houghton, first martyr of the English Reformation, was born in Essex,
graduated with degrees in law, served 4 years as a parish priest, then became a
Carthusian and prior of the Charterhouse of London. Opposing Henry VIII’s
Acts of Succession and Supremacy, he was arrested and refused to swear the Oath of
Supremacy. When the oath was modified to include the phrase “in so far as the law
of God permits,” John signed and was released. Later parliament required that the
original, unmodified oath be signed. John was arrested and thrown in the Tower.
True to his vow of silence, he did not defend himself, refused to cooperate or sign.
The jury found no malice, but when threatened with prosecution, they found John
guilty of treason. Dragged through the streets, he was hanged, drawn, and
quartered. Parts of his remains were on display throughout London. Pope Paul VI
canonized him in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.

The Ascension of the Lord “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
A Reflection from Our Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The description of the Ascension of our Lord in the Acts may prompt some of us to ‘look up’ to locate heaven somewhere in the galaxy. God is not up, God is not even out, He is within us. The Ascension of Jesus is to be understood as his departure from us in a visible manner to the glory of his Father. He returned to the glory of the Father so that he may be more perfectly with us. The presence of Jesus among us is a reality we shouldn’t lose sight of. Our Lord is present in the Eucharist sacra mentally. He is also truly in our hearts, though we don’t see the glory of God in any visible manner. Jesus goes away from us visibly during the ascension, but he returns to our hearts invisibly. In Luke’s view, Jesus took forty days after the resurrection to ascend to his Father. Forty is a number of perfection and completeness in the Hebrew tradition: the Israelites spent forty years in the desert; the prophets and Jesus himself fasted for forty days; King David reigned for the same number of years, and so on. Paul tells the Ephesians (1:17 – 23) that the cosmic Christ is far superior to all spiritual and angelic beings. The Church is the fullness of Christ for Paul. Everything that is Christ belongs to the Church as everything that is the Father belongs to Christ. Christ has entered the Father’s glory in order that he might convey this fullness to His Church. Thus, the Ascension is a MYSTERY and not a historical event. The mystery is: The Lord physically and visibly has departed from us in order that He may come to us in His fullness. We have to take part in the life of the Church in all its forms to enter into the glory that the Lord has destined for us.
