The U.S. Supreme Court ruled long ago that “Freedom of speech does not mean you can yell fire in a crowded hall.” Letters to the editor also have limits. We encourage challenging letters. They can be tough, but not acrimonious; attack positions, but not persons. We seek a sense of balance and decorum; we reject the inflammatory, and respect reasonableness. Criticism is welcome; slanderous statements are not. Our aim is to create an atmosphere for vigorous discussion.

Wii Bowling LeagueBy Linda Telli

The Wii Bowling League ended its season on April 5th with Kathy & Phil Schultz as bowling champions. They defeated John and Tina Vitello who had been the Wii Champions for the last four years. Kathy & Phil made the match even more exciting when they bowled a perfect “300” the last game. Tina & John still had high series for the season with a total pin score of 794.

The semi-finals were followed by a league luncheon. After the luncheon, the two remaining teams, Kathy & Phil Schultz and Tina & John Vitello played for the championship. A prize was given for the first and second place teams as well as high series for the season.

The league, which was a 12-week program kept 88 Four Seasons residents active and entertained during the winter. The large screen television in the ballroom was transformed into our bowling alley on Mondays, Thursdays and Friday mornings. Each session lasted approximately 1 ½ hours and attracted residents wanting to know what all the fun was about.

As always, a special thanks to Allan Blumenthal who graciously takes on the tedious task of computing our scores. My husband Ron verifies the results. I certainly could not run the program without their support and help.

This year we completed our eighth season and everyone seems to enjoy the game more and more each year.

Clubhouse CommitteeBy Donna Goldsmith

The Clubhouse Committee has been created to oversee the interior of our clubhouse. Our mission is to make recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding organization, efficient use of space, decorating, replacing worn furniture, repainting, etc. The Board will then make the final decision whether to accept or decline the recommendation.

Phase I will, hopefully, begin shortly and we need the help of all residents. Please remove any personal items you may have at the clubhouse. We will begin to remove clutter and reorganize as soon as possible. We will continue to move forward with each phase on an as needed basis.

We are looking forward to making our clubhouse more user friendly, and attractive.

Letter to the EditorVolunteeringBy Linda Telli

My husband and I have been volunteering at Four Seasons since we moved here 12 years ago.

Recently, the negativity generated by some of our residents has me questioning why I volunteer at all. Remember we are not only volunteers who give up numerous hours in the hopes of improving the Four Season’s community but also pay the same $190 a month that each of you do.

Constructive criticism is one thing. Sarcastic and derogatory remarks are not only unnecessary but certainly not appreciated.

The Association recently increased a line item in our budget as the lack of volunteers on the Landscaping & Grounds Committee has forced them to hire a professional to fill the void. If the behavior of some of our residents does not improve then you are going to be looking at more and more professionals being hired to replace the free line item you receive from the volunteers.

If you have enough time to write, email and research what the volunteers are doing wrong, then you certainly have the time to join a committee and become a positive rather than a negative force for our community.

As you now know, we have two openings on our Board of Trustees. You will have received a notice that outlines the procedure that has been instituted to fill these vacancies. It was paramount that this process be transparent to everyone. In other words, we wanted everyone to know how we would proceed without any questions. I believe that we have accomplished this task and now are awaiting interested applicants. Please consider applying if you have interest and time to support your community.

The Board of Trustees vacancies are in many ways symbolic of this community’s need for volunteers at all levels of the organization. We need interested volunteers to assist us in managing a very large community. This community does not run itself. There are a diminishing number of volunteers who are dedicated and spend a lot of time making this organization tick. The emphasis that I want to make is on the word diminishing. We have a trend where fewer and fewer people have volunteered. This is especially noticeable on the Landscaping and Grounds Committee. Probably the largest committee, it is woefully low in volunteers. In fact, we had to authorize the addition of a part time professional to supplement the volunteers. This is costing the community and you money. Without this addition, we most likely could not fulfill the landscaping mission. So, what does this mean long term? I really do not know! I will say that if the trend continues we may have to add additional resources which could mean additional expenses. This may translate into a monthly dues increase. We are not raising the monthly fee but it is a real future possibility.

