READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23, 2018
Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.
FROM THE SAINTS
Advent: O Come, O Come Emmanuel. One of the most beloved Advent songs “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” really sums up what the season of Advent is all about. It gives voice to the longing and antici-pation which we try to cultivate these four weeks, as we look to the coming of Christ. We are all familiar with the verses of this hymn, many of which we can sing by heart. They perfectly capture the longing and expectation that Israel felt, as they waited for the Messiah. “O Come Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear.” or “O come Rod of Jesse’s stem from every foe deliver them, that trust your mighty power to save and give them victory over the grave.” Israel waited for a Savior to free them from the bondage of sin, we look for that same Savior, the one who comes to “ransom” and “deliver” us. As we journey through Advent it is with both expectant joy that we look for our Redeemer, but also with a serious glance at our own preparedness to receive that same Redeemer. Turning back to the hymn we see that there is more to this hymn than meets the eye. The verses of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” are based on the “O Antiphons”, which are the short phrases recited during Evening Prayer, in the last days leading up to Christmas. They all begin with the exclamation “O” hence the name. O, Sapientia (O Wisdom) O, Adonai, (O Lord) O, Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) O, Clavis David (O Key of David) O, Oriens , (O Daystar) O, Rex gentium (O King of the Nations) O, Emmanuel (O God with us) The beginning letters, taken backwards, form a Latin acrostic: ERO CRAS! “Tomorrow, I will be there.” We call out to the Lord through this hymn during this season of preparation. He Himself answers our call, “Ero Cras!” “Tomorrow, I will come.” Let us allow the words of this hymn to be our model of prayer as we prepare for the coming of the Lord at Christmas. We cry out O Come O Come Emmanuel, but are our hearts ready for his arrival. Come, O God with us, ransom your people. Come, O Wisdom, and show us the paths of true knowledge. Come, O Key of David, and open to us the gates of heav-en. Come, O Dayspring, disperse death’s shadow. Come, O King of the Nations, rule in our hearts.
