Ken Robinson, CFP® President’s Message
Happy New Year! As we bid farewell to a very turbulent 2014, it appears 2015 is picking up right where we left off.
Despite all of the turmoil and confusion in the world, one thing is very clear. The need for financial planning has
never been greater. This presents a huge opportunity for our members to serve the growing number of people in need
of assistance. It’s an exciting time to be in the financial services industry!
Our primary goal as a chapter is to help you become more effective in your practice, in your career, and most
importantly, in serving your clients. We do this by providing great programs, speakers, and networking opportunities
throughout the year. In 2015, our board will focus on providing the most relevant, high-quality continuing education
and professional development programs to our fellow members. We also want to provide plenty of opportunities for
you to network with fellow members and sponsorship partners in order to help you gain new insights and grow your
business. With these goals in mind, we have planned a fantastic line-up of events for 2015.
To kick off the New Year, the Winter Symposium is just over two weeks away! The event will be held at the Dulles
Hyatt on Friday, January 23rd. The agenda is packed with great topics and amazing speakers, as well as plenty of
opportunities to socialize with your industry colleagues and to gather valuable information from our sponsorship
partners. Please click HERE to review the schedule and speakers for the day! In addition to a great line-up of
speakers, we will be raffling off two state-of-the-art big screen TVs and two $100 Visa gift cards! We are expecting
this year’s event to be a sellout with space limited to 300, so if you have not registered, please click HERE.

We are also very excited to announce our 2nd annual FPA NCA Career Fair to be held on Friday, February 27th. It
was such a huge success last year that we had to move it to a larger space for 2015. This year the Career Fair will be
at the McLean Hilton in the Tyson’s Corner area. Register early as space is limited.
Last year we introduced a new monthly luncheon format that included two presentations with lunch and networking
time in-between. The format was very well received, and we will continue the approach in 2015. Our programs
committee has planned a spectacular schedule of luncheon speakers and topics for this year. Please visit our
Community Calendar for a list of upcoming events and add them to your calendar! And don’t forget about our
member-breakfast events, happy hours, and our Charity Golf Event on May 6th.
As always, we need your feedback and suggestions to help us make our programs even better. So please reach out to
us with your thoughts and ideas. The contact information for our Board of Directors is listed HERE. And please get
involved and volunteer for one of our committees. It is great way to make an impact and to build new relationships
with your colleagues.
I wish all of you a healthy and prosperous 2015.
Best Regards,
Ken Kenneth C. Robinson, CFP®

The Elephant Whisperer Come find out why an elephant is the perfect analogy for the quirky brains we can’t escape but can find ways to
tame. Whether it’s moving in or out of the market at the wrong time or failing to get the insurance coverage they
need, clients often act against their best interests. To help combat this, we’ll arm you with cognitive and behavioral
research-based techniques for making financial planning more effective—helping clients hear your advice, make
better decisions, and ultimately take productive action towards their goals.

Meet Our Featured 2015 Winter Symposium Speaker: January 23, 2015, 6AM - 5:30PM - Dulles Hyatt, Herndon, VA
Amy Florian, CEO, Corgenius, Speaking on "Help! What Do I Say to a Grieving Client?" and a second
presentation on "Aging and Dementia"
Please take a sneak peak at Amy's style from the video on the Corgenius homepage.
We feature a can't-miss speaker at our January session. Amy Florian combines the best of neuroscience,
psychology, and business practice with a good dose of humor as she travels the country bringing her unique and
highly practical education to financial professionals. Here are a few tidbits to pique your interest:
From a broker-dealer CEO:
"Your combination of pure and honest life purpose, relatability, and passion on your topic…created one of the most
incredibly well-received keynote events we've ever had".
Doreen Weber
President and CEO of Fintegra Financial Solutions
The full text of Ms. Weber's letter to Amy is here From the editor of a financial services publishing group:
"So what to make of the fact that the highest rated speaker at IMCA’s 2014 annual conference was Amy Florian,
the CEO of Chicago-based Corgenius? Rather than discussing asset allocation or inverted yield curves, Florian
talks about death and dying, about dementia and Alzheimer’s. If you’ve heard Florian speak, you wouldn’t be
surprised at her high ratings, even though she speaks directly, sometimes toughly but always with a leavening pinch
of humor, about topics that too many of us would prefer to avoid…"
Worried about how to attract the next generation of clients? You could do much worse than to demonstrate to your
current clients’ children how valuable your services are, how you’re ready to go the extra mile for clients in the
most practical of ways..."
Jamie Green
Editorial Director at Summit Business Media, reporting in ThinkAdvisor From a financial advisor:
"I was actually able to apply the morning's lesson, that very afternoon…Thank you Amy for giving me real life
tools that were immediately useful to communicate to a grieving client so effectively!"
Stephen Foster, Advisor and 2014 Attendee, Houston, TX
Don't forget! You can get a sneak peak at Amy's style from the video on the Corgenius homepage.