Volunteerism is what makes the community work. We cannot continue to do what needs to be done without them. Consider volunteering and simply don’t say to yourself that the other guy can do it!!

The Safety and Security Committee will be hosting their second MEET AND GREET - “COFFEE WITH THE COPS” Program on Monday, May 14th between 9 and 10:30 AM in the clubhouse lobby. Galloway Township Police Chief Donna Higbee and some of our police officers will take a break with us in a get acquainted social /informational gathering over a cup of coffee and light refreshments. May 14th was selected to help kickoff National Police Week (May 13th through the 19th ). Come join us and meet the police, who are working for you every day.

BOT Workshop MeetingsBy Lorraine Gicas

The following are the highlights of the workshop meetings of the Board of Trustees.

Tuesday, April 3, 2018Twenty-seven residents attended the April meeting that was opened by Frank Miller with a preface detailing BOT changes that initiated on March 31. Frank Murray, the Condo representative on the Board, has moved into a single family home in the community. Our attorney was consulted for guidance in the matter. The BOT will solicit the Condo Association for a candidate to replace him with a right of first refusal by the Board. If no applicants, then the entire community would be solicited. Interviews would follow. The Condo seat expires in September 2018, six months remaining.

Secondly, Jim Cavallo resigned as a member of the Board of Trustees. Again the BOT will solicit the community for applicants, which could include Frank Murray. This seat on the board expires September of 2019, 18 months remaining. The BOT will reorganize, determine officers, when a new Board is seated. A letter will go out to all residents shortly.

Frank Miller presided over the meeting as acting president, having been VP. The Board can continue to conduct business with three members, a quorum, and having signature cards.

Voting Items:1. Approval was given to a resolution detailingnuisance policy. The clause in the governing documents is vague and “has no teeth.” Each inappropriate act will be fined $50 per offence.

2. The BOT approved the cost of having an additional two lifeguards as required by a new NJ law at the outdoor pool at a cost of $17,000.

3. Three new committee members were approved: Ann Wallace, Finance Laura Sparks, L & G Charles Messina, ACC

4. Approval was given for a four foot fence to protect the sizable investment in the pickleball court. The vender: Reyes, the cost: $8,100, plus tax, to be taken from working capital.

Non-Voting Items:1. The outdoor pool cover Request for

Proposal (RFP) was sent to AMP.

2. Delinquencies & Payment Plan Guidance is still being discussed with our attorney regarding details.

3. Outdoor Pool Heating RFP is beingdeveloped by AMP. The BOT present are inclined to do so; have the reserves for it.

4. The board’s response to the motocrossdeveloper is a definite NO! - that it is not in the best interest of our community. This has been conveyed to Mayor Coppola.

5. The BOT met with Mayor Coppola aboutthe inadequacy of township snow plowing. Three roads categories exist: emergency, primary (including Chatham, Pembrooke, & Quail Hill) and tertiary (the rest of our community is in this category). It was requested that our roads be moved up to the top of the tertiary list.

6. There is a coffee machine survey of usage atthe front desk.

Voting Items:1. New committee members approved:

2. The resolution dealing with delinquencies and payment plans was approved. Frank thanked Jim English and the Finance Committee for their valuable input. Ninety-six percent of residents pay on time. The adjustments include: A) If dues are not paid for three months, then a lien will be put on the house and clubhouse privileges suspended.B) Although the Association has empathy for folks in tough situations, if the BOT approves a payment plan, the homeowner has to agree to pay 1/12 of the amount each month, thus paying off the amount in one year. If the homeowner defaults, then a lien is placed and could go to foreclosure. A copy of the resolution will be mailed to each homeowner.

3. The maintenance proposal for the fitness equipment was approved at $4,120, which is a budgeted expense.

4. The insurance renewal with Farmers Insurance was approved, full coverage umbrella policies, at $40,400. This is also a budgeted expense.

