OCTOBER - Month of the Rosary

Excerpts from: APOSTOLIC LETTER

ROSARIUM VIRGINIS MARIAE

OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF JOHN PAUL II

TO THE BISHOPS, CLERGY AND FAITHFUL

ON THE MOST HOLY ROSARY October 16, 2002

“Mary's contemplation is above all a remembering. We need to under-stand this word in the biblical sense of remembrance (zakar) as a making

present of the works brought about by God in the history of salvation. The Bible is an account of saving events cul-minating in Christ himself. These events not only belong to “yesterday”; they are also part of the “today” of sal-vation. This making present comes about above all in the Liturgy: what God accomplished centuries ago did not only affect the direct witnesses of those events; it con-tinues to affect people in every age with its gift of grace. To some extent this is also true of every other devout approach to those events: to “remember” them in a spir-it of faith and love is to be open to the grace which Christ won for us by the mysteries of his life, death and resurrection.

Consequently, while it must be reaffirmed with the Sec-ond Vatican Council that the Liturgy, as the exercise of the priestly office of Christ and an act of public worship, is “the summit to which the activity of the Church is di-rected and the font from which all its power flows”,(15) it is also necessary to recall that the spiritual life “is not limited solely to participation in the liturgy. Christians, while they are called to prayer in common, must also go to their own rooms to pray to their Father in secret (cf. Mt 6:6); indeed, according to the teaching of the Apostle, they must pray without ceasing (cf.1Thes 5:17)”.(16) The Rosary, in its own particular way, is part of this varied panorama of “ceaseless” prayer. If the Liturgy, as the activity of Christ and the Church, is a saving action par excellence, the Rosary too, as a “meditation” with Mary on Christ, is a salutary contemplation. By immersing us in the mysteries of the Redeemer's life, it ensures that what he has done and what the liturgy makes present is profoundly assimilated and shapes our existence.

Christ is the supreme Teacher, the revealer and the one revealed. It is not just a question of learning what he taught but of “learning him”. In this regard could we have any better teacher than Mary? From the divine standpoint, the Spirit is the interior teacher who leads us to the full truth of Christ (cf. Jn 14:26; 15:26; 16:13). But among creatures no one knows Christ better than Mary; no one can introduce us to a profound knowledge of his mystery better than his Mother.

Contemplating the scenes of the Rosary in union with Mary is a means of learning from her to “read” Christ, to discover his secrets and to understand his message.

This school of Mary is all the more effective if we consid-er that she teaches by obtaining for us in abundance the gifts of the Holy Spirit, even as she offers us the incom-parable example of her own “pilgrimage of faith”.”

LACTATION OF ST. BERNARD

Born at the end of the 11th century, St. Bernard of Clairvaux was a key reformer of the Cistercian order in the 12th century. In addition to his holiness, he was a gifted preacher and brilliant theologian. He was can-onized just 21 years after his death and in 1830 was the 16th person to ever be officially honored with the prestigious title of ‘Doctor of the Church.’

But where did he get his great wisdom? St. Bernard was kneeling and praying when suddenly the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Him holding the infant Je-sus. Mary squeezed one of her breasts, squirting breast milk to him. In one version of the story, the milk went to his mouth and symbolized both that she would be a special mother to him and that she was supernaturally granting him wisdom.

In another version, the milk went to his eyes and cured an infection he had. But even this second story could be interpreted as having the same meaning as the first: the infection could symbolize sin or igno-rance and curing it could symbolize her granting him the illumination of wisdom. Thus, this explains how he achieved such incredible learning and wisdom.

MARY’S BIBLICAL TITLE: EXTERMINATRIX OF HERESY

In this image note how the Blessed Mother is beating down a demon with a club and protecting a little one from his poisonous lies. This imagery derives from the book of Revelation:

The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood.

But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river which the dragon had poured from his mouth.

Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea (Rev 12:15-17).

