There are some great, new additions lurking nearby! Fall 2012 will bring the opening of the College of Business Administration complex. Within this modern area, there will be our new-est addition to the campus dining ven-ues— Einstein Bros Bagels.

Don’t let the name fool you—Einstein Bros Bagels offers much more than the traditional bagel and cream cheese. From innovative salads to hearty soups and creative sandwiches, there are a number of delicious options to choose from. Other high-quality selections on the menu include gourmet cof-fee and specialty coffee drinks, baked goods, and made-to-or-der bagel sandwiches and des-serts.

“The addition of Einstein Bros Bagels meets several needs for the campus community; it of-fers quick, freshly baked bagels and pastries to the north side of campus along University Drive, across University Drive from the Resident halls, and creates a unique destination for students and staff to eat, meet, study, and s o -cialize,” says Brett Roth, Foundation Dining Services Director.

The grand opening of Einstein Bros Bagels is not too far away! Staff and students can already begin looking forward to grabbing a coffee, buy-ing a fresh bagel, and socializing (or studying) in the newly constructed College of Business Administration building.

First, she has been selected to sit on the American Red Cross Blood Services Southern California Region Board of Directors. As a member of the board, Sandy will work with her fellow board members in supporting the mission of the American Red Cross as it relates specifi cally to blood donation and ad-vocacy. While working as an advocate of the Red Cross and all of its missions, she will help develop diversity in its donor population and expand its outreach to the community.

Second, Sandy was recently sworn in as a new member of the City of Pomona Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Sandy will represent the campus of Cal Poly Pomona as well as the Foundation in her role on this board. Congratulations, Sandy!

Campus Streets Get a Facelift The City of Pomona is well into their summer asphalt replacement project on South Campus Drive. In ad-dition to repairing the street to new condition, they have added a bus turn out just past the intersection of South Campus Drive and Temple Avenue; this will help with traffi c fl ow coming to campus from Tem-ple. Furthermore, the City will be improving the as-phalt paving on Temple from University Drive to Valley Blvd., and on Valley Blvd. from Temple to the city line.

These long awaited projects are scheduled to be completed by the fi rst week of October. Patience and perseverance are advised as you travel the streets around campus this summer as these improvements are underway.

California State Polytechnic University Welcomes Back Students at 29th Annual Hot Dog Caper

On Tuesday, September 25, 2012, Cal Poly Pomona welcomes the uni-versity community back to campus with a much beloved tradition: the annual Hot Dog Caper. Students, faculty, and staff gather together at this annual event in University Park to enjoy a free lunch of hot dogs, chips, ice cream and Pepsi products. This event also includes music,

games, and fun activities—all promoting Bronco Spirit. This event is made possible through the partnership of Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc., The Pepsi Bottling Group, AT&T, First Class Vending, Associated Students, Inc. and Fa-cilities Planning & Management. This is just one of the many ways that Foundation gives back to the campus. Over the past 45 years, Foundation has given many millions of dol-lars to the university to fund many campus and student pro-grams, scholarships, and infrastructure.

A team of nearly 500, including administrators, staff, and ath-letes outfi tted in Hot Dog Caper logo t-shirts, volunteer their time to distribute over 14,000 hot dogs during the event.

Dining Tidbits Qboda Mexican Grill Opens this Fall!Anticipate a fall fi esta! An explosion of fl avor will be bursting through the doors of the Bron-co Student Center this upcoming season. Qdoba Mexican Grill will soon inhabit the area formerly occupied by Subway Express. Once settled, the Cal Poly community will be able to treat their taste buds to the delectable zest of Qdoba’s appetizing selections. From Mis-sion-style burritos packed with the freshest ingredients to delicious tacos everyone is sure to relish, this menu will be fi lled with fl avorful options.