David Polak: Globalization has Blurred Geographic
Boundaries for Investors
In an integrated world economy, traditional investment approaches that define geographic mandates based on a
company’s country of domicile are becoming less relevant. Most large- and mid-sized companies have some
combination of customers, suppliers and production lines in multiple countries. The country in which a company is
incorporated or has its headquarters provides little information about its potential success or future stock price.
Thus, the domicile approach to measuring geographic exposures — one of the primary building blocks of asset
allocation — increasingly is disconnected from the fundamentals that drive companies and portfolios.
David will discuss looking at companies’ and portfolios’ economic exposure, using revenues as a proxy, provides
better information than country of domicile. For financial advisors, plan sponsors and other investors who build
and analyze investment programs, measuring economic exposure should be part of a broader tool kit. It will help
them better understand the opportunities and risks embedded in portfolios and build investment programs aligned
with participants’ objectives.
David Polak is an equity investment specialist at Capital Group. He has 30 years of investment industry
experience and has been with Capital Group for eight years. Earlier in his career at Capital, David was a research
portfolio coordinator for several global equity portfolios. Prior to joining Capital, he was a managing director at
Deutsche Bank, where he managed a global equity hedge fund. He also served in a variety of marketing and
management positions within the equity division at UBS. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from
University College London graduating with honors. David is based in New York.

Dr. Kathryn McCabe Votava: What Clients Don’t Know About Medicare
that Could Wreck Their Retirement
Dr. Votava is a registered professional nurse and has a PhD in health economics and nursing from the University
of Rochester in Rochester, New York. She completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in community and preventive
medicine at the University of Rochester and a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Prior to
starting GOODCARE.com, Dr. Votava worked as the director of clinical specialties and education at Visiting
Nurse Service of Rochester and Monroe County, Inc.
With her in-depth experience as a nurse practitioner and healthcare administrator, Dr. Votava is an expert in

major focus of Dr. Votava’s research is healthcare costs and outcomes for people during their retirement years, and
she has been published widely and spoken frequently on these topics.
Together with other healthcare experts in their respective fields, Dr. Votava and her staff work to develop
customized solutions to clients’ questions and solve their healthcare puzzles. In order to help more people get the
information they need about planning and paying for healthcare, in 2004 Votava created GOODCARE.com ®, an
online source for information, resources and free tools.
Dr. Votava will speak on the impact of Medicare in relation to retirement planning, as well as strategies to avoid
lifelong Medicare penalties. She will share ways to minimize the cost of Medicare while maximizing the coverage.

