Pastor’s Letter April 20/21

I am sure you are familiar with the gospel of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. It is the story in which Jesus asks his disciples to feed the multitude of his followers. The disciples answer the Lord with this objection — they have neither money nor resources. In fact the only food at hand is the five loaves and two fish held by a child. What happens next is a miracle. All are fed. How did it happen?

The gospel does not say that Jesus multiplied the fish, observed the now sufficient resources, and had the disciples calmly distribute the plentiful food. There is, rather, an air of anxiety in the gospel. Despite this apparent lack of necessities, Jesus tells the disciples to give thanks and begin to distribute the little they have. They did not run out.

Miracles, the word meaning literally to see or to look, are all in the seeing. They happen every day and are all around us but often we do not see them. It is a miracle to be alive but sometimes it takes something to break through our blindness so that we can see the miracle. A loved one survives an illness, a child is born, and suddenly we see the miracle of life. Some might read this and say: “Oh sure, but what about real miracles — the unusual and unexpected?”

The day after the multiplication of the loaves and fish, the crowd is searching for Jesus. When they catch up to him at Capernaum he challenges them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs (understood the miracle) but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” They liked what they saw, not to mention full stomachs, but did not yet understand that the miracle was all in the thanksgiving and sharing.

This gospel and potentially this miracle are common things. I cannot think of a day in life when the question of having too little doesn't come up. It always seems that we have too little of what we need: too little time, energy, money, patience, and so on. But I have also experienced the miracle. Take what seems to be too little, bless it, give thanks for it, and share it. You will not run out.

We read this story in the season of the resurrection because the early disciples wondered how they would live as Jesus taught. What could the resurrection of one man mean to a world with so much need? We are here because they could also hear Jesus' voice saying: “ Never mind. Bless what you have, give thanks, and pass it on.”

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Living the L

ach Day

The Course:

A series on faith and belief for the modern Catholic By Fr. Mike Vetrano

Monday, May 6 at 7:30 in the church

The Moral Teaching of the Church Since Vatican II The Second Vatican Council challenged moral theologians and catechists to renew our moral teaching with an emphasis on discipleship, conscience, and responsibility in living the Christian life. This evening will explore the roots of this call, the emphasis of the council, and where the church is going as a moral teacher in this millennium. We will discuss how we teach and are taught about sin, virtue, forgiveness, and responsibility. We will also look at the ways that the church’s own successes and failures have influenced its witness in society.

l 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal

Our Lord is grateful to those who sacrifice in His name to build the Kingdom of God.

No gift is too small when it is offered with love to serve others.

We Provide the Roof Over Their Head – They Make it Their Home “If it wasn’t for Catholic Charities, I would probably be in a nursing home,” a resident of Catholic Charities Mary’s Manor confessed. “I wouldn’t have independence. I would have signed myself into a nursing home when I got this lung condition.” Instead, she goes to Bingo twice a week, the beach during the summer, is part of a crocheting club, and helps serve the meals for other residents at Mary’s Manor.

“Without this, what would I do? I can’t run around now. I really love it here,” the resident confessed.

On Long Island, it can be difficult for seniors to find affordable housing. About 30 years ago, Catholic Charities took on that mission and opened 16 housing sites, with 13,000 residents. Mary’s Manor is the second oldest com-munity of housing maintained by Catholic Charities and supported with help from the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS Mr. Joseph Basar, Music teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons, presented a two hour master class on “The Blues” for the entire student body. The program was an interactive instructional assembly with enrichment performances by the advanced guitar students who illustrated techniques, the Junior and Senior Dance Troupes who performed an original ballet to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, The Junior Tap team who offered “Hit the Road, Jack”, and the Hamptones who sang “Basin Street Blues” accompanied by the Suzuki String ensemble. This program underscores the emphasis on the Fine Arts at OLH!

Registration for the 2013-2014 school year is now open to parishioners and community members. Parents who may be interested in considering beginning their children’s education in kindergarten through grade 8 at the Southampton campus are urged to request information packets as soon as possible. ¿Hijos dispuestos a confiar?

Sharing the Gospel Your daddy knows when you are talking to him. You know when your daddy is talking to you. Your eternal Father wants you to recognize his voice, too. God's voice al-ways says good things to you. His voice warns when you are in danger. He tells you the right thing to do. He tells you how to stay away from bad things. His voice keeps you on the road to heaven. Listen to him. Prayer I want to recognize and hear your voice, O God. Something to Draw Draw a shepherd and three sheep. Put your name on one of the sheep.
