Courses, Degrees & Diplomas/Credential Definitions

Courses, Degrees & Diplomas Fox Valley Technical College provides state-of-the-art occupational training to prepare you for employment in your chosen career. Degree programs include a combination of both core and general education courses.

Core courses focus on building your career-specific knowledge and skills. In addition to a study of relevant theory and processes, these courses often include hands-on instruction using current industry technology. The vast majority of your credits will be comprised of core courses.

General Education courses provide foundation knowledge for those seeking an associate of applied science degree. Associate degree candidates are required to take 21-30 credits in social and behavioral science and at least six credits in communication. Math and science courses are specific to individual programs of study; at least three credits of math or science are required. Some technical diploma programs require varying numbers of general education credits.

Credential DefinitionsAssociate in Applied Science (AAS) degree programs help you prepare for or advance in a particular occupation or field. Most AAS degrees require 60-70 credits and consist of technical studies, general studies and electives. Complete your degree in as little as two years, or attend part-time to fit your schedule. Some or all credits may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year college.

Technical diploma programs help you prepare for a targeted occupation, typically at the entry level. Credit requirements range from 3-70 credits, and many programs offer full- and part-time options. Some credits may be applied to associate degree programs.

Certificate programs include a focused set of courses for skills needed in the workplace. Some credits may bridge into associate degree or technical diploma programs or to a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year college.

Apprenticeships are an earn-while-you-learn program of on-the-job training combined with related classroom instruction for a skilled trade. Both the employer and the apprentice must be contracted with the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards to begin the program.

Email, MyFVTC & Technology

EmailWhen your admissions application was accepted, you were issued an FVTC email address, which was included with your application acceptance letter. If you don’t already have your password, you’ll be prompted to choose one the first time you log in. To log into your email, use your nine-digit student ID with “@fvtc.edu” (ex: [email protected]) and your password. Note: The email address to share with others is NOT your nine-digit ID number. Typically, it is the first eight letters of your last name, followed by the last four digits of your ID number. For example, the email address for student Tom Smith (ID# 123456789) would be [email protected].

FVTC email is the official source for college announcements and college business (such as Financial Aid information). You are responsible for checking your email on a regular basis.

You may forward your FVTC email to a personal account (such as Yahoo!, Gmail or RoadRunner) using MyFVTC. You can set your personal email as the “preferred email” in your account; however, the college is not responsible for misdirected or lost email using this feature.

MyFVTCUse your MyFVTC Account to search and register for classes, access eFAS to view and pay your bill, view grades, change addresses (mailing or email), phone numbers and update other personal information. Use your nine-digit student ID and password to log in to this system.

PasswordUse the same password for all three systems: Email, Blackboard and your MyFVTC Account. You can reset your password by clicking on the link to your MyFVTC Account.

Printing & CopyingEach semester you are enrolled in classes, you will receive a $25 allowance for course-related printing and copying. You can use this allowance to print or copy on any student-accessible printer on campus.

Computer Labs & Computer AccessGeneral student computer labs are located on the second floor and in the library at the Appleton Campus. Business students may also use the lab in A105. At the Oshkosh Riverside Campus, the computer lab is in Room 110. There are also computer labs at each regional center. Individual departments may also have small labs for class-related work with specialized software.

SoftwareSelect software is available for currently enrolled students at discounted prices through a statewide service called the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog (WISC). Access to the store is given 25 days prior to the first day of your first class. Instructions and a link to the system are available at www.fvtc.edu/MyFVTC.

Wireless NetworkNearly all FVTC buildings (including regional centers and training centers) have wireless access, which is open to all (no password required) if you have an 802.11b/g PCMCIA or PCI network card. Look for the FVTC network labeled “Guest” in your list of available networks.You must accept the User Agreement to access the guest wireless network.

File StorageUSB or jump drives are recommended for storing documents and personal files. Drives are available for purchase in the bookstore. All students receive network storage space when on campus. Simply log into a college computer with your Student ID and select Documents in the Start Menu to save and access your files.

Online Learning/Blackboard

Blackboard is a web-based learning environment used to enhance on-campus learning and/or to deliver distance-only learning (online courses) by posting course materials, class discussions, assignments and assessments on the Web.