Qdoba believes that food’s key role is to provide enjoyment. In order to achieve this scrump-tious delight, they often traverse Mexico to seek authentic recipes and ingredients that they can mix into their own unique fl avors. They also make sure the taste of their food is never less than superb. (It took them 47 attempts to perfect their 3-Cheese Queso!) So, expect exceptional quality!

Be sure to stop by the Bronco Student Center when Qdoba Mexican Grill opens this fall; their food will send happiness to your stomach and make your taste buds dance with joy!

Summer Cookin’ at Los OlivosVarious large groups have been visiting Cal Poly throughout the summer. Whether these people have come to the campus for ESL programs or Freshman Orientation, they all even-tually end up at the same location: Los Olivos Commons.

The Los Olivos team has served a signifi cant number of individuals so far this season. They provide meals for approximately 400 incoming freshmen and 240 parents on each fi rst day of the eight Freshman Orientations. The Barbeque Masters, Eric and Cody provide freshly grilled burgers and hot dogs for about 450 outside Campus Center each second day dinner. Additionally, they have provided food for around 525 people involved in ESL programs, 85 college prep students for the Summer Bridge programs, 175 people in the Cal Poly Pomona Upward Bound program, 60 members in the Pasadena City College Upward Bound program, and 235 other visitors in eight to ten additional conference groups.

With a seating capacity of 680 people, Patrick McCoy, General Manager of Residential Dining, and the rest of his team strategically plan ahead to ac-commodate large volumes of guests; Chef Arnold Zavalza ensures that there is an abundant supply of food and Service Manager Eric Duvall controls the traffi c pouring in and out of their doors. As they continue to cycle through numerous groups, they make sure that each Cal Poly guest satisfi es their appetite from one or more of the eight food stations available.

Although hosting several large groups can be diffi cult work, Patrick, Arnold, Eric, and the rest of the Los Olivos crew have successfully served each visitor this summer and continue to happily do so.

OUR TOP 10 FAVORITE APPS OUR TOP 10 FAVORITE APPS

10. Word with Friends FreeDescription: Similar to the classic board game Scrabble, this multiplayer word game allows players to take turns building words crossword puzzle style with an opponent. Up to 20 games can be played simultaneously using push notifi cations to alert players when it is their turn.

Why We Love It: Aside from the fact that Words with Friends is an easy game to understand and play, it also made our list for the way it’s revolutionized multiplayer gaming on a mobile platform by not requiring two players to be “logged on” at the same time to play. It’s this con-cept that allows players to be engaged with one another over a longer timespan while playing at their own conve-nience and leisure.

Available on Android and iOS.

9. InstagramDescription: This app allows you to share photos in a sim-ple photo stream for friends to see. You can pick from one of several fi ltered effects or tilt-shirt blur to breathe new life into your mobile photos.

Why We Love It: With mobile devices now sporting some pretty high-tech cameras, we’re more inclined to snap a picture at any given moment. With an app like Instagram, sharing photos we take throughout the day can be done with much more expression and depth. You don’t need to be a Photoshop expert to create and share some really dynamic images. It not only allows you to express yourself, but looking through the thousands of photos submitted by other users and friends may trigger some visual creativity all in its own.

Available on Android and iOS.

8. ESPN ScoreCenterDescription: Never miss a game again! ESPN ScoreCenter brings your scores, news, and standings from hundreds of sports leagues around the world right into the palm of your hand.

Why We Love It: This is a great app for every sports en-thusiast. There are always those few games throughout the season that we just aren’t able to tune-in for, but now with the ScoreCenter app, users can set notifi cations to instantly alert your mobile device after every play, quarter, or game. Score!

Available on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.

7. ABC PlayerDescription: The Offi cial ABC Player App allows you to watch your favorite ABC shows for free. In addition, the app also provides the ABC television schedule and closed captioning on select shows.