5. After much discussion and explanation, the coffee machine was approved by a 2 to 1 vote. The brewing machine is provided by the vender while the vending portion with K-cups of Green Mountain coffee is at our cost of $3,000.

6. A Project Initiation Form (PIF) for beautification of the area around the flagpole at the clubhouse entrance will be forwarded to L& G and ACC for consideration.

Non-voting Items:1. Finance Chair Jim English gave a three month status report. Briefly, we are in good shape: with cash accounts in several banks and funds, within or below budget except snow removal expense which $34,000 over budgeted amount. Five units that went through sheriff’s sales had to be written off at $85,000 against our reserves.

2. No applications have as yet been received for the Board vacancies.

3. Annual spring inspections by L& G and ACC committee members may happen in May or June. There is an issue with lack of volunteers available to perform these tasks. Both John Bianchini and Tony Annacone are to prioritize violation lists.

AMP Committee By Mike Coster, Chairman

Mini-Golf Putting Green – Pat CreeganJim Dickson started installing the mini-golf putting green on April 5th. The new mini-golf putting green will consist of nine (9) holes. The course should be challenging due to the undulations, contours and other obstacles in its design. Two unhealthy pine trees had to be eliminated because of dripping sap and falling needles. The installation of the putting green was completed on April 18th.

Clubhouse Telephone System and Wi-Fi Upgrade – Pat Creegan & Mike CosterThe new telephone system has been installed, equipment relocated to a secure locked room and the Wi-Fi dead zones have been corrected. The remaining activity is to install the clubhouse paging System.

Consolidated Committee Holiday Party – Barbara HannA few years ago, a committee member organized a consolidated committee holiday party at Seaview. The purpose of this initiative was to allow committee members serving on multiple committees to attend the event along with the members of their other committees. It was a big success. Barbara has sent out an inquiry to all the committee chairs asking them if their committee would be interested in doing this again. She is still waiting on some committee chair responses. If you serve on a committee, let your chairperson know what you think about the consolidated holiday party.

Pickleball Court 4-foot Fence – Bob GottardiThe Board of Trustees has approved the Reyes Fence Co. bid of $8,570. The original November 2017 proposal was for $7,580, but the addition of another 36-inch gate ($555) and the 2018 price increase of the fence ($435) resulted in the increase. The fence is like the outdoor pool fence and will be installed up against the extended brick-paver barrier and will have two 36-inch gates at each end.

Clubhouse Coffee Brewing Machine – Mike CosterWe have been working with DS Services, which is affiliated with the Green Mountain Coffee Co. and is a certified Keurig distributor of commercial brewing machines. Their offer includes a Keurig Commercial Coffee Brewing Machine (K3000) with direct water line plumbing at NO COST to the HOA, providing the HOA purchases the Green Mountain Coffee K-cups and supplies (sweetener, creamer and coffee cups) from them. To secure the K-cups, the HOA would purchase a Micro Vend K-cup vending machine ($2,610), which has a capacity of 168 K-cups. The capacity of the vending machine would allow us to offer a variety of Green Mountain Coffee blends, tea and hot chocolate. But, the Board of Trustees is concerned that if we did not purchase enough coffee that meet the expectations of DS Services then they might walk away from their offer. So, The AMP Committee created a survey and left it at the Clubhouse Concierge Desk for two weeks. The objective of the survey was to ask residents that use the Clubhouse if they would purchase a cup of coffee from the Keurig Coffee Brewing Machine (“yes” or “no”). If they responded “yes”, then we asked them to select from the various Green Mountain Coffee blends which one(s) they would purchase (Breakfast, Regular, Dark Bold, Decaf, Colombian, French and others). The results are in: 102 residents responded to the survey with 84 selected “Yes” and 18 selected “No”. The Board of Trustees approved the coffee machine & service on Tuesday, April 17th. The HOA requires a contract from all our vendors. Our HOA attorney is preparing a contract which will be sent to them. After the contract is signed by vendor, then the commercial coffee brewing and Micro Vend machine will be ordered.

