Community Service Award Matthew Stopera wasthe2005recipientoftheNCFCommunityServiceAward.Thisisgivenannuallyto recognize a graduating senior, who is a resident ofthe Niskayuna Town or School District and who hasperformed significant community service. Matt was a model of volunteer service whileattendingNiskayunaHighSchool.DuringhighschoolhisactivitiesincludedKeyClub,NationalHonorSocietyandgolfteam,andheservedastheTreasureroftheStudentCouncilandtheDramaClub.HiscommitmenttoSpecial Olympics wasongoingandincluded4yearsofcoachinggolfand3yearsasaSpecial Olympics bowlingcoach.Mattwasnamedoneofthe“13KidsWhoCare”intheCapitalDistrict and received the President’s Volunteer ServiceAward.HeisattendingNewYorkUniversity.

College Promise Scholarship Anton Ushkin was named the beneficiary of theNCFCollegePromiseScholarship.Establishedlastwinterbyagenerousanonymousfamilywithaninterestinhelpingstudentsattaintheirgoalofattendingcollege,the2005scholarshipisfor$1000peryearforuptofouryears. Duringhishighschoolyears,AntonworkedasacampcounselorattheSchenectadyJewishCommunityCenterandparticipatedinVarsityswimmingandannualSpecial Olympics events. Anton’s positive attitude,persistence and motivation enabled him to embracethe “American Dream” and to grow in his academicchallenges.HebecameawellrespectedandloyalmemberoftheNiskayunaHighSchoolcommunity.AntonisnowattendingSt.John’sUniversity.

SenatorFarleyandtheNiskayunaSchoolBoard.TownSupervisorLukeSmithannouncedthattheweekofNovember14thwasNiskayunaCommunityFoundationWeek.AhighlightofthenightwasthestudentspeakersEthanStrayer,BriannaConleyandAshikDesia.TheyrepresentedtheVanAntwerpDoubleHHoleintheWoodsCampprojectandshowedallofushowhelpingothershaspositivelyimpactedtheirlives.Theeveningwasfestiveandupbeat….bringingacaringcommunitytogethertocelebratetheirsuccess.

2006 grants Funds Announced...The Board of Directors has allocated $20,000for grants and mini-grants in 2006. Tobeeligible,theapplicantorganizationmustqualifyunder Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code as a non-profit organization, operate under the fiscal sponsorship of anorganizationthatdoes,orbesponsoredbyeithertheNiskayunaTownortheNiskayunaSchoolDistrict.NCF places the highest priority on projects that address significant community issues. Grantsmaybeawardedin;healthandhumanservices,artsandculture,communitydevelopment,conservationandhistoricpreservation,andrecreation.Grantsmayalsobemadeforcapitalprojectsincludingequipmentpurchases.

Singlegrantswillrangefrom$1,000to$5,000.Aletter of inquiryisinitiallyrequiredbyMarch1,2006.Itshouldnotexceedtwopages,andshouldinclude:introductiontoorganization’smission,recentachievements,problemsoropportunitiestobeaddressed, specifics about the grant, and total costs. Eligible organizations will be invited to submit a final applicationinApril.Mini-grantsupto$1000maybeappliedforthroughouttheyear.Toreceiveinformation,pleasecontactGrantDistributionCo-ChairmenDavePutz(785-0764)orBobSowinski(464-1100Ext.310).

■ Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks - $3,800 -forcomputersandvideoequipmentforhistoricpreservation.■ Bellevue Hospital - $897 -toassistwith9-weekeducationalprogram.■ Birchwood PTO - $1,030-topurchaseandinstallAdaptiveSwingSetforhandicappedchildren.■ High School PTO - $2,100-fordisplaycasetorecognizeandencourageacademicachievements.■ JCC - $3,000 -forearlychildhoodplaygroundfacilitatingoutdooractivityandexerciseforincreasingnumbersofyoungdaycareandafterschoolchildren.■ Niskayuna Day Care - $2,000-forequipmentandtoassistwithongoingneedsforexpansionandimprovementofneededfacility.■ Niskayuna Drama Club - $1,000 –towardthepurchaseofalightsystemattheLittleTheater.■ Niskayuna English Dept - $1,500-tosupport“writer-in-residency”program.■ Niskayuna Lacrosse Club Inc. - $3,000-toassistwithsafeequipmentneedsforexpandingcommunitybasedprogram.■ Town of Niskayuna Recreation Department - $1,000 -forhandicappedequipmentforTownpool.

TheFoundingMembersanticipatethatthroughouttheyearsotherswilljoinwiththemtoensurethattheNiskayunaCommunityFoundationwillcontinueonapathofprogressandgrowthforthebettermentofNiskayuna,positivelyimpactingallSchenectadyCountyandtheCapitalRegion.Throughtheirmutualbenevolenceandleadership,Niskayunawillremainathrivingandforward-movingcommunity,buildingbridgesforourfamiliesandneighborsforperpetuity.

The2005recipientsofthesecondannualMurray Award for Excellence in EducationwerepresentedinMaytoMarkTreanor,aspecialeducationteacher,andPaulaBrinkman,musicdepartmentchoirandvocalgroupdirector,insurpriseannouncementsintheirclassrooms.Acrowdofstudents,parentsandteachersstunnedMr.TreanorandMs.Brinkman,astheywereinthemiddleofteachingtheirclasses,bywalkinginwithplaquesandballoons,reportersandatelevisioncamera.Eachrecipientwillreceive$2500foruseinaprofessionaldevelopmentactivityoftheirchoosing.Indevelopingtheaward,theMurraydaughtersrecognizedtheirparents’highschoolfocusbutalsohopeditwouldinitiateotherawardsthatrecognizedexcellenteducatorsintheK-8gradelevelsaswell.

Basedonthewishesofthedonors,theawardrecognizesthebeliefofEdwardsB.andSallyMurray,andtheirdaughtersJeanneMurrayVeaseyandKathyMurrayCrowe,thatoutstandingeducatorswhocontinuetolearnareessentialtofosteringstudentgrowth,improvingschoolsandenhancingtheeducationofstudents.The$5000inawardmoneyhasbeenprovidedforbyafundheldatNCFandcontributedbytheMurraydaughters.Althoughestablishedbythedaughtersinmemoryoftheirparentslastyear,thisyearitwasalsogiveninmemoryofJeanneMurrayVeaseywhosadlypassedawayinMarch.EducationwasalifetimepassionforJeanneandshealwaysvaluedherschoolyearsinNiskayunaandgaveparticularemphasistothequalityofteachingsheexperiencedinthehighschool.ThroughherdevelopmentofthisrecognitionawardJeannewasalsoavisionaryleaderassherecognizedthediversepotentialopportunitiesthatNCFoffersNiskayuna.

Aselectioncommitteeofstudents,parentsandteachersconsideredanumberofcriteriainchoosingtheserecipients.Criteriaincludedoutstandingclassroompracticesandprofessionalcontributions,pastaccomplishmentsaswellasgrowthpotentialandaschoolpresencethatinspiresandpositivelyimpactsstudents,colleaguesandthecommunity. page 7page 7
