Dear Friends, These days I notice two things when I come to the glass doors of St. Mary Church. First, just outside the front doors on the right side, I see the engraved granite plaque that reminds us that our present church was built in 1968--our present facility has served us well for almost half a century. The church underwent a renovation a few years ago. We're now focusing on work that needs to be done on the social hall/office/classroom build-ing. The current proposed restroom remodel, plumbing renovation, and security system installation are all part of this effort. The second thing I notice as I approach the doors is big fundraising thermometer inside near the back pew recording our progress--inch by inch--toward our $30,000 goal. Thank you to all the individuals, families, and parish groups who have so generously contributed to this ef-fort. With your help, our hope is to begin these projects in coming weeks. We who are at St. Mary and St. Anne now are beneficiaries of the generosity of more than a century of faithful members and stewards. We, in turn, are privileged to pass on these gifts to future generations. Thank you for your part in guarding and passing on this sacred trust. Stay tuned for proposed projects at St. Anne Mission. In Christ, Fr. Tom

Queridos amigos,

Fr. Tom

Participation in the Mass can begin from a very young age. Don’t be content to let your kids simply sit there and pick it up by osmosis! Help them to understand the parts of the Mass, talk to them about why we do the things we do, how all of it is meant to help us grow closer to God! Even when they don’t fully understand, their par-ticipation at Mass now is forming them in the ways we worship God and what the Mass is for! Does the way you participate in the Mass com-municate to your children the awesome im-portance of what is going on?

Quote of the Week

The man born blind represents the human person marred by sin, who desires to know the truth about himself and his personal des-tiny, but is prevented from doing so by congenital illness. Only Jesus can cure him: He is "the light of the world" (Jn 9,5). Hand-ing himself over to him, every human being who is spiritually blind from birth has the fresh possibility of "coming to the light", namely to supernatural life. Along with the healing of the blind man, the Gospel highlights the unbelief of the Pharisees, who refuse to acknowledge the mir-acle, since Jesus worked it on the sabbath, in their judgement vio-lating the Mosaic law. Thus, an eloquent paradox emerges, that Christ himself sums up with the words: "I have come into the world for judgement so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind" (Jn 9,39). For the one who meets Christ, there is no other alternative: ei-ther he recognizes his need of him and of his light, or he chooses to do without. In the case of doing without Christ, the same presumption prevents both the one who thinks he is just before God and the one who considers himself an atheist, from being open to authentic conversion. Dear brothers and sisters, may no one close his soul to Christ! He gives to the one who accepts him the light of faith, the light that can transform the heart, and, consequently, mentalities, social, political, and economic situations dominated by sin. "... I do be-lieve, Lord!" (Jn 9,38). With the man born blind, may each of us be ready humbly to profess our own attachment to him. -St. John Paul II, Angelus address, 3/10/02

Q. Why does the priest wear pink a couple of times during the year?

A: The liturgical color rose is used on two Sundays of the year– Gaudete Sunday in Advent, and Laetare Sunday in Lent. The names come from the first word of the Latin text entrance chant for each day, and both mean “Rejoice!” Both are small breaks in our penitential practice. Music can be bigger and more joyful, there can be more decoration in the church. The document Redemptionis Sacramentum tells us about why we have different liturgical colors: “The purpose of a variety of color of the sacred vestments is to give effective expression even out-wardly to the specific character of the mysteries of faith being cel-ebrated and to a sense of Christian life’s passage through the course of the liturgical year.” (121) The point of moving to rose for this one Sunday is to emphasize the fact that as Christians we are to remember the joy of the Resur-rection, even in the midst of penance, as well as the struggles, griefs, and pains of life.