Electronic Bulletin Board – Kathy SchultzThe electronic bulletin board was installed on the wall over the information center in the clubhouse lobby. The bulletin board TV was attached to a rack and mounted, then the TV was tilted to reduce the glare from the sunlight and overhead ceiling lights. It was noticed that the TV would vibrate when the lobby doors would close which was a concern of



the contractor, so the TV was repositioned to lay flat against the wall. At our monthly meeting, the committee discussed the problem and asked Ron Telli (Maintenance Committee Chair) to look at the door closer and asked if the closer could be adjusted to slowly close the door. In addition, we asked Kathy to contact the installer and ask if a heavier lockable constructed rack would eliminate the problem. We are waiting on their results.

Heating the Outdoor Pool – Ed AdamsA request for proposal (RFP) has been created and will be sent to at least three engineering companies for bids. We are asking the engineering company to oversee the project and to request outside companies to bid on the natural gas heaters with installation, electrical work and concrete work. South Jersey gas will run a dedicated gas line from Yarmouth Court to our planned site for the natural gas heaters at NO COST to the HOA. The RFP was approved by the Board of Trustees and will be mailed to engineering companies on April 23rd.

Outdoor Pool Cover – Nick RussoThe AMP Committee received a Project Initiation Form (PIF) from the Pool committee to replace the deteriorated old pool cover. There was a long debate on whether a pool cover was necessary, but it was decided by the Board of Trustees to get a replacement. The HOA Capital Reserve will fund the replacement of the pool cover.

April saw two successful programs: Movie Night featuring the classic thriller “Psycho” and another TED talk “Why You Think You’re Right Even Though You are Wrong.” Many thanks to Alan Levin, Denise O’Meara and Elizabeth Egan for presenting these programs.

As we turn to May two more original programs will be on the calendar: “Enjoying Classical Music” coordinated by Howard Schapker on the 2nd and “Clamming” presented by Kirk Conover on the 9th.

As you read this, the outdoor recreation season is just about getting into full swing. In the April issue, I outlined the season opening date for each outdoor activity along with the

contact information, and this info was also in the April issue of the SCOOP. Here’s some news on the indoor activities.

Wii BowlingAs the outdoor season gets going, the very popular Wii Bowling just completed its ninth year in April. Over 80 people competed, and once again, it was a hugely successful season. Phil and Kathy Schultz captured the Wii Bowling Championship, dethroning John and Tina Vitello, who had won the championship for the last four years in a row. It was a very close match until the last game when Phil and Kathy bowled a perfect 300 game! Wow!!

As always, kudos to Linda Telli for another really enjoyable season. See a separate article on this elsewhere in this issue.

More Indoor Activities Although some indoor activities are on hiatus for the summer, Billiards continues to be extremely popular all year round, and Darts continues to be played every week. The Card rooms also continue to be quite active, so there’s plenty to do, either indoors or outdoors. Take advantage and enjoy our many recreational opportunities.

The Committee is continuing to develop a plan of standard operating procedures that will serve as guide for management staff at the clubhouse as to their responsibilities in the event of

an emergency. Our efforts at this time are to fully explore the roles and responsibilities of key personnel assigned to the Clubhouse at this time. The main objective, of course, is to forge a plan that will maximize the safety and security of Clubhouse occupants in the event of an emergency. Leadership, responsibility, communication and direction will be the key points of the plan when completed.

The Clubhouse phone/PA system installation is progressing but very slowly. The project completion is anticipated to be at the end of 2018. The crosswalk requests at Devonshire Village have been forwarded by the Mayor to the Galloway engineering department. A request to form a Neighborhood Watch program has

been discussed recently and in the past with no forward movement. The Watch does not meet the need for such a direction and the amount of volunteers it would take. The BOT have decided not to pursue this initiative to avoid putting people in difficult positions. Call the police regarding anything suspicious.

