Foundation: The Engine for doing Good
In our regular meeting on November 17, 2017 we had
ARRFC PDG Rtn. Madhukar Malhotra to share his valuable
experiences on the Rotary Foundation. He was warmly
welcomed by President Rtn. Dr. Rita Kalra. She also
acknowledged the gracious presence of R’ann Neeru
Malhotra and the visiting Rotarians from Rotary Club
Nahan Sirmour Hills; Coordinator RI Convention Promotion
PP Rtn. Dr. S.K. Sablok and PP Rtn. Sushil K. Attri.
PDG Madhukar Malhotra
PP Rtn. T.S. Anand was
pleased to introduce a very
close friend PDG Madhukar
Madhukar as “a role model
for all of us”. Bachelor in
Engineering from Regional
Engineering College in J&K,
he did Masters in Engineering
from Miami University and
MBA from Marquette
University. After working with
corporate entities for over 20 years Madhukar Malhotra, a
strong business development professional, started his own
very successful international trading activity in 1989, and
has now retired from business. He joined Rotary Club
Chandigarh in 1978-79 and became the Club President in
1989-90, and also served District 3080 as Assistant
Governor in 2000-01, District Secretary in 2003-2004 and
District Governor in 2010-11. He also served as DRFC
Chair during 2013-16. He is a multiple PHF and a member
of Paul Harris Society.
PDG Madhukar Malhotra acknowledged TRF knowledge
available in our Club through DRFC Chair PDG Shaju Peter
and our senior most Past President Rtn. B.L. Ramsisaria. He
commented, “The way your dynamic President Rita is
going, I am sure you would beat all records.”
He gave brief history about the Rotary Foundation which is
a non-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary
International to achieve world understanding and peace
through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural
exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary
contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation
who share its vision of a better world.
The Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary
International's sixth President, Arch C. Klumph, as an
endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has
grown from an initial contribution of US$ 26.50 to more
than US$ three billion worth of projects taken up all over
the world, and is one of the largest and most prestigious
international fellowship programs in the world.
PDG Madhukar said, “The philosophy of Arch Klumph was
that we should not live for ourselves alone but also for the joy
of others.” He added, “The Foundation makes life better all over
the world including our own communities, like the Solar
electrification project in Leh that your Club has taken up.”
He also discussed the failure on part of the government in spite
of having funds, and how Rotary steps in like in case of polio
eradication in India. The Rotary advocacy and spending
millions of dollars for this cause made the government and other
agencies to come forward to make India polio free since January
2011. Hopefully, next year we may become a polio free world.
PDG Madhukar said, “Rotary is going strong. It is changing.”
The younger generation does not have time for Rotary which
has to evolve and we have to find ways and means to attract
younger people.
The Rotary Foundation is the charity arm of Rotary and it
should be our favorite charity. We should contribute to the
foundation as it is the engine for doing good in the world and in
our own communities.
After thanking PDG Madhukar Malhotra on behalf of our Club,
for his impressive words of wisdom on TRF, PP Harish Sethi
presents a memento to him. Looking on are President Dr. Rita
Kalra and Secretary Jeeten Bhambri
The Rotary Magic While recording the proceedings of the meetings on his mobile, the Editor takes the photographs from one place with his camera having zoom facilities, so that view of the audience is not blocked, making limited movement during the meetings. Please look at the results of our eight years continuously District award winning bulletin, and not that how it is done. That is the Rotary Magic…!!!