Accessing BlackboardWhen you register for a course that is designated Hybrid or Online, the FVTC system automatically creates an account for you in Blackboard. Your username will be your student ID and your password will be the same password you set up for your MyFVTC Account.

Logging into Blackboard 1. Go to: www.fvtc.edu/MyFVTC 2. Select the Blackboard button. 3. Enter your username (student ID) and password and click “Login.” 4. On the Blackboard welcome page, you will see your current courses listed. Note: Courses will not be listed until the instructors make the courses available—typically on the first day of the semester. Until then, you may see a message stating “You are not currently enrolled in any courses.”

Disability-Related Services

Fox Valley Technical College is an accessible college community where students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of the educational environment. We want to support your independence and recognize your abilities, not disabilities.

Peer tutoring assistance is available for any credit class in which you are not maintaining a grade of C or higher. Requests must be submitted before mid-term of the course. There is no fee for this service.

A peer program means that students help other students. The peer tutor may be concurrently enrolled in the course or she/he may have previously completed the course. Tutors are required to obtain academic references and provide pertinent qualifications. Qualified tutors may not exist for some courses or for certain hours in the day; however, every effort will be made to provide a tutor.

Wo/Men’s Educational Bureau This free service is available to both female and male single parents who are in transition and displaced homemakers (those who have cared for your family at home without pay and are no longer supported by another household member’s income or public assistance OR are unemployed or underemployed and/or your youngest dependent child will become ineligible for TANF (AFDC) assistance within two years). Services include career planning, individual needs assessment/counseling, Starting Point Workshops and referrals to appropriate college and community resources.

Non-Traditional OccupationsA non-traditional occupation is defined as any occupation in which women or men comprise less than 25% of the workforce. For example, for women: firefighter, welder, or automotive technician; for men: nurse, interior designer, or administrative professional. In the past, most women chose careers in teaching, nursing or office administration. Men looked at futures in construction, factory work, or mechanics. Times have changed! At Fox Valley Tech, we want you to pursue your dreams. We believe you can be anything you want to be!

Financial Wellness Center Many responsible students go through financial challenges. The Financial Wellness Center offers a variety of services to meet the individual needs of each student. Counseling for VeteransReturning veterans often have specific counseling needs related to re-entry and funding for school. If you’re a returning veteran, you can access additional services and resources specific to these unique needs.

Peer MentoringPeer mentors have specific knowledge about college resources and can help you with your transition to college. Mentors are good listeners and can offer ideas and suggestions for college services, activities and student organizations that meet your specific needs.

Enrollment Services can assist you with admissions, enrollment, transcripts and graduation.

Transcripts & VerificationsAn official FVTC transcript is a complete record of your enrollment at our college. You may request transcripts of your records any time via your MyFVTC Account or at www.fvtc.edu/Transcripts.

If you need enrollment verification for loan deferments, insurance coverage, “good student” auto insurance discounts, etc., contact Enrollment Services to submit a request.

GraduationWhen you have completed most of your degree or diploma program requirements, you will receive an email with instructions for graduation. Be sure to complete the online application for graduation by the deadline. In the meantime, if you’d like more information, visit www.fvtc.edu/Graduation.

Academic CalendarThe academic calendar includes dates for registration, fees due, beginning and end of term, textbook buyback, etc. To view the college’s academic calendar online, visit www.fvtc.edu/AcademicCalendar.

Continuing Student Registration for ClassesContinuing program students register according to credits accumulated toward graduation. You will receive an email notification of your designated registration date and time.

AttendanceStudents in degree programs and credit courses are expected to attend and participate in classes regularly. Attendance is the responsibility of the individual student, including notification and completion of missed coursework as required by the instructor.

Repeating a CourseWhen a student repeats a course, the grade of the most recently completed course will be used in calculating the cumulative grade point average (GPA).

Student Records - FERPAIt is the policy of Fox Valley Technical College to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). This act is designed to protect the privacy of educational records; to establish the right of students to inspect their records; and to provide guidelines for the retention, disclosure and correction of those records.