Police officer Kevin Jorgensen reported a suspicious male was seen on Dover Court where he looked in the back door of a home. The resident called the police and provided the license number of the suspect’s vehicle. The license plate was registered to a person in Pleasantville. Pleasantville PD could not locate the owner. No further action at this time. Officer Jorgensen also reported that the majority of calls from Four Seasons were medical and false security alarms. Particular attention is being focused on Quail Hill Blvd checking for speeders. In addition he reported that suspicious persons were reported in Wexford and Devonshire Villages. Watch your speed and report any suspicious activity or persons.

Once again Kevin emphasized the need to be cautious about the ever increasing number of telephone scams that attempt to get people to send money for false reasons. Keep an outside light on, lock your car always, close garage door when home and at night, report solicitors to police right away and in closing he invited us all to come to the “COFFEE WITH COPS” event on May 14th from 9 until 10:30 AM.

The Key holder program has been very useful and positive for several years now. Our Police Department has the info should they have some emergent need to enter a home safely and without any home damage. New signups can be done at our front desk with Lorraine. If you are a present key holder member you might need to update your info. If you moved into a home that has the “key” decal on the mailbox post you need to register your info and replace the former resident info. Do this at the front office with Lorraine. If you have a need to replace your decal (snow storm damage) leave a note with Lorraine for S & S or contact a committee member.

Book Club Notes By Janet Reilly

On April 23, the book club met to discuss the book “Prince Charles” by Sarah “Sally” Bedell Smith, an American historian and

author. Her specialties are biographies of American political, cultural, and business leaders, as well as members of the British Royal Family. She received her BA from Wheaton College and a MS from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

William Boyd, a book critic for The New York Times wrote, “What’s remarkable about [Smith’s] portrait of Prince Charles is that he emerges as a man not deeply tainted by the complacent values of the world in which he was raised. Her Charles is a complex, somewhat troubled, sincere and questioning individual...Smith makes many telling, shrewd points in pursuit of realigning the popular image of Prince Charles.” The book has been on the bestseller lists of The Washington Post, The New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly, and The Wall Street Journal.

Ms. Smith turns to the British royal family to give us a new look at Prince Charles, the oldest heir to the throne in more than three hundred years. The book produces powerful feelings, and strong clear images. It’s an eye-opening biography which took four years of research and hundreds of interviews with palace officials, former girlfriends, spiritual gurus, and more, some speaking on the record for the first time. This is considered to be the first authoritative work about Charles’s life that sheds light on the death of Diana, his marriage to Camilla, and his preparations to take the throne one day.

Prince Charles begins with his lonely childhood, in which he struggled to live up to his father’s expectations and sought companionship from the Queen Mother and his great-uncle Lord Mountbatten. It follows him through difficult years at school, his early love affairs, his intellectual

quests, his entrepreneurial pursuits, and his intense search for spiritual meaning. It tells of the tragedy of his marriage to Diana; his eventual reunion with his true love, Camilla; and his relationships with William, Kate, Harry, and his grandchildren.

I started reading this book thinking I would thoroughly dislike Prince Charles - even more than when I started. However, the book paints a picture of a human being who is more complicated, tragic, and compelling than we knew - until now. I truly enjoyed this book, as did most of the members of the club.

Our next book club choice is called STIFF, by Mary Roach. Please read it and join us on Tuesday, May 29, at 10:00 am in the All-Purpose Room in the Clubhouse. Even if you don’t read it, come see what we’re all about. NOTE: Our meetings usually take place on Mondays, but for May only, it will be held on Tuesday.

Did not watch the Academy Awards. Stopped watching when they gave out those $2,000 gift packages to all the nominees during the time of weather related tragedies etc. I also could not tolerate those long acceptance speeches. Judy and I saw most of the nominated movies. The winner for best picture, The Shape of Water, was marvelous. The director Guillermo del Toro must have seen The Creature from the Black Lagoon when he was younger. Although not the same….the theme of creature-loving the lady was evident. The creature’s relationship with Sally Hawkins was beautiful. She is one of the few actresses who won best actress as a deaf mute. That list does include Jane Wyman and Marlene Matlin along with others.

