Is it April already!?! Hope everyone is well and having fun with the spring weather as it too will most likely fly by!!

From what I have heard, everyone that has had a reason to be in the hospital or outpatient procedure is doing well. Keep on keeping on gang!

The Tulsa Auto Show leadership has decided to go with a decade them… this year they will start with the 50's. Therefore, no Mustangs this year… but we'll get 'em next year for the 60's. Shouldn't stop us from going to the show and enjoying the 50's theme.

The Mid-America Shelby Meet is coming up quickly… we need volunteers ASAP for parking, judging, hydrating and basically working the car show. I'm meeting with Steve and Billy at Pop's April 7th… turning it into another lunch cruise so you're invited to join us. Look for an email the week of the 7th.

Our show plans are coming along well… we've not been this ahead of the game in some time. A potential trophy was presented at the March board meeting and it may be the "winner" over the next several years! We plan to have a final item by the May general meeting.

Don't miss Jerry Bergeron's HST article part 2… it addresses the importance of a safe track and how they implement, among other methods, the use of multi and single colored flags.

Our first order of new apparel should be available at the April meeting. I hope you liked what you saw and ordered something to proudly display your association with a Mustang family.

• As of 3pm online order form is live yet not linked our website; the five colors are not visible yet

• Sizes run true to size on unisex shirts, but on ladies, those run small so order a size up.

• Will try to do large order by 3/21/18, that is the last date available to order to get by April meeting to avoid shipping costs. Afterwards, $5 for shipping directly to your home.

• There is a processing fee, looks to be % of total order, will check to see what that is about.

Green Country Classic Mustangs Board Meeting March 27, 2018 Speedy Gonzales Restaurant

Opening - The Board Meeting was called to order at 6:58 by John Hemby Present - Ten Board Members and two guests Treasurer report - Mary gave report Secretary report - Cary updated board on cling status, they are ready to be paid for and picked up. Cary will do this 03/29/18. VP Report - Troy reported no idea when Gatesway meetings will start, Crystal on vacation this week. Troy reported an offer to have trophies paid for in condition we opened the show to non-Ford vehicles. We agreed we are not prepared to do so. • Trophy Chair Report - Jamie presented a prototype trophy for this year’s show to board meet-

ing. Looks really good. All metal, laser cut, powder coated. Will place dash plaque on it (that would be removable) stating what trophy is for. Should be about $13.00 per trophy (possibly cheaper, depending on quantity ordered). The craftsman needs a three week notice. Jamie will ask how much if powdered coated with all three red, white and blue colors. Requesting quote for smaller version too. We should have more info by May Board meeting to make final deci-sions. We need to determine the number of trophies needed. Ken suggested instead of painting trophies, that dash plaques be red, white and blue. We will have dash plaques for our goody bags. The trophies will be different stating "Best of top 3 in class" Jamie in be in charge of the ballots for special trophies... police, fire, mayor, and best of show.

• Sponsor Chair Report - Steve Young says we should be receiving a check from O'Reilly Auto

Parts for show sponsorship. Troy is talking with John Lane of Matthew Ford about having a Bul-litt & Raptor to display at the show. Troy will talk to DJ from last year at Tuesday cruise about doing show again this year.

President Report - John shared how important it is to have the Toy Corral involved throughout the process. Will send another request for information asked for. May discuss disbanding the Toy Corral if participation expectations are not met. John is asking for more input for newsletter. If you have anything please email John. Current Business • Apparel Shop - Ron Magnusson reports the ordered items at the April meeting next week.

John told Ron if we were truly required to order hats in sets of a dozen… to go ahead and order the balance needed. Members can purchase the inventory from us. We may buy a dozen a month to maintain an inventory.

• MCA News - Ron Watkins reminded us of changes to modified and daily driver classes. Ken pointed out they are highlighted yellow per the MCA website. MCA is trying to make it more consistent with more points.

• REMINDER - if you are going to the Nebraska show. Make sure your fire extin-

guisher is in your trunk or you will not be allowed to participate. • REMINDER - Start brining in the door prizes for our September show.

• 18-19 Calendars - we will be sticking with the 16 month calendars for now, we still have a

lot of folks that have yet to be featured in the club calendar. John will make ballots to draw at next month’s general meeting. We will solicit for calendar sponsors. Plan to have them ready in August, but will have them for sure by the September show.

• Show 'n Shine letters - John talked to Dave Jenson, he has them ready, and he will mail

out as many as he can and we will reimburse him for postage, envelopes and mailing fees. • Mid-America Shelby Meet - John reported the leadership hasn't had their second meet-

ing yet. Will request adding show information to their site as we have on ours regarding who, what, where and why. Ron Watkins suggested placing the same documents in their registration packet.