Adding or Dropping ClassesTo enroll in or drop classes, use your MyFVTC Account or visit Enrollment Services. Once you register for a class, you are responsible for the cost of the class. If your plans change, you must drop the class or you will still be liable for the payment. Find information about class payments at www.fvtc.edu/Pay, and information about refunds at www.fvtc.edu/Refund.

Program WithdrawalIn accordance with the Graduation Requirements Policy, if you do not take a class within three consecutive terms (including summer) you will be removed from your program. If you wish to re-enter your program or any other, you must submit an online application and meet the college’s admission requirements, as well as graduation requirements, in effect at the time of re-entry.

To withdraw from a program or from the college, please submit a Program Withdrawal Form. If you are changing or adding programs, contact counseling services at 920-735-5696.

Financial Aid

What is financial aid?Financial aid consists of grants, loans and/or work study employment. The actual aid that you can receive depends on your eligibility according to state and federal regulations, the availability of funds and the number of students applying for aid.

How do I receive financial aid?Apply! You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for aid. The application is available online at www.fafsa.gov. You will need your previous year’s federal tax return. Instant online help is available as you complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov. Before your financial aid application will be processed, you must be admitted to the college in a program that is eligible for financial aid.

When do I apply for financial aid? • TheFAFSAisavailableonJanuary1eachyear. • Applicationsareacceptedthroughouttheaidyear.The standard aid year covers fall, spring and summer terms, in that order. • TheprioritydateisApril1.Ifyouhavenotsubmittedall your information by this date, it may be too late for certain aid programs.

When do I receive my aid?Grants and loans disburse directly to your account after the 10th day of the term. You must complete all required information before the aid will disburse. If there is a balance due to you, a refund will be issued by either paper check or eRefunding. Please see www.fvtc.edu/eFAS for more details on how to receive your refund electronically.

Important Financial Aid DatesJanuary 1 FAFSA is available for students seeking financial aid for the next aid year. Visit www.fafsa.gov.April 1 Priority application date for completing the FAFSA for the next academic year and submitting all requested documents to the Financial Aid Office.June 30 Financial Aid applications are accepted throughout the aid year. The last day to submit the FAFSA for the summer term is June 30. Census Date (10th class day of each term) At the census date, student enrollment is reviewed to determine the number of credits that you are enrolled in. Aid may have to be adjusted at that time to reflect the proper amount based on credits taken.

Student Finance

Important Payment InformationOnce you register for a class, you are responsible for the cost of the class. If your plans change, you must drop the class using your MyFVTC Account or you will still be liable for the payment. The date you drop a class will determine the amount of refund due, if any. For important information about the refund policy, visit www.fvtc.edu/Refund.

How do I receive my bill?Billing notifications are sent to your FVTC email address if you are admitted to a program (seeking a degree or certificate). It is critical that you monitor your FVTC email account. If you are not admitted into a program, your bill will be mailed to your mailing address.You can view your bill online via eFAS at www.fvtc.edu/eFAS. You will log in using your Student ID and password.

When are fees due?Fees are due 10 days prior to the class start date. If you choose to enroll in the payment plan, your payment dates will be distributed over three months.

What is a payment plan?The FVTC payment plan is an option that provides you more time to pay your bill. It consists of three installment dates for making payments on eligible charges. There is a $25.00 fee for signing up for this option, due at the time of enrollment. You must have a balance of $300.00 or more to enroll in this option. See www.fvtc.edu/PayingForCollege for more details regarding specific due dates for your enrollment term.

How do I pay my bills?FVTC accepts a variety of payment methods. • eCheckisthepreferredmethodofpayment.Itisafreeoption available via eFAS at www.fvtc.edu/eFAS. They will process cash, check and money order payments for tuition. Past Due AccountsA financial hold is placed on any account that has a past due balance. This hold will prevent future enrollment.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students during all semesters of enrollment in a Fox Valley Technical College associate degree, technical diploma or apprenticeship program. Scholarships are funded by private donors, including individuals, organizations and businesses, and are administered by the FVTC Foundation. Best of all, scholarships do not have to be repaid.

Scholarships are competitive and based on criteria established by the donor, which may include program of enrollment, residency, academic performance and/or need.