I am a big fan of googling You Tube movies. You can type in scenes, names of stars, movie titles etc. and up appears enough information to spend an evening. I try to get full movies. One did come up and I was surprised. It is one of my favorite westerns….One-Eyed Jacks starring Marlon Brando. The setting of Monterey, California and the acting of Brando, Carl Malden and Ben Johnson is worth the two hour investment of time. I always type in certain scenes of movies. Some of my favorites are Holden and Novak’s dance scene from Picnic, Bonnie and Clyde massacre at the end, Sonny shot on the causeway from Godfather I, the cab scene with Brando and Steiger from On The Waterfront, Bea Richards asking Spencer Tracy why is it men lose their passion when growing older from GWCTD (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), Sal Mineo interviewed by the Jewish underground from Exodus, Steve McQueen’s motor cycle chase from The Great Escape, his shooting of his friend in Sand Pebbles, and the car chase from Bullitt. This list is endless.

My visits to the clubhouse are few…no particular reason. When I did go, I would be stopped by movie lovers…and before I knew it…an hour went by. I miss that. Movies are an expression of us….we talk about movies and we are talking about ourselves. For me I am that little boy running all the way home from Jim Thorpe All-American. William Holden is finding his way from Picnic…we all are. Our lives will become The Last Picture Show sooner or later. The Best Years of Our Lives are ahead of us as it was for Harold Russell, Cathy Downs, Teresa Wright and Dana Andrews. Think about the movies you enjoy and you will see that they are an extension of you.

Now, an admission from me. Over the years my columns have concentrated on the males at the expense of the females. Yes, I talk about Katharine Hepburn and a few more ladies. I don’t know why and I can’t offer an apology because I seem to know more about one sector over the other. I am going to attempt to remedy that situation. This year is the 50th anniversary of the movie classic Vertigo. The star of that movie is Kim Novak. She was not Hitchcock’s first choice. His choice was Vera Miles but she became pregnant. Vera Miles was also Hitchcock’s choice to play Marion Crane in Psycho but Janet Leigh won that part. Novak for me was a true Hollywood star. She left tinsel town early in her career as did Kim Basinger. Jean Simmons starred in Guys and Dolls and later played a similar role in Elmer Gantry. Margot Robbie was terrific as Tonya Harding from I, Tonya and Frances McDormand and Allison Janney played tough ladies and won their respective awards for Three Billboards and I, Tonya

Recently, I went to the funeral of my South Philly friend Perry Rubin. “Rube” belongs in this column because he looked, acted and had all the characteristics of Danny DeVito. He was always funny. He had a news stand, sold cars and worked as a bartender…..all perfect jobs for this diminutive dynamo. I always think of him when I see DeVito running across a parking lot trying to save Jack Nicholson from being murdered from Hoffa. Rube, I dedicate this column to you and some day …down the road…we will have a corners reunion.

Swimming Pool Season is coming! By Betsy Doyle

The outdoor swimming pool opens on Saturday, May 26 at 10 AM. Swimmers will assemble at that time for the Annual Polar Bear Plunge! Come and join the festivities!

Badges are required for entry into the pool area for all residents and guests over the age of 6. If you cannot locate your badges, new ones are available at the front desk – Residents $10 and Guests $3. Extra guest badges may be borrowed at the front desk. (They must be returned.) The Pool Committee is looking for volunteers to help with Sign In on weekends.

The Board and the AMP Committee are working on details for heating the Outdoor Pool. Hours may change if the heat is installed.

Residents are responsible for compliance with all rules. Rules are available on the Community Website or at the front desk.

HOT DOGS FOR CHARITY will begin their 8th season on or around June 30th and will continue every weekend until Labor Day. We will operate on the 4th of July, as always.