Why We Love It: While other television network apps are littered with ads, cluttered with an excessive number of fea-tures, and instable from bugs, ABC’s iPad app design out-shines the competition by far. We love how the ABC Player interface is clean with your favorite ABC TV shows just a quick tap away. The list of episodes and shows are repre-sented by captivating screen shots, which really “pop” over the app’s dark background.

• TV shows we enjoy on ABC Player: Modern Family, Re-venge, Castle

Available on iOS.

6. YelpDescription: Yelp is a search engine specialized to fi nd near-by places to eat, shop, drink, relax and play. The mobile app also recognizes your location and offers user reviews and ratings.

Why We Love It: Yelp is like that cool friend that you want to take everywhere because they always know what’s good to eat. Other than being extremely helpful when you’re explor-ing a new city, it’s also a great platform to express your inner food critic.

• Delicious restaurants we’ve discovered through Yelp: Dos Caminos, Ippudo, Parc Brasserie, Yolk

Available on Android and iOS.

5. Target for iPadDescription: The Target app allows shoppers to do more than just browse and purchase items on their iPad. Users can create and organize shopping lists, check prices and avail-ability, check out the weekly ad, and more.

Why We Love It: Other retail store apps optimize the data-base of their offi cial website into a “mobile friendly” expe-rience, while Target’s iPad app has embraced the gorgeous 10-inch screen in such a beautiful way. Upon opening the app, you’ll fi nd a map, weekly ad, shopping lists, and even a bobble head of the Target Dog mascot sitting on a virtual table countertop. What does this do? It welcomes us into a much more colorful and visually pleasing shopping experi-ence. Not to mention, the app also pinpoints the exact loca-tion of the items inside of the store.

Available on iOS. Other Variations available on Android.

4. ShazamDescription: Shazam is a lightning fast tagging app that can recognize tunes in less than a minute, which allows users to discover new music and TV shows on the go. Why We Love It: Don’t you hate when you’re out shopping and you can’t identify the song playing on the radio? Thankfully, with a touch of a button, Shazam lets us know what’s playing! There’s also the option to purchase the song or share your fi ndings to all your friends.

• Latest song discovered through Shazam: Blue Monday – New Order

Available on Android, Blackberry, iOS, Nokia, and Windows Phone.

3. NewsstandDescription: Built into any device with iOS 5, the Newsstand app offers a convenient place to shelve all the print publica-tion you love to read-- such as newspapers, magazines, and journals-- in a digital interactive form.

Why We Love It: Imagine picking up an issue of GQ maga-zine with a photo of Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose on the front cover. Tap on the headline and you’re automatically taken to the featured article. In addition, you’re even treated to an exclusive interview video alongside the article. Nylon and GQ are prime magazine examples, offering a unique inter-active user interface, while featuring high-resolution photos and behind the scenes videos that your regular paper mag-azine is incapable of delivering.

• What we enjoy in Newsstand: Nylon Magazine iPad Edi-tion, GQ.

Available as a part of iOS 5.

2. PandoraDescription: Pandora is a personalized Internet radio ser-vice that plays music based on your favorite song, artist, or composer. You can enjoy your music right from your mobile phone, tablet, or e-reader.

Why We Love It: What’s not to love? Free music (with limited ads) is always a win in our book. When logged into their ac-count, users can create stations that are synced across mul-tiple mobile devices and tablets – that means you can listen to your favorite music almost anywhere.

• Recommended Stations: Arcade Fire, Gotye, Kimbra, The Rolling Stones, Mumford & Sons

Available on Android, Blackberry, iOS, Palm Pre, Nook, Kin-dle Fire.

1. FlipboardDescription: Flipboard is a social magazine personalized to let you fl ip through your Facebook newsfeed, tweets from Twitter, photos from Instagram, and videos from YouTube – all in one place!

Why We Love It: Flipboard fi lters out all the nonsense and allows us to organize articles based on our interests. The beautifully designed interface and relevant feeds can keep you engaged for hours. Download Flipboard and say good-bye to your Sunday afternoon – in a good way!