Over 700 scholarships are available each year. Near the beginning of each semester, you’ll be notified via your FVTC email account that the Foundation is accepting scholarship applications, along with the deadline for submission. A link to the online application, instructions, and tips is included in the email. If you apply, you should verify that your MyFVTC account information is current and contact two instructors who are willing to submit positive evaluations of your performance and academic characteristics. You are encouraged to submit an application each semester.

Bookstore/ Community First Credit Union

BookstoreBooks, supplies, and school spirit merchandise are sold in the FVTC Bookstores located on the Appleton and Oshkosh Riverside campuses. Both locations offer a complete selection of new, used, and digital textbooks. Some textbooks are also available for rental. Bring your class study list when purchasing books and materials, as well as your FVTC student ID if you will be using Financial Aid to make purchases.

Books can be purchased online at fvtc.bncollege.com, yourschoolyourbookstore.com, or when using your MyFVTC account. You can also stop in either of the two FVTC Bookstores to make your purchases in person.

Textbook BuybackThere are three book buybacks each year, typically in December, May and August. Both FVTC Bookstores buy back books no matter where you purchased them, often at approximately 50% of the new or used purchased price. Community First Credit UnionTake care of your class payments, personal banking and auto or home loan applications without ever leaving campus. Student Life CenterThe Student Life Center, located on the Appleton Campus, offers a variety of services to help you connect with other students and make your experience here more enjoyable. You can play pool, ping pong or foosball, watch TV or a movie on the big screen, or purchase discount passes for movies or other attractions. Or, just hang out with your friends. Need a stamp to mail a letter? Forgot to make copies of a paper for class? Need to use a fax machine? EventsThere’s always something going on at FVTC! From comedians to hypnotists, nationally known speakers and leadership seminars, caricature artists to stress relief; all found on the Appleton and Oshkosh campuses throughout the school year. There are also many family events like our annual Drive-In Movie in the parking lot, or Family Movie Nights with free popcorn and hot dogs.

TripsIf you’d like to get away, there are several day, weekend and extended trips – all at a reduced price! Take a day trip with friends to Great America or a Brewers game. Or enjoy a weekend with your family at the Tundra Lodge in Green Bay or the Wilderness in Wisconsin Dells. Or, you might want to take a spring break trip to a tropical destination.

Fitness CenterThe Fitness Center is located in Room E170 on the Appleton Campus and features a variety of exercise equipment available for free use by students. Included in the center are cardiovascular and strength equipment, as well as shower and locker facilities. The Fitness Center opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Several health and wellness programs are offered to students and staff throughout the year. A fitness coordinator is on duty 27 hours per week, August through May. AthleticsFVTC is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and offers men’s and women’s basketball. The Foxes compete against fellow technical colleges in Madison and Milwaukee, as well as the University of Wisconsin two year schools and community colleges in northern Illinois.

Civic EngagementAs a Fox Valley Tech student, there are many opportunities to become an active participant in your community. Whether you want to enhance your resume with volunteer experience, learn more about social issues, or find out about local, state and national elections, the Student Life Center can assist you. In addition to maintaining a list of many volunteer opportunities throughout the region, Student Life offers individualized volunteer matching, monthly service opportunities and speakers and events to help you become more knowledgeable about social issues that affect your community.

The Multicultural Student Services office is a single point of contact for all FVTC minority students – African American, Asian, Hispanic and Native American. The services are designed to enhance the success and retention of those minority students attending Fox Valley Technical College.

The Hmong Student Union encourages students to experience various cultures of the United States and other countries.

Multicultural ClubThe Multicultural Club provides opportunities to learn about and experience aspects of various cultures of the United States and other countries. The club also educates about the cultures, nationalities, ethnic groups and languages of our increasingly diverse community in the Fox Valley region. All students are welcome to participate.

Transfer Credits to FVTC

Many students come to Fox Valley Tech with college credits they’ve already earned, either while in high school or at other colleges and universities. It’s also possible to be granted credit for career-related knowledge and skills you’ve already mastered.