The donation to over one dozen charities are in excess of $26,000 over the past 7 years, due to the patronage and generosity of our residents and guests.

With the passing of time, our current volunteers are asking for help with all the duties involved with the operation, Anyone interested in helping the “Boys & Girls of Summer” please contact any of us for more info. Transcending DifferencesBy Lorraine Gicas

The Ventnor Library is an enticing building covering a full ocean-front block with direct access to the boardwalk. The edifice houses many programs for the pleasure and enlightenment of the community. After a walk-through on this particular sunny Saturday afternoon, a mental picture kept recurring to me. It had been no more than a passing glance or two but it stubbornly begged for examination.

Three stationary chess tables are located in the main seating area. At one a wheelchair-accommodated white thirty-something male faced his white male thirty-something counterpart. At another chess board an African-American male in his forties gazed across at a young Asian-American girl of about 12 years flanked by two other youngsters. The middle table found these players: corn-row plaited African American young woman and a silver-haired Caucasian male retiree.

It was striking: none of these differences matters; chess transcended them all. And this is a scheduled Saturday open session pick-up game time.

What else does that in this age of diversity tensions? Babies, beauty, art, music, catastrophe…? When someone stumbles your hand reaches out immediately to help, to support, without ever thinking are we alike, are we different? Our most basic instincts show us at our very best!

Four Seasons Veterans Club By Ed Sperling

The following are highlights from our April 9th meeting

Ed Triggs opened the evening with an invocation and prayer followed by a Flag Salute and Pledge led by Bob Simms. Then Dee Wells introduced our guest, Vincent Jones, Atlantic County Emergency Management Coordinator.

Vincent opened up with a little humor regarding the weather and its inconsistency. He did guarantee however, with the rotation of the Earth, it will get warmer.

In addition to helping ourselves by being prepared in an emergency, he encouraged us all to take the “Register Ready” form, complete it and mail it to the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management. Or go to WWW.registerready.nj.gov to register. It is a special needs registry form designed to help emergency responders locate and safely evacuate people who could find it difficult to help themselves in the event of a major disaster such as a hurricane. The form asks information that could be relevant in an evacuation mode such as any physical impairment you might have or medical equipment you might need that is not easily transportable. All the information that would help first responders attend to the most needy.

After Hurricane Irene they had to completely revamp their evacuation procedures. The plan was to get people out of harms way. They were able to evacuate 13 busloads of people successfully and they headed west. They got up to the turnpike and expected to be able to find shelters but to no avail. People had to stay on the buses for a day and a half while they scrambled enough shelters to house them until they could return home.

Since then they have changed the plan to evacuate people to shelters in Atlantic County only, thereby not being so far from their original home and making return easier. The system was challenged by Sandy but fortunately Atlantic County did not get a direct hit. The storm hit somewhat north of Brigantine.

Unfortunately each storm has its own unique challenges and problems. When does it hit? Is heat the problem? Is cold the problem? Are there power outages the utilities can’t handle? Each household should have an emergency kit prepared in advance including some cash and a plan to evacuate. Keep a list of medications that are needed. Being prepared is the key to survival.

At this time Dee Wells presented Vince with our Eagle trophy as a thank you for sharing his knowledge and time.

Our Operation Shoebox is moving along and Nancy Schweiker was able to get four boxes of goodies to our service people in combat zones in March. We still need donations of things like salt water taffy, cookies, candy, beef jerky, Slim Jims, full size shampoos, and toothpaste. A donation box is kept in the front lobby of the clubhouse.

Our Annual Veterans Club Dinner is scheduled for Monday, June 11 at the Mays Landing Country Club. Tickets may still be purchased for the occasion. Call Lou Cannizzaro at 652-5252 or Dee Wells at 652-1492. This is a culinary delight you just do not want to miss.

