Four Steps to Qualifying for

Power Rebates

Why Go Green?

3

Power Management Makes Sense

•The average desktop PC wastes nearly half the power it consumes

•Servers lose approximately 1/3 of their power as heat

•90% of desktops don’t use power management settings 1

What are the Benefits of Going Green?

•Save from $26 - $60 per workstation1

•Take advantage of power management rebates from utility companies – up to $15 per PC!

•Help save the Environment!

» CO2 emissions: The global IT and communications industry accounts for approximately 2% of global CO2 emissions2

» There are currently over 1 billion PCs, projected to be 2.25 billion by 20153

What are these Rebate Programs?

Example of Power Saver Program Application

Why Doesn’t Every Organization Apply for these Energy Rebates?

8

The Challenges of Qualifying for a Rebate

•Understanding your power company’s rebate requirements

•Collecting all the required information

•Effectively demonstrating how the organization is meeting rebate requirements

What are the Potential Requirements for Power Rebate Eligibility?

10

Power Management Solution Requirements

» New: Must be a new installation or an upgrade;

» Centralized: Must allow centralized control of power management settings;

» Retained: May need to be kept operational for a fixed period from the initial installation date and further provide some evidence of this commitment;

» Qualified: May need to be from a vendor that is approved on a Qualifying Software List maintained by the utility or other third party organization;

» Reporting-Capable: Must have reporting capabilities for monitoring and validation of the energy savings, and must also provide the ability to catalog the systems and locations under power management control

PC Power Management Solutions are typically required to be:

Steps to Qualifying for an Energy Savings Rebate

12

Step One: Devise a Plan

• Identify any incentives your local power company offers

•Understand requirements and get the forms to complete.

•Typically three general scenarios for power management software requirements:» No Formal List- of-Requirements

» Formal-Requirements-Customer Sponsored Vendor

» Formal Requirements-Pre-Approved Vendor List

•Formulate an energy savings goal» Example: Aim to have Desktop and Laptop PCs idle or sleeping for 16+ hours

per day, instead of running 24 x 7 x 365

13

Step Two: Apply to Your Power Company

•Calculate your savings

•Submit a formal or informal plan (varies by power company)

14

Step Three: Implement Your Plan

• Purchase and install Power Management software, etc.

• Lumension® Endpoint Power Management:» Minimizes Energy Consumption and IT TCO

» Increases Visibility and Control over the IT Environment

» Simplifies Power Conservation Policy Deployment in Complex Environments

» Simultaneously Optimizes IT Power Consumption and Endpoint Security Posture

» Monetizes the Effect of Power Management Policies with Integrated Power Savings Reports

15

Step Four: Document Your Results

•Effectively demonstrate reduced power consumption and apply for eligible power savings rebates from your local power management company for taking effective steps in reducing your carbon footprint.

16

Step Four: Document Your Results (Cont’d)

•Power companies will typically want to see the following: »Proof of installed agents

»Proof of purchase of a license

»Proof of power savings over time

Recommendations

18

Best Practices

• Implement Power Management software» Hibernate desktops after hours

» Require a monitor-off policy

» Studies show 250 to 300kWh/ year per PC

• Replace old desktops & monitors with EnergyStar rated models» Could save 140kWh/ year per PC

• Virtualize servers» Reduce server count

» Reduce cooling requirements

• Maintain Manageability» Must allow systems to be patched, AV updated, RDC, etc.
