Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF® President’s Message
Happy Independence Day 2017! The country is officially 241 years Young!
We had a very successful Spring Symposium highlighted by Wade Pfau’s new look at reverse mortgages and topped
off by Bob Veres’ look into future revenue models of advisory practices. We had a little social media, banking
landscape, made a case for alternative investments and examined senior housing transition planning in the middle of
the day for a well-rounded program designed to help advisors prepare for the new fiduciary world.
We also congratulated our Leadership Award winner Kathleen Sindell and our Lifetime Achievement Award winner
Ellisa Buie. We had recognized Emily Chiang as the Planner of the Year Award winner in January.
I would like to say goodbye to board member Christine D’Amico as she heads to southwestern Virginia to be closer to
family. Christine has helped us have a successful Golf event this year, as well as many amazing and fun social
networking events. We will miss Christine and wish her the best of success in her move.
What would summer be without a healthy dose of social activity? So, join us for our next happy hour with one hour of
CE scheduled for July 12th at Bazin’s in Vienna, or our membership happy hour on August 8th at Chima in Tysons.
Also, don’t miss the NexGen Retreat on July 26 at a country home in Great Falls for learning and networking sessions
in a relaxed and inviting environment!

and a happy hour with CE, including terrific speakers and a September Ethics class. More details will be coming soon
on these events.
Remember we are always looking for people to get involved and volunteer even if it is just one thing. We hope to see
you at an upcoming event soon.
If you are interested in getting involved on committees and/or on the board in 2018, please contact Howard Pressman,
our current President-elect, and discuss opportunities for you for the next year.
Sincerely,

Successful Advocacy Day on Capital Hill!
The 4th Annual FPA Advocacy Day (June 20th and 21st) saw 78 members from 38 states come together for a day
and half event, which included meetings on the topic of Fiduciary Advocacy, followed a full-day on the Hill in
which FPA members conducted nearly 100 meetings with Representatives, Senators and their staff members with
the goal of promoting full implementation of the DOL Fiduciary Rule and discouraging any legislation that would
otherwise delay, repeal or water down the DOL Rule. This year’s attendance grew by 30% from last year, and by all
accounts next year’s attendance will be even stronger!

Launching the Encore Group, a new FPA NCA Community
A growing number of newer FPA NCA members are just starting out in our profession as career changers. Like many
of our clients, they are launching second careers – taking the Certified Financial Planner coursework either online or
through a local certification program. This new group will encourage networking between established planners and
new entrants to the field, and will offer opportunities for idea sharing and camaraderie for newly credentialed planners
who don’t quite fit the NexGen mold.
If you are interested in joining the group, please let Susan Chesson know: [email protected]

The Current and Long Term Case for Overseas Investing
When compared to prior records, it has been proven that the US Stock Market Capitalization is declining. It has
also been proven that investor timing of the markets often fails, and lower returns are produced. A strong dollar
can be a strong tailwind for an overseas company when selling to the US, increasing their profits while keeping
their costs low. This can create a desirable market for an overseas investor. The overseas market for investing can
increase the investor’s portfolio yield and protect the investor from a US market that has a greater downside risk.
Join us on July 12 at Bazin's for good food, good spirits, great company with your colleagues, and a great
presentation for CE! Register now!
Dan Reilly is a regional consultant for Thornburg Investment Management. He joined Thornburg in 1999 as a
regional consultant and was named managing director in 2004. Prior to joining Thornburg, Dan was the assistant
vice president of Business Development for Wells Real Estate Funds and served as vice president for Keogler
Investment Advisory.
Dan received his Certified Investment Management Analyst® designation from the Investment Management
Consultants Association. He earned his B.A. in Economics from Lynchburg College and an MBA in Finance from
Georgia State University. He is currently registered with FINRA with a Series 24, 7, 63, and 65. Dan serves