In addition our membership has been asked to participate in the Historical Society’s Veterans History Project. This is an Atlantic County Society project which is supporting the Library of Congress in this effort. The schedule for this event is set for May 16th starting at 1PM in the Clubhouse. Please consider sharing your service experiences. For more information call Bob Simms at 404-9318 and let him know of your interest so your interview time can be scheduled.

Please remember, at out next election, nominations and/or volunteers will be accepted to replace the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. This is an annual event and we really need to encourage some of the younger generation or newer members to bring in some new ideas and fresh leadership going forward.

Four Seasons Veterans club meets the second Monday of each month, except December, at 7PM in the clubhouse Ballroom. The club is open to all Four Seasons residents who have ever served as regular or reserve members of the armed forces. Spouses, significant others and non-members are invited to attend our meetings if interested. Please join us.


Morning at the Museum… by Earl Cain

An enthusiastic group of 20+ of the Lovers of the Arts group joined me at the Atlantic County Veterans Museum in Estell Manor. Catherine Trainor organized the visit. After a two minute overview on the sun porch of the museum project, the history of the beautiful old manor home and the general layout, we proceeded to the Revolutionary War section. The mural of the Battle of Chestnut Neck, the only battle of the Revolution fought in Atlantic County, is the centerpiece of the exhibit. Uniforms, muskets, cannon balls, stories from our first Veterans of their actions in the war, are displayed. We continued through the Women in Uniform, Civil War, WWI, WWII, and Korea.

Then to the second floor’s Viet Nam, Global War on Terror, the Naval and Aviator exhibits and our soon-to-be library and research room.

Comments are always welcome, especially complimentary ones: The museum was very well organized and it had a nice flow to the displays. The displays were artistically pleasing, very comprehensive, very encompassing and emotionally moving.

It is always an honor to greet new and old friends at the museum. And as mentioned, it can sometimes be very emotionally moving, knowing that something you see displayed belonged to your family, friend or neighbor.

What a fun time was had by all. We sang. We ate lot’s of delicious food from P.J. McGettigans. There was so much laughter and camaraderie. Tony DeLuca and his band never stopped playing and singing, they really knew how to get the crowd up and dancing. From the first drum beat to the closing song, “New York, New York.” The dance floor was always busy. We had a special treat “watching “Senior Rockets wanna-bees” do their thing.

At one point Tony DeLuca and his band took time out to salute “America”. It was beautiful, everyone stood and joined in the singing.

Although the dance floor was constantly filled, we all took time out to step over to the Photo Booth, have fun and have our pictures taken to take home and have a fond memory of the evening.

This truly was a fun filled night, that goes down as a night to remember.

Our hosts for the evening were: Marlene Flanagan, Rose Uniglicht, and Carl Castoro.

Our raffle winners of $75 each were: Annette Castoro and Ellen Blackford.

Fire Extinguisher Drop OffBy Joanne Annacone

The Safety & Security Committee along with Galloway Township Fire Marshall Ron Garbutt welcomed about 40 residents as they dropped off their old fire extinguishers during the two hour drop- off on April 25th. Some residents were told their extinguishers were still functional.

Fire Marshall Garbutt answered numerous questions from the residents, such as:Where should fire extinguishers be located? -Within 10 feet of kitchen between stove and exit, in your pantry, buy not in the cabinet under your sink.What is the best type of fire extinguishers to buy? -ABC is best for inside the house and 2A 10BC is good for the garage.How often should you replace your detectors? -Every 10 years for smoke detectors and every seven years for carbon monoxide detectors.What is the best location for smoke detectors? -One in each bedroom and one outside the bedroom in the hall.What is the best location for carbon monoxide detectors? -Within 10 feet of the bedrooms.What are the recommended types of detectors? -Hardwire with battery backup – battery type is okay, if house not wired and wireless system type is available.

Residents were reminded “in case of a fire” to call 9-1-1 first. Those who attended thanked the Fire Marshall and the committee for assisting the homeowner of 4 Seasons, since old fire extinguishers are difficult to dispose of.
