Preview Foundation Stone #10: Resurrected Spirit

1. Every person is born a sinner, the child of sinful parents.

2. Besides being born sinners, every person sins in life.

3. Moses gave the Law to guide us, but it makes us sin more.

4. Because all sin, we don’t think we’ll be judged. We will.

5. The only way to deal with sinful flesh is to crucify it.

6. After our sinful body is crucified, it is resurrected to new life.

7. We put faith in Jesus to give us new life, often in baptism.

8. Born again: die to self, get buried in baptism, rise to new life.

9. Once corn again, you’ll be a new creation, a citizen of heaven.

10. Sadly, our crucified flesh tries to come back to tempt us to sin.

11. We need the Holy Spirit active in our lives to empower us.

12. With the Spirit’s help, we can live a righteous life.

Q1:

Am I dead or alive?

Q1: Am I dead or alive?

A1: We are all born dead -spiritually dead, because we all come from Adam, the original sinner.

R1: Genesis 2:16,17; 3:6,7,17-19,21

Genesis 2:16,17 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

Genesis 3:6,7 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;

Genesis 3:17-19,21 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

Q2:

Adam and Eve, my ancestors, were stupid sinners, yes, but I'm a good person. How can I be dead?

Q2: Adam and Eve, my ancestors, were

stupid sinners, yes, but I'm a good person. How can I be dead?

A2: We are all spiritually dead because we all sin. Our flesh can't stop sinning until it is dead.

R2: Romans 2:29-32; 5:12-14, 6:23

Romans 2:29-32 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Romans 5:12-14 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned - for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Q3:

Can we become spiritually alive by obeying the laws of God?

Q3: Can we become spiritually alive by

obeying the laws of God?

A3: Moses brought the Law of God to give people hope, but when our flesh hears the Law, it only becomes more sinful. We need to die to the Law.

R3: Romans 7:1-6

Romans 7:1-6 Do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who know the law—that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

Q4:

It's Adam's fault and it's the Law's fault that I am a sinner. It's not my fault! So there's nothing to worry about, right?

Q4: It's Adam's fault and it's the Law's fault that I am a sinner. It's not my fault! So there's nothing to worry about, right?

A4: Actually, yes, you should worry. If you execute the sinner in you, God's will be happy with you. If you don't, God's wrath is waiting for you.

R4: Ephesians 2:1-6

Ephesians 2:1-6 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions— it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

Q5:

What are we supposed to do, then, with this dead body, this sinful nature that we're living in?

Q5: What are we supposed to do, then,

with this dead body, this sinful nature that we're living in?

A5: Crucify it! Crucify it! Then bury it.

R5: Galatians 5:24,25; Colossians 3:5-7 and

Romans 6:3,4

Galatians 5:24,25 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Colossians 3:5-7 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

Colossians 2:12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

Romans 6:3,4 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Q6:

What happens after we execute our sinful nature?

Q6: What happens after we execute our sinful nature?

A6: It has to be resurrected. Just like Jesus died for our sins, we have to die to our sinful nature. And just like Jesus rose back to life, we will also rise to receive new life.

R6: Romans 6:5-12

Romans 6:5-12 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin - because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.

Q7:

Who can make us alive again?

Q7: Who can make us alive again?

A7: If you have faith in the power of God, then God will make you alive with Christ.

R7: Colossians 2:11-13

Colossians 2:11-13 In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins.

Q8:

What is this death to our sinful nature, burial in water baptism, and rising to new life called?

Q8: What is this death to our sinful

nature, burial in water baptism, and rising to new life called?

A8: It's called being born again. When we do this, we get a new life. We get a new birthday!

R8: John 3:3-7

John 3:3-7 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'

Q9:

Since your sin nature, the flesh that Adam gave you, is killed, do you still have to live like a normal person?

Q9: Since your sin nature, the flesh that Adam gave you, is killed, do you still have to live like a normal person?

A9: No! Your flesh nature is dead and buried. You are no longer a person of this world, of this country, of this people. You are now a citizen of heaven, a child of God. You are free! But, don't act like your dead self!

R9: Colossians 2:20,21 and 3:1-9

Colossians 2:20-21 Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?

Colossians 3:1-10 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Q10:

The sin nature has been killed and buried, but does that mean it that it has disappeared and will never bother you again?

Q10: The sin nature has been killed and buried, but does that mean it that it has disappeared and will never bother you again?

A10: Unfortunately, our sin nature does not die easily. It doesn't want to die. It wants to keep on controlling us. That's why God gives us His Holy Spirit-to give us more power to overcome sin.

R10: Romans 8:6-11

Romans 8:6-11 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Q11:

Being born again is a one time event, but day after day, how do we keep on living as the children of God should live?

Q11: Being born again is a one time event, but day after day, how do we keep on living as the children of God should live?

A11: We live day by day by the leading of the Holy Spirit, which means every day we need to pray, listen to the Spirit speak to our hearts, and follow His direction.

R11: Romans 8:13,14

Romans 8:13,14 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Q12:

What is our goal, our purpose in life as the children of God?

Q12: What is our goal, our purpose in life as the children of God?

A12: Our goal is simply to live a righteous life, which means to always do what is right. Jesus Christ made that possible for us.

R12: Romans 5:17-19

Romans 5:17-19 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
