Jeremiah t4-5, :r7-:g lr Corinthians 12:3L-13:13 ot :-3:4-13 ILuke 4:zr-3o

Are you a conflict-avoider or a conflict-engager? Do you thrive on debate, or

would you prefer everyone get along? I tend to be a conflict-avoider. I know

conflict is part of life and that it can be a source of creativity, but l'd still rather

avoid it or quickly smooth it over.

Unfortunately, conflict-avoidance can be as harmful as aggression.

ln today's reading, as often happens, conflict surrounds Jesus. No sooner does

the crowd in his hometown synagogue lavish Praise on him than they turn and

criticize him as a simpleton, the son of a lowly carPenter. You can almost hear

them sneer, "Wait... is this only the son of Joseph? What could he possibly have

to offer?" Jesus responds that his mission is not just for the locals but for all,

including the outcast and the unwelcome. lt's an insult to the crowd, who

furiously try to throw him off a cliff. lt's conflict-avoidance at its worst-removethe conflict by destroying the one with whom we disagree.

When prayers aren't answered "our wayr" when we're not given what we

"deserver" When SOmeOne *'Unworthy" reCeiVeS adUlatiOn, We Can feel anger-

even fury-toward God. We may want to throw God off a cliff...or at least

stomp away and seethe for a while.lnstead, what if we invite God into our heaftS even while We're angry?

Welcoming the One by whom we feel wounded may lead us to a new

understanding and a deepened faith. Giving God a second chance doesn't mean

denying our anger; on the contrary, we offer our anger to God as a deeply

human response and ask God to stay with us, to speak gracious words to us,

and ultimately, to transform us.

de dr PAD Rf,

I'm engaged to a wonde{ul woman wtta was raised in a

Protatantfaith tradition. I want her to become Catlnlic. Slrcsays all the Catlnlk rituals aren\ fiecessary ta get ta heauen.

Wlwt un I say to conuince her?

Your fianc6e is correct about heaven: God has willedthe salvation of everyone-not just Catholics (DogmaticConstitution on the Church fLumcn Gentium),13). Butbeing Catholic isn't only about getting to heaven. Earthlybenefits abound!Take the Mass: Holy Communion gives us Jesus' veryBody and Blood. The sacrament of reconciliation bringsus peace and comfort. Our saints and our special devotionto the Blessed Mother inspire us. Our Church leaders-ordained and religious*bring Christ to our everydaylives. Our Catholic hymns and prayer traditions help us

offer praise and thanks in a unique way.Once we get to heaven, the need for the distinctions thathelp us walk our path on Earth dissolve. But until we getthere, we shouldn't follow the beliefs and practices of theCatholic Church simply because it's the religion of ourparents or spouse; we should follow them because webelieve they show us how to deepen our relationship withGod by living asJesus wanted us to.So while "all the Catholic rituals" do prepare us {brheaven, they also enrich and inform our earthly lives inways we can't find anywhere else. I thank God for theCatholic Church every day-and you should too.

TRADITION: Shrove Tuesday is the last day of what traditionally was called"Shrovetide," the week preceding the beginning of Lent. The word itself,Shrovetide, is the English equivalent for "Carnival," which is derived fromthe Latin words cornem levore, meaning "to take away the flesh.".Shrovetide was the time to cast off things of the flesh and to prepare

spiritually for Lent Actually, the English term provides the best meaning

for this period. "To shrive" meant to hear confessions. . .. Pancakes (and

donuts) were prepared and enjoyed, because in so doing a family depletedtheir eggs, milk, butter, and fat which were part of the Lenten fast.