Here the Serpent [i.e Satan] spews out water from his mouth in order to overcome the blessed Virgin Mary. His lies are described as a “flood.” This is the tactic that the Devil tried with Eve. He spewed forth lies and he vanquished the first woman.

He tried the same strategy with the Blessed Mother of Christ but was not successful – she was perfectly graced by Christ. Angry, he then turns his attention to “the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus.”

We are those who try to “keep the commands of God and bear testimony to Jesus Christ.” Satan is trying to damn us through the lies he spews from his mouth. Once baptized, he tries to catch us through heresy. Yet, Mary’s maternal protection stays with us. Conse-quently, she is called the Exterminatrix of Here-sy because she stands in enmity against Satan as we read in the Book of Genesis 3:15.

If you’ve ever seen a mama bear protect her cubs, you know how ferociously our Immaculate Mother fights for us! She’s got a club in her hands and she is fighting for us…

“O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”

by Dr Taylor Marshall

Our Lady, Destroyer of Heresies, Pray for Us!

In this time of great suffering and trial in the Church, we turn to Our Lady asking for her unfailing intercession. Under her care, we pray that each member of the Church be strengthened in courage and faith, and find healing and hope in her Immaculate Heart.

COLUMBUS DAY

On Monday, October 14, Holy Innocents will have its regular schedule of Masses, Confessions & Devotions.

MOTHER MARY ANGELICA ON THE LATIN MASS

“Latin was the perfect language for the Mass. It’s the language of the Church, which allows us to pray a ver-bal prayer without distraction.

See, the purpose of the Mass is to pray and to be asso-ciated with the crucifixion and with that glorious ban-quet that we partake of in Holy Communion. He is there. But so much is spoiled in the vernacular.

During the Latin Mass you had the missal if you wanted to follow it in English. It was almost mystical. It gave you an awareness of heaven, of the awesome humility of God who manifests Himself in the guise of bread and wine. The love that He had for us, His desire to remain with us is simply awesome. You could concen-trate on that love, because you weren’t distracted by your own language.

You could go anywhere in the world and you always knew what was going on. It was contemplative be-cause as the Mass was going on you could close your eyes and visualize what really happened. You could feel it. You could look to the east and realize that God had come and was really present. The way it is today with the priest facing the people, its some-thing between the people and the priest. Too often it’s just some kind of get-together and Jesus is all but forgotten.”

INSPIRATION FROM BLESSED MIRIAM TERESA

“Never be in a hurry where spiritual things are concerned … God is never in a hurry. He works only in peace and quiet. We cannot perfect ourselves—God’s grace un-derstood—overnight; we have the whole day of life to achieve this end. Precipitation has been the ruin of many a possible saint.

--From Greater Perfection, p. 137)

ALL SOULS’ DAY MASS REMEMBRANCE

All Souls’ Day envelopes have been included in your envelope packet and are placed throughout the church for you to list the names of your deceased loved ones you wish to remember in the Holy Sacri-fice of the Mass on November 2. Please return the envelope via the collection basket, parish office, or place them in any of the boxes in the church by No-vember 1 so they can be placed on the altar.

40 HOURS EUCHARISTIC DEVOTION

Sign-up sheets for the annual parish Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotion will take place on October 25-27 are located on the bulletin board in the vesti-bule. Volunteers are needed to cover all the hours of adoration, especially the night/early morning hours. Please commit to a specific time of adora-tion by signing the sign-up sheet today.

CELL PHONES—A DISTRACTION AT MASS

We ask that cell phones be turned off before you enter the Church for Mass. Cell phones have become a con-stant distraction during Mass. Phones are ringing during the Proclamation of the Word, during the homily and even during Consecration. If you feel you have to use your cell phone, please exit the Church quietly. Your cooperation is appreciated.

The Holy Innocents Legion of Mary group meets each Monday in the Parish Hall follow-ing the 6 p. m. Mass. For more information on joining this ministry as an active or auxiliary member please contact James Hackett at: [email protected].

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