Credit for prior learning is the acceptance of credits from other regionally accredited institutions of higher education. You may be able to transfer those credits to Fox Valley Tech and apply them toward your program requirements. A nurse is on the Appleton campus for patient care several hours a week. Appointments are encouraged. We do not have prescription medication, but the nurse can refer you to a doctor’s care if needed.

Child Care/Health Services

Parent/Child CenterThe Fox Valley Technical College Parent/Child Center is located at the Appleton campus. We’re open to FVTC students and staff, as well as to anyone in the area who is looking for safe, high-quality, and affordable child care.

The center is licensed for 120 children, ages 6 weeks through 11 years. We provide for the educational, social and physical needs of the children, while also providing a learning experience for college students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program.

Contracted child care is provided on a full-time or part-time basis. Drop-in care is not available.

Academic Standing & Student Conduct

Academic Progress StandardsIt is expected that students will make satisfactory progress each semester they are enrolled. Satisfactory progress at Fox Valley Technical College means achieving a minimum semester grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (grade of C). The academic progress policy applies to all program-declared degree and diploma students carrying six or more academic credits.

Academic ProbationA program student will be placed on academic probation if his/her semester grade point average falls below 2.0 (grade of C). While on probation, a student will be allowed to enroll for no more than 12 credits per semester. During the time a student is on probation, a hold will be placed on their student record prohibiting registration. The registration hold will be released once the student meets with a counselor and completes a satisfactory academic success plan or completes a student success workshop.

Academic SuspensionA student will be suspended from a program after two consecutive semesters of academic probation with semester GPAs of less than 2.0 (grade of C). The length of a program suspension is one semester, exclusive of the summer term. Students may enroll in non-credit courses or academic preparation courses during the semester of academic suspension.

Student ConductFox Valley Technical College believes in creating and maintaining a learning environment that values academic excellence, institutional integrity, justice, equity, civility and diversity. For the academic and personal development of all students, the college requires the behavior of all students to be compatible with the mission and values of the college. Students are required to conduct themselves in a positive and appropriate manner at all times while attending all college-sponsored activities, both on or off any district campus.

Any student who has paid an enrollment fee, registered or enrolled for classes with or through the college, or otherwise entered into any other contractual relationship with the college to take instruction is required to abide by the code of conduct. Terminology

Academic Advising: Process where you are assigned to a faculty member or a trained adviser who helps you plan and implement immediate and long-term academic and vocational goals. Your advisor is assigned approximately one month after you start class. You can find your advisor’s name online in MyFVTC.

Catalog Number (or state course number): The eight-digit number that identifies the series of classes for a specific subject.

Class Number: A five-digit number that represents a specific class date and time. This is the number you will use when registering.

Credit: Recognition of attendance or performance in an instructional activity.

Credit course: A course that, if successfully completed, can be applied toward the number of courses required for achieving a degree, diploma, certificate, or other formal award.

Degree: An award conferred by FVTC as official recognition for the successful completion of a program.

Degree Progress Report: A tool to help you plan your classes so you can graduate from your chosen program.

Enrollment Appointment: A date and time that you are assigned to register for classes for the next term.

FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All students interested in financial aid must fill out this free federal application form.

Grade-point average (GPA): The sum of grade points earned divided by the number of courses taken.

Term GPA: GPA for the term, which is used to determine your status on the Dean’s List.

Cumulative GPA: Includes all classes taken at that institution. Cumulative GPA determines honor status for graduation.

Public institution: An educational institution whose programs and activities are operated by publicly elected or appointed school officials, and which is supported primarily by public funds.

Requisite (Pre and Co):

Pre-requisite: A course that requires you to be either currently enrolled or have completed before you are able to enroll in the next course. Note that you cannot be enrolled in the course with a pre-requisite in the same term.

Co-requisite: A course in which a student either needs to have completed before registering or currently enrolled in the same term.

Term: FVTC has three separate terms per year: Spring, Summer and Fall.

Transfer student: A student entering the institution for the first time but known to have previously attended a postsecondary institution at the same level (e.g., undergraduate). The student may transfer with or without credit.

Tuition: Amount of money charged to students for instructional services. Tuition is charged per credit.

Tutoring: May range from one-on-one tutoring in specific subjects to tutoring in an area such as math, reading, or writing. Many tutors are college students.
