    65 YEARS19472012

A message from our Executive Director...

Remember as a kid when you played outside until Mom called you home fo

    r dinner?

Then youd go out again and play until dark.

Most of todays kids probably wont have those memories. Children spend half as much time ou

    tdoors as they did

20 years ago. The average American child partakes in just seven minutes of unstructured, outdoo

    r play each day but,

alarmingly, spends over seven hours per day in front of an electronic screen (TV, computer, smar

    tphone).

A typical child tells you they prefer to play inside because thats where all the outlets are.

Free time is at a premium in our over-scheduled, deadline-driven society. So, call us old-fashione

    d, but we still

believe that kids need to be kids, and experiencing the joys of outdoor play is a major part of th

    at.

This summer, the Fox Valley Park District is participating in the 10 Million Kids Outdoors camp

aign with the National Recreation and Park Association and

    the National Wildlife Federation.

Its all about reconnecting children with nature and getting them involved a No Child Left Ins

ide initiative to get children tuned in to the outdoors.

Theres no better place for unstructured, outdoor play than a local park and there are 164 of t

hem throughout the District. Chances are, there is

one within walking distance from where you live.

Id encourage everybody to discover and explore the new Blackberry Farm. Weve just complet

ed a major revitalization, and the kids are sure

to love the adventure playground and paddle boats, among other exciting features.

And what child doesnt love a water park? My generation had the local swimming pool, but tod

ays kids have Splash Country Water Park

and Phillips Park Family Aquatic Center with all their crazy-fun slides, spray guns and sandy bea

    ch playgrounds.

A season pass is a great, affordable way for families to enjoy these water parks all summer. One

pass is good for both water parks every day

and pass holders enjoy early admission on weekdays as well.

Just thinking about being outside makes me feel like a kid again. Heres to our kids experiencing

    that feeling, too!

The Fox Valley Park District is taking a leading role in the battle against childhood obesity. Teaching children the importance of exercise and nutrition provides them a solid foundation for a healthy future.

In partnership with local agencies, the District helped create the Making Kane County Fit for Kids campaign. A major component of this campaign is the Fit Kids 2020 Plan, which provides guidelines, strategies and action steps to put children on a path toward healthy living.

The plan includes initiatives and ideas that communities and residents can apply to a common goal. By working together, we create an environment where children make smart lifestyle choices that are beneficial toward their long-term health and well-being. Visit makingkanefitforkids.org.