New Business • Storage Unit - John plans to go to the unit after Tech session April 14 to do an inventory...

to see what we need to keep and what we need to discard. The inventory will include tak-ing pictures. Just in Case!We resurrected the idea of getting a trailer and doing away with storage unit all together. We have a few folks in the club that would be willing to store the trailer on their property and would be able to bring it out to shows and such as needed. We may ask for sponsorship of a custom paint job with our logo. Ken Calvert has done some research and finds used 10x14 trailers going for $1500-$2500 while the new are $3000-$5000. Will put to vote to purchase.

• Pops Cruise - John is going to meet with Steve Armstrong and Billy Henson at Pops in Ar-

cadia April 7 to review judging plans and processes. He will submit an invitation email for anyone to join us for the cruise and lunch.

How Safe is it to Track my Car?

How safe is it to track my car? Let’s put it into perspec�ve. How safe is it for me to drive on highway 169 from Owasso to

Tulsa. My choice is Halle* Motor Racing Circuit (HMRC) is safer. Why would I say that? On public highways there are far

more cars than police. Although there are driving laws about the only one truly enforced is speeding. Does the guy next to

you have a license? Does he have any driving skills? Is his car mechanically sound? Are drivers required to a*end driver’s

training? Does the driver next to you have the most important safety feature “A Brain”?

So why would I think driving in a High Speed Touring (HST) event is safer? HST limits the number of cars on track. All cars

travel the same direc�on. We have corner workers sta�oned about every ¼ mile around the track to enforce the rules. All

drivers must check in with the required paper work including a car technical sheet. DE (Driver Ed) students are encouraged

to arrive early for the track tour. A=er check in, all drivers must a*end the driver’s mee�ng to get a s�cker to go on track.

Novice drivers (DE) are required to a*end driver’s educa�on classes. Instructors are provided for novice (DE) drivers. Driv-

ers are split into two skill levels Novice/Intermediate and Advanced groups. We can’t verify you or the driver next to you

has a “Brain” un�l we watch you drive. There is a flat tow truck, fire truck and an ambulance on site in case of emergen-

cies. Response �me is quick! Is that all we have to make it a safe event? Nope!

On public highways we have some digital road signs, radio sta�ons and GPS’s that warn us of traffic issues. A lot of �mes

they warn us too late and we get stuck in a bad situa�on. At the track we have “Race Control” and “Flags” to communi-

cate traffic condi�ons. Race control communicates with all track personnel by radio. Corner workers communicate with

drivers by displaying flags. So about every ¼ mile you have eyes looking out for you. What do corner workers look for?

Bad drivers, change in track surface such as dirt, oil and car parts. Weird sounds in you car you may not hear. Fire or

smoke from your car you might not see. So why is it important to a*end the drivers mee�ng and review the flags? You get

my point?

If flags are used to communicate “Road Condi(ons” to the driver, how do I know what they mean? A*end the drivers

mee�ng and get a flag sheet. Here’s a brief review of our flag discussion at a driver’s mee�ng. The Green Flag means the

track is clear. A Yellow Flag indicates cau�on another car has had an issue; you need to slow down un�l you pass the inci-

dent area. There is no passing allowed under a yellow flag. A Yellow Flag with Red Stripes tells you the track surface has

changed; slow down to see what has changed. A slow moving vehicle on the track is signified by a White Flag. Slow down,

pass safely. If a corner worker spots something wrong with your car they will display a Black Flag with an Orange Ball in

the middle. Go to the pits you may have a mechanical issue that needs to be checked out. If you see a Blue Flag with a

White Stripe, there is a faster car catching you, make sure to stay on line and point them by in the next passing zone. The

Red Flag indicates something serious has occurred and a driver needs an immediate response from one or all of the rescue

vehicles. Our responsibility as a driver is to come to a complete stop as quickly and as safely as we can. Once all drivers

come to a complete stop the emergency response team can be released. A Checkered Flag means our session is over, take

one cool down lap and go back to the pits. Did I forget a flag? No, it gets its own paragraph.

So how do we pull drivers off the track who break the rules or display aggressive and dangerous behavior? “The Dreaded

Black Flag” is a signal to the driver that he/she has broken the rules and must report to the penalty box on the hot grid.

We have a three strike rule. The first offense the grid marshal discusses your offense and may send you back on track. A

second offense in the same session will be another discussion with the grid marshal but you will be sent to pits for the rest

of the session to meditate about your driving skills. If by chance you get a Third Black Flag, you and I will have a long talk

about your driving issues to ponder your future as an HST driver and may be sent home without a refund. You may be my

best friend, but like a good parent, rules must be enforced to protect both you and the other drivers. We have only had 3

drivers over the past 6 years who would not or could not correct bad habits and took that long trip home.

There is no doubt the risks are high any(me you drive at high speeds on a road course and with other cars on track. Re-

member in the first part of this series I stated the most important safety feature is your “Brain”! Use it. Show up in a me-

chanically sound car with brakes prepared for track use. Take the track tour. A*end the driver’s educa�on classes, listen

to your instructor. Do not drive beyond your ability. Study the flags and know what they mean. Keep the corner sta�ons

in your peripheral vision. Watch out for other drivers, especially other beginners. Use your greatest asset “YOUR BRAIN”!