TAXATION INTERVIEW PROGRAM

FPA National Capital Area Chapter’s Career Day
A Professional Development Program and Job Fair
Where: Hilton McLean Tyson’s Corner (7920 Jones Branch Drive, McLean, VA 22102)
When: Friday, February 23rd, 2015
Whom: Job and internship seekers, interviewing/hiring firms, financial planning program advisors, sponsors &
volunteers
What:
Career Day is a professional development event hosted by the National Capital Area chapter of the
Financial Planning Association. The event is aimed at all levels of financial planners – from those students just
beginning to take financial planning courses and seeking internships to learn more about the profession, to
seasoned professionals who run some of the most successful businesses around.
Students from nearby financial planning programs are invited to attend for a multitude of reasons: interview
with the leading firms in the area for internship and/or full-time positions; meet some of the movers and shakers in
the financial planning profession; meet young, NexGen members in the area and begin to build your professional
network of peers; hear NexGen members discuss and explain their transition from student to professional and all
the struggles and successes along the path; learn the best tips for success; and more!
Professionals are encouraged and invited to attend and can expect to be provided the opportunity to: meet
the next generation of financial planners and learn more about them and their excitement for the profession; learn
more about the financial planning programs nearby from the advisors who attend; network with your own
professional network of local financial planners; interview students and others seeking internships and/or full-time
employment; and more!
Advisors from these nearby colleges and universities are also invited to attend to spread the word about the
financial planning programs and educate those who may not be familiar with the school/program. It’s a great
opportunity to meet financial planners and get your school on their list. These planners are likely extremely
willing to meet your students and provide guidance, tips and advice; and maybe even attend a program meeting at
your school.
National Capital Area FPA members who are not currently hiring or interested in the Career Fair piece of
the day are invited to join us for a luncheon program – network, get to know the students, enjoy a delicious lunch
and listen to the invited speaker.

We Congratulate our FPA NCA Member Brenda Blisk!
Brenda Blisk honored as Stellar Woman of the Year
at Virginia Women’s Business Conference
Brenda Blisk, Certified Financial Planner™ and CEO of the Blisk Financial Group in McLean, was recognized as “Stellar
Woman of the Year” at the Virginia Women’s Business Conference. Blisk was presented the award on November 21 at the
National Conference Center in Leesburg before an audience of 535 women. She is the second woman to receive this award.
Linda Crill, author of Blind Curves, a breast cancer survivor book, was the first recipient.
Blisk was recognized for her business and charitable achievements over her 29 year career. She started her career in the
financial services industry in 1985. At that time, the financial industry was almost totally male dominated – with less than one
percent participation by women in management positions. Even today, the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards
reports that only 23% of the nation’s 58,000 Certified Financial Planners® are women.
Blisk founded the Blisk Financial Group in 1997. In 2014, she was recognized by Barron’s as one of “America’s 1400 Top
Financial Advisors.” Similarly, she was recognized by Barron’s as one of “America's 1000 Top Financial Advisors” in 2009 –
2013 and as one of Barron’s “Top 100 Women Financial Advisors in the U.S” (2008, 2009 and 2010). Virginia Business
Magazine recognized her as one of the top 50 wealth advisors in Virginia in 2009 and 2010 and as one of the top 25 wealth
advisors in Virginia in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Throughout her career, Blisk has donated a portion of her salary to charity. Over the past five years, she has raised more than
$400,000 (net) for the Red Cross in the National Capital Region through her annual “In the Bag” auction. The Red Cross in
the National Capital Region provides disaster relief across eight counties in the Washington, DC, area, including 250,000
meals monthly, 750 American Red Cross Volunteers at area hospitals and gives support to US and World Disasters. Last year,
88,810 people in the region were touched by Red Cross community services.
Planning for the auction has become a nine-month process involving approximately 12,000 volunteer hours from the 41-
person committee. Blisk puts in 225 hours each year on the event. In her three years as a member of the Red Cross Tiffany
Circle, Brenda has been instrumental in growing membership and in organizing and supporting a variety of events and service
projects.
Blisk’s achievements also include being featured as one of NOVA Exec magazine’s “Top Ten Women in Business" in 2011
and as one of five leading business women in Northern Virginia Magazine’s July 2012 issue.
Blisk has received numerous other awards and recognitions. In December 2009, she was inducted into Research Magazine’s
Advisor Hall of Fame. In the same year, she was featured as one of the 87 women executives in the “8th Annual Women
Worth Watching®” issue of Profiles in Diversity Journal.
Also in 2009, she was named one of Virginia Lawyer's Weekly's "Influential Women of Virginia", one of the Washington
Business Journal's “Women Who Mean Business”, and a recipient of Washington Smart CEO's Brava! Women Business
Achievement Award. In 2012, she was inducted into the Brava! Hall of Fame.
